Phoenix Online Studios Announcement

February 28, 2006

Continuing its trajectory on the unbelievable attention the project has snagged from the press in late 2005, such as important appearances in MTV News interview with Stephen Totilo, Gamespy interview with Allen "Delsyn" Rausch, IGN article by David Adams and 1UP article by Patrick Klepek, among others, The Silver Lining now appears exclusively in March Issue of Computer Gaming World and February Issue of Edge Magazine, two of the most recognizable magazines in the industry.

In Computer Gaming World, Darren Gladstone sits with Saydmell Salazar, PR Director, and César Bittar, Project Director, to discuss various facets of the game. Gladstone also interviews Marcus Beer, PR Director for Vivendi Universal Games and even Ken Williams, co-founder of the King's Quest series, creating quite an interesting gathering of opinions about the game and its expectations. Aside from the interview, there's also the eye-candy trailer of the game and a never-before-seen "Making Of" video on the DVD that comes with the magazine. Displaying almost 9 minutes of exclusive interviews with several of the team members and unreleased material, the "Making Of" is an extended version from the one used in the demo Phoenix Online Studios gave to Vivendi Universal Games.

In Edge Magazine you can find a two page interview with the directors of the project that explores the status of the team, the negotiations with Vivendi and the future of Phoenix Online Studios. Once again, Bittar and Salazar give insight to the development and design of the project, discuss the support from the Williams' and hint at future projects of the company.

The team is excited about these accomplishments that show, once again, that the future of Phoenix Online Studios is a promising one, especially with Shadows' release around the corner. The team would like to thank the media for their support, and express their gratitude to Marcus Beer, from Vivendi Universal Games, for his great display of professionalism and his participation in the interviews with MTV News, Gamespy and Computer Gaming World; finally, the team would also like to thank Ken Williams for his supportive, yet challenging, words in the CGW article.

Make sure to grab a copy of each magazine today!

November 29, 2005

On November 29th, 2005, Vivendi Universal Games (hereafter VUG) granted a fan license to Phoenix Online Studios to continue work on the KQIX project. As part of the negotiations between the two companies, VUG required a change of name of the project.

As a result, "King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining" will now adopt a new name: "The Silver Lining". We chose such a name because in many ways it represents the spirit that has always represented our project.

This is the press release from VUG:

"After extensive evaluation, Vivendi Universal Games is pleased to announce that the fan developed trilogy project 'The Silver Lining' (previously known as King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining), based on characters from Sierra Entertainment's 'Kings Quest' series, has been given approval to continue development. We look forward to seeing the first of its three upcoming chapters, 'Shadows', completed soon."

- VIVENDI UNIVERSAL GAMES

However, because of the nature of the negotiations with VUG, and the fact that we had to stop development during the past three months, we are forced to push the release of the first part "Shadows" further down the line. We are still unsure of our new release date, but we can say that it will happen somewhere during 2006.

Our website will also undergo changes in the near future due to legal claims we must comply with. We are preparing a couple of surprises for next year, so keep visiting and checking the Forum for further news.

On behalf of The Silver Lining Development Team, we would like to thank the thousands of fans that made this possible by emailing VUG and spreading the news; we would also like to give a special thanks to Matt Compton and Cat Tyson, organizers of SaveKQIX.org for such unconditional and wonderful support, as well as everyone who helped them in this kind effort. Also, special thanks to Rod Rigole 'Vice-President of Legal Affairs' and Marcus Beer 'Senior Public Relations Manager', both from VUG, for their great help during the negotiation. Without any of the aforementioned, none of this would have happened.

The cloak has dropped and the silver lining appeared. You, the fans, made it happen.

Thank you,

Directive Staff

KQ9.org Birthday Cake

KQ9.org's 3rd Birthday

In honour of KQ9.org's 3rd Birthday, we held a live chat in the TSL Chamber. During this chat, TSL directors and staff answered questions from the press and our fans!

First, we launched the new teaser on the intro page which officially announces our release date and the game as a trilogy. The first hour of the chat was reserved specifically for questions from invited press members including: The Inventory, Fanventures, Quandary and Adventure Gamers. As an added bonus, Ken & Roberta Williams (the official creators of the King's Quest series) attended as well!

In the second hour, we answered some really excellent questions from the fan community. The questions were so good, that we continued the chat for an extra hour!

