*mouth drops* Could it be? Will it play on XP??

DMD, next time, add the "[ url][/ url]" instead of just the long web addy. :)

I already preordered it ;D...It might be better to preorder it cuz when it comes to stores it will probly be $49.99 instead of 19.99...I know, my mouth dropped too when I saw it...Right after I ordered it I began to listen to my (downloaded from Quest Studios) KQVI soundtrack...listening to when Alex sends his letter...I know, I'm a geek :P

I have a feeling it's just the KQ Collection mislabelled, but we'll see.  8)

And who knows what this could lead to? If this sells really well...maybe Vivendi will try this kind of thing with other series.

Yonkey,

here's the link for the KQ Collection from 1997

(sry, I dont know how to post the url)

Was it new, or do you mean like years ago? Do you think this could be true?
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: racx_00 on August 21, 2005, 11:11:32 AM
I saw it a year ago, looked like old stock. I reckon it was either a little older than the 1997 collection or a little newer :-\

I don't really think Vivendi would release a new collection though, isn't popular enough in their eyes. For the mean time I'm with Neil XD

Maybe you mean this one (http://www.softwaredigger.com/s/Sierra/King_s_Quest_Collector_s_Edition_Jewel_Case_PC__B0007CI706.htm)?
It's supposed to be the jewel case of the 1-6 collection... funny, since KQ7 Rosella is in there, and the whole thing looks KQ7-esque :S

It does seem unlikely, but who knows - maybe Vivendi finally wised up and decided to make some money off the fan-induced 'revival' of King's Quest? ;)
Of course, I would have been better convinced had they announced this upcoming release on their site :-\

I'd be more convinced as well. But look there's a Police Quest Compilation (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000AYFPKQ/qid=1124655881/sr=8-11/ref=sr_8__i11_xgl63/002-0336092-3102430?v=glance&s=videogames&n=229534) and a Space Quest Compliation (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000AYH89M/qid=1124655881/sr=8-13/ref=sr_8__i13_xgl63/002-0336092-3102430?v=glance&s=videogames&n=229534) too.

Maybe it's supposed to be like a surprise release? Maybe they're not releasing any info because they could care less about this series, like this is a final goodbye and this will the END of their profit interests in the series...I mean, less than a month ago on Sierra.com and Vivendi they still had MOE listed as one of their titles...They no longer have it. Also, look at what Rosella found: Police Quest and Space Quest compilations (oddly, they're all supposed to be released on the same day and the information was first given to Amazon for all three compilations on the same day: August 16

Even if it is released I only want the Space Quest Compilation because I already have KQCollection. Anyway I probably won't be able to get it unless I import which is way too expensive :-\

Well, they included a sneek peak of KQ7, so they had already started it, and probably wanted to show off their Disney-ness

Yeah, but it's still strange to put that pic on the collection CD. Plus, I have that collection and it doesn't have that pic anywhere :S

That doesn't make any sense. Why invest in updating & re-distributing those old games if you don't bother letting people know about it? :S

Anyways, say this thing is for real. What does this renewed interest spells for KQIX and the rest of the fan projects out there? :-\

Probably nothing.  I mean, there's no information about it there, nor on their website.  It's kind of risky to have a picture-less and information-less product and expect it to sell hundreds of thousands of copies... ::)

well it has been nearly a week and i contacted Vivendi and Amazon....Amazon was tightlipped about it and told me they couldn't reveal any further info at this time and Vivendi I informed them at their piracy section and asked them if they could verify it's authenticity..I gave them links and it's nearly three days and they havent replied and the site's still up...that says to me that it's real
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: TheReturnofDMD on August 23, 2005, 07:14:43 PM
As you know, I  found on Amazon.com about a compilation of King's Quest being released supposedly in October 2005. Then Rosella found Space Quest and Police Quest compilations on Amazon as well. Being no information was given, I wrote to Vivendi's piracy unit regarding this matter and asked them if they could verify it for me. They replied today, and this is what they said:

"Thank you for writing.  Vivendi Universal Games will be releasing compilations of Kings Quest, Space Quest and Police Quest in October of 2005.  They are legitimate and official releases from VUG."

