“Videte ne quis sciat.”

After receiving a cryptic letter from an old friend, Jeremiah Devitt knows he must investigate the situation immediately. Arriving by train, he is taken aback at the sheer size of his friend’s house and of the land upon which it sits. Unsure what to expect he cautiously approaches the house.

The front door has been left open, suggesting that perhaps someone is home. Upon entering and taking a look around the main floor, Devitt begins to suspect otherwise. The fireplace is cold, the parlor windows have been left open, and days-old food has been left on the kitchen table.

Letters scattered about the house speak of frightened servants fleeing the house, afraid of the recent changes to the master’s behavior. Not even the local doctor dares to come back again after his last visit. The only signs of life seem to be the crows outside, and the frightening sound that resembles a cat howling from some unknown location.

What happened here? Where is his friend? Why are there paintings missing from hallways, and doors boarded up to prevent entry? Why has everyone run away from this place and its owner? This visit seems to be doing nothing to ease Jeremiah Devitt’s mind. With grim determination, he presses onward through the dark, cold hallways of the house in search of answers.