Overall the event was a great success and lot of fun and I'd like to thank everyone that attended. We've never had such a huge amount of people for any previous chat session and your support was greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Neil Rodrigues

Birthday Gifts

Birthday Gifts

Since it's KQ9.org's birthday, we decided to pass out a few gifts! There are plenty of things to see in the Media section of the site.

During KQ9.org's 3rd Birthday Chat we released many good things for everyone to see, hear and have. We've added eleven brand new Screenshots to the site which showcase characters and backgrounds from various scenes in the game. You'll immediately notice the huge amount of quality and detail the team uses during the creation of The Silver Lining.

Also, we've added six beautiful new themes to the Music section. Some of these themes will be refreshingly new to you and others you may recognize from the current intro teaser, the countdown Flash we had before this teaser, and from the Sound Clips we released earlier this year.

There is also now a new Wallpaper you may download for your desktop which appears in the intro teaser. Now you can finally connect the pieces we displayed during the countdown. We've also now created an official KQIX Skin for Windows Media Player 10. You can now listen to your music and watch videos all within a sleek KQIX interface.

We know you've all been waiting to hear more about game progress for ages, so we've now posted an entry in the Journal that directly addresses this and more. It has specific and concrete details on team progress, and mentions what still needs to be completed for the game.

I hope everyone enjoyed these gifts as much as we enjoyed making them. You are the ones that inspire and motivate us, so you definitely deserve it! You'll be seeing more and more good stuff as we get closer to The Silver Lining's release!

Sincerely,

Neil Rodrigues

FOU!

KQIX Chamber

KQIX Chamber

Finally the highly anticipated KQIX Chamber is revealed. To use it is simple, most of our fans know how already and it requires no expertise or technical skills. So, what is it?

Chamber is King's Quest IX's official chatroom! Based on the concept of having the java-based irc chat we had back on May 18th, 2003, celebrating kq9.org's birthday, the very first KQIX Chamber chat will be this May 15th, 2004. It will be in honour of (what else?) kq9.org's 2nd birthday!

For those that were not a part of our fan community last year, feel free to read the chat log of the event. As you can see, it was a lot of fun and very informative. The fans had the opportunity to directly ask questions to the Directors on the King's Quest IX Development Team. This year, we've had extraordinary progress within the KQ9 team and the Directors would love to share it with you. They may even reveal some spoilers, so this is one chat you definitely will not want to miss.

Chamber will also be having regular weekly chats, where fans can come in and chat amongst themselves and with other KQ9 team members that happen to be there as well. Of course, we wish you the best of luck trying to fish answers out of the team members. But, you never know when you'll get lucky!

"The revival of adventure gaming" thats the title of April's Issue Classic GI. Joe Juba interviewed us last January. It was a great experience to have this conversation with him regarding what is going on with KQ9 to the adventure gaming world.

We feel praised to be called "the force behind the most promising fan-made continuation of the King's Quest series to date". To our pleasant surprise we had full 2 page coverage in their April issue of present year, along with other interesting adventure topics, developers and games.

During our almost 2 hour chat with Joe, we talked about the work process in KQ9: how we operate as a real company (just non-paid), how you can actually can get hired to fired, schedules, organization, HR, PR and other related. We discussed the progress so far regarding the game, and also a near insight of the future yet to come as he very well said "keep an eye on the website for updates and information". You never know when we may pop-out the promos!

Game Informer is a very well known magazine all over the US. It has a printed version and an online version. You should consider getting April's issue and read the whole edition! KQ9 Contests

KQ9 Contests

Last month, kq9.org had its first official contests for our fans. The Phrase contest required skills in creativity and thought, while the Flash Games contest involved quick thinking and hand-eye coordination!

The Phrase contest got our fans' creative juices flowing by trying to pick a phrase that would appear somewhere in the game. For obvious reasons, details about what kind of phrases we were looking for were kept secret. We received over 160 entries and are now in the process of picking our winner! There were many excellent entries, ranging from extremely hilarious, to extremely clever and to just extremely odd! We want to thank all of you that worked hard and participated in this mysterious and secretive contest.

We also had the Flash Games contest where the highest scoring player got honourable mention in the Hall of Fame. But more importantly, they received an unreleased KQ9 screenshot, news about our appearance in Game Informer, and even received a small spoiler about the KQ9 plot! We literally weren't expecting such magnificant high scores from our fans! This month we will be continuing the contest with even better prizes. We've fixed KQPong's "point bug" and some things Holeman, to make the games a bit more challenging.

