Spring has arrived, but Daventry is still covered in snow, and the chilly winds and snowfall will not stop. Something is terribly wrong and King Graham and Queen Valanice are soon invited to the court of King Quilli'ehennan, lord of the mysterious and powerful fairies in the nearby Old Wood, where they learn the reason for the viscious weather: Queen Ahi'aorina, the bringer of springtime, has been kidnapped by a group of imps. While Valanice returns to the castle, Graham sets out to pursue the kidnappers and save the fairy queen from their clutches, knowing that if he fails, everyone in Daventry and the Old Wood will soon perish in the cold. He soon teams up with the traveling minstrel Shallan, and together they face the many dangers on the road ahead. Eventually they are separated from each other and Graham has to continue on his own. He climbs the lifeless Glass Mountains and arrives at the place where the fairy queen has been taken, the mysterious Sorrowing Court where the giant Dunstan rules. Or does he? Graham soon realizes that Kuzgu, the imp in charge of the kidnapping, is on an agenda of his own...
