So let's say you know ahead of time, somehow, that you're going to have an Adventure. How would you prepare? What would you pack? What essential items do you need to have on your person before departing?
A pocket knife, a rope and for extra zaniness a couple paper clips! ;D
cellphone, rope, Swiss army knife, flashlight
Depending on how much time I had or how much I knew I could carry with me, a change of clothes... oh, and wallet if I thought money would be useful wherever the hypothetical adventure is taking place.
Moldy cheese, obviously. :P
Money, not even that much, but it is better than going in broke. Not every pawn shop is going to let you trade in knick knacks.
^ Really? :o I've never been in a pawn shop, so I didn't know that.
I believe pawn shops usually give money for things and things for money, so you can sort of trade stuff, but not in a 1-to-1 sort of way that Alex did. XD
And I'd definitely bring rope and a knife of some sort. Probably some sort of food as well, in case I end up starving in the mountains or needing to pie a Yeti.

You forgot a thingy that plugs into electrical outlets that, when charged, turn people into babies.
Never know when you might need a thingy that plugs into electrical outlets that, when charged, turn people into babies.
Mmm, sandwich potions.
That's a rather exhaustive list!
haha, and yes, I never leave home without one of those, Bludshot. ;)
What's a sandwich potion? (What's A Paladin?)

Clearly, the alternate solution to dealing with Malicia is to use the Gopher Repellant. :P

A sandwich potion is a potion that produces a cheese sandwich when used. (The Paladin is your Pal.)
Grog. Lots of it.
I've never played an adventure game where I didn't, at one point or another, think "Gosh, if only I had a shovel" or "Gosh, if only I had magic rope"
So those are my two MUST HAVES.

Grog. Lots of it.
And by extension, mugs. Lots of them.
Knife, rope, backpack, first aid kit, slingshot, hand mirror, and a bucket.
A backpack and a hintbook. ;)

Something capable of keeping Slenderman restrained and unconscious. :P
Well, I think a magic bag that can hold a lot of stuff is definitely needed. :)
After reading another thread, I have to conclude that a kayak is an absolute necessity, especially in an adventure game area.
XD
ROFL! Okay, THAT wins quote of the day, Deloria!
Knife, needle and thread, and hammer.
Don't ask why, those were the first items to come to mind. Oh, and my iPod. Gotta jam to Backstreet Boys while adventuring!
A crossbow, in case anyone tried to steal my kayak. :P
I've got the feeling that this going to turn into as much as a forum meme as calling Sir Cray "the mutton" is.

I still don't get that... but then I don't have a kayak either... if I got a kayak, would I get calling Cray "the mutton"?
The mutton is displeased that Delling doesn't get it yet.
(PS I would bring mutton too.)

It happened once a few weeks ago in the Asylum. I wouldn't really call it a meme though.
Okay, a forum in-joke then.
I would bring a 75lb bag of cocaine.
You could use it to stay up for days to solve a puzzle.
You could trade it for other items.
You could use it to kill enemies.
It's really an all purpose kind of substance.
Bt
Might work... provided the adventure game in question isn't Police Quest. :P
You know, if you'd written that a few months ago, I wouldn't have known what you were talking aboiut. Now, thanks to the awesome Dilandau 3000, I do. :)

Hahah! Yeah... might not work so well in that one!

Let me see if I remember exactly what tends to get the most use in a point and click adventure game.
Actually wait I know already
A Backpack... For all those items I'll need to pick up.

Drugs will pretty much get you killed in just about any point and click made by Sierra.

Phui! Real men and women stuff things down their pockets.
Hmmm...Things to take on an adventure game... Well, honestly, a rubber-band would probably be helpful. those have a lot of uses. I'm using one right now to hold my pricing gun from work together... And maybe a box cutter or something to defend myself with and to break down boxes, in the even I encounter any. And for any items I encounter along the way, my hyperspace arsenal works fine to store them. EVERYONE needs a hyperspace arsenal! If you haven't gotten one yet, do so now. I think they're on sale...

Even better: Duct tape!
Yes, Duct Tape is a must! One of the most essential parts of an adventure. So Duct tape, rubberbands and a hyperspace arsenal... What else would I be able to bring with me?
Well the thing is that I can think of quite a few items that will always be needed in a point and click
Such as a rope and a stick.
A walkthrough! :P

A walkthrough! :P
Well thats a time paradox in it of itself
However as Point and clicks have taught me... Walkthroughs and manuals inside the game are really not that helpful
Because you see Darthkiwi the second you are in the "Book reduction effect" comes into being. Then that entire walkthrough is all of a sudden consisting of a single page and that page a single sentence.
Also, I thought the hyperspace arsenal came standard when you started the adventure. :P

I've seen some point and clicks where you actually have to obtain your hyperspace Arsenal.
Such as Discworld (You had a very limited inventory otherwise).
Discworld! :D I love that game. ;D

This sounds interesting but I don't follow. Could you explain how this happens?
I mean, why can't you have a game where you have an inventory item which is called "Walkthrough", which is basically just a pdf walkthrough of the game that you can view in-game?
And it's true that this would be chronologically impossible, but then games themselves are sort of time paradoxes in that they've been designed and constructed entirely outside of their own fictional time - the game designer has planned and played through each section several times over before the game is finished. It would be weird but other forms have done a similar thing - in Red Dwarf the characters find they're fictional characters and discover their writer and his typewriter. There's a section where they write their own script, which has immediate implications for the world around them. Absurd, but there's no reason it can't be done.
A hat. For me, probably either an Adventurer's Cap or the black straw trilby I got from New York.

In Space Quest IV, you have to buy a SQIV hint book. :P

I'm pretty sure Space Quest 4 did that... well, not that exactly... but you did purchase a walkthrough and use it to solve various puzzles.
Because Sierra wanted to do a symbol puzzle, but couldn't figure out how to implement it into a cogent narrative. :P