The two new Games are ones you may or may not have seen before. Sneaky Genie is based on the "Snake" game that you must have played on someone's cell phone before. The concept is simple, our KQ6 genie Shamir loves mints, so have him eat as many as possible without running into the walls or himself! Our second game, Hexxawand is based on the game "Hexxagon" only this time it's a battle of wits or wands rather, between Rosella and Graham. Zap Rosella before she zaps you -- show this "princess" who's her "daddy".

This month we're also opening a new contest: the Bear contest. There will be 5 bears in KQ9 and they need names! Based on the pictures, choose a unique and creative name for each one. The winner not only decides the names of these 5 bears, but also receives a special surprise! And don't even try asking what the surprise is... ;)

Neil Rodrigues

Monthly Update

Monthly Update

KQIX has received nothing but good news and congratulations over new site and new look. In return, we give you high-quality material, more updates, more features, and deep thanks for the true support.

These have been an excellent 2 weeks. The launch of the site has had an overwhelming positive feedback that has inspired old fans and new ones, team members and directors. We at PR and Web know the meaning of fans and feedback in this whole process. You are why we work so hard and just for that we give you more and more. We lack the words to give in return all we've received these weeks.

This month's big updates include the online auditions. Finally the info was collected and given to us to have this online for you to audition to be one of the voice overs from the game. Also we have the flash games with prizes. We also have the surprise contest! Get high on creativity, shock us with an amazing sentence around 25 to 30 characters, to be showed in our game. Click on Contest to see details. The winner gets to be on the credits of the game! There are new wallpapers! Old and new, you can get them all for free.

We will hold weekly updates and monthly updates. For those of you that have been following the progress of the kq9.org site, you should know we've kept weekly updates since way back before November last year. We will have continuous monthly updates until the whole site (with the new features) will be fully completed. As well, we will maintain our regular weekly updates. Once the whole site is up, we already have scheduled events, upgrades and cool things for our fans to continue to enjoy the KQIX community, we just keep on growing!

Currently due to external reasons we decided to move the monthly update for middle march sooner! So, from now on all big updates should come approximately around a month. Each newsletter will be released monthly as well as the regular updates of journal and more. Forum and other events are scheduled for you too. The art of the week will keep bringing you our best stuff. We will release more features as the months go on, and all we can certainly say is that you won't need to go anywhere else because you will have it all in one place, here at kq9.org.

Game Fever

Game Fever

Flash Games ! More and more updates! We bring you nothing but cool stuff in March! This month we have the Games feature. We launched two of the flash games produced by KQIX's web team: Holeman and KQPong!

We produced a series of flash games, bringing the old 80's arcade feeling to the KQ's fans. Holeman is the core idea of our little fellow, aka Hole-in-the-Wall, trying to escape from Mordack, Alzhared, Lolotte and Malicia! When he gets a sacred treasure he gets a bonus which turns them into black cats which are vulnerable and ready to be devoured. The more you play it, the more addictive it gets; of course, inspired from the old version of the arcade game Pacman. Then our second surprise of the month is KQPong. Yes everyone! For both Connor-haters and non-Connor-haters alike, you can now have fun bouncing Connor's head around on a very fancy Pong board, which leads you on a flashback from KQ1 to KQ9. All these games are completely free here at kq9.org, for all of you to play and show off your high scores with the rest of the fans.

But that's not even nearly the coolest thing about them. The more you play it the better you get, and for those who will spend hours playing them I must inform that at the end of the month we will check out the high scores, and I promise you, the winner gets a never-before-seen kq9 art as a reward! What can it be? 3D art? Colored art? Screenshot? All you need to know is that we want to see those high scores very high! The higher they get, the happier we will be, and the happier we get, the better prizes we will give.

More good news everyone, hope you like these. The web team worked hard to bring them for you. We have more to come! So if you liked these, you will love what's yet to come! What are you waiting for? Go play!

Sincerely,

You may believe you know what we are all about, but do you really? The development of the project has been kept secret in order to add a surprise effect to all of our fans, but now KQIX has became a strong solid creative group eager to provide you not just a game, but also a community for you to relate to.

We on KQIX know how important fans are, because we are fans ourselves, and we know the key role that you play. You give and you get, for that we're expanding our horizons on kq9.org in order to establish a place for you to hang and be entertained while we finish to produce the 9th piece of KQ: "Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining" .

That's why these 3 updates are part of a series of things we've had covered just for your enjoyment. We will keep the rest in secret till we have the chance to put it all online.