I do not lie!!!!! If I find a way, I will post the email for anyone who doesn't believe. They f**king coming out! Woohoo!!!!!!!

I think that the petition that someone put out has actually done the trick!!!! I  hope that there is an official sequel to KQ (I hope that KQIX doesn't get cancelled though if there is a sequel, because it would be horrible for you to throw away all of your hardwork on this WONDERFULLY done game!).

As far as I know Farquhar's KQ collection came with KQS 1-7. I don't know if other versions were released before KQ7 or after MOE.
Title: Re: Check this out!

There was a KQ collection before KQ7. I think it had a small mention of KQ7, but other then that, it was just 1-6.
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: Deloria on August 29, 2005, 08:56:00 AM
Yup, I got that one and bought MOE and KQ7 seperately. It did indeed have KQ 1-6 aswell as some little games such as King's Question's and Nick's Pick's, but it also had an interview with Roberta and Ken Williams in addition to the KQ7 trailer and the trailer for "The Schnibble" (or something like that, can't remember, been a long time).

Just another general observation which adds more weight to how likely it is that these games will actually be released...

If you check Vivendi's Amazon page they have a lot of sub $30 games coming out around the same time that these are released. The fact that they are even on Vivndi's page means that theres no way it can be a hoax by someone trying to flog their copies of one of the numerous KQ collections. So, heres keeping fingers crossed and my expectations raising just a little  :)

I found the King's Quest compilation on two different websites than Amazon!

Here's one link:

http://www.softpicks.com/Kings-Quest-Compilation_B000AYFPKG.html

The next one:

http://www.elipsiselectronics.com/B000AYFPKG/Kings_Quest_Compilation.html

This game must be official if it's at three websites.

Maybe KQIX will make the cut for the next compilation! ::) :P

Why the next compilation? the first part of KQ9 can make it into this one. Both of them are supposed to be released this winter... ;)

I wouldn't call October winter ;)

you know, that brings up a very valid question though, which I've been trying to get answered in my impatience--just what months do qualify as winter to the KQIX team, anyway?  I mean, are we even talking before 2006 or later than that . . . but I guess that's off topic.

I betcha the compilation is real, though.  If it wasn't, Vivendi would just denounce it.  No comment?  That's a confirmation right there, isn't it?  Plus the fact that it doesn't say 1 copy available new and used, which it would if it was coming from a supplier with whom Amazon is not familiar. . .

Frankly, there is no evidence at all to suggest that it is not true and much to suggest that it is.  I mean, I hate to speculate, but this doesn't even seem like speculation to me.  It is real, as of now.

What is possible is that Vivendi is not totally committed to it for some reason, but production would have to be in swing by now in order to ship for that date, and the costs for actually porting this game to new computers are not going to set the company back at all.  Manufacturing costs, however, are what might stop it.

To quote wikipedia:

QuoteAstronomically, it begins with the winter solstice (around December 21 in the Northern hemisphere and June 21 in the Southern hemisphere), and ends with the spring equinox (around March 21 in the Northern hemisphere and September 23 in the Southern hemisphere). In meteorology it is by convention counted instead as the whole months of June, July and August in the Southern hemisphere and December, January and February in the Northern hemisphere.

That gives you a few months to play with :)

I would consider the winter months as the ones when snow falls on the ground.  But then again, Cesar lives in Florida so... :suffer:

But I would. I consider winter to start with the first rain, which usually falls around that time (right after the holidays).

Anyways, you have to stretch reality a bit if you want to come up with a good conspiracy theory ::) Mine is - Pheonix Studios banded up with Sierra/Vivendi behind our collective back, and would release KQIX (which, in fact, had already been completed two years ago - this explains why Yonkey spends so much time on the forum) together with the KQ compilation :P

I suppose this is genuine stuff... Couldn't believe it when I first saw it!

When Sierra celebrated their 15th anniversary they released the first KQ collection. It had games 1-6 plus a few extras and several videos. It's a very nice collection! I think there were different boxes in Europe and America though, although the contents were the same. I have the blue (European) version with the cover picture from KQ6 on it.

Then there was another release in a bigger box that featured KQ7 as well. I don't have one of these.

Finally, there was the Roberta Williams Anthology, a limited release that is very expensive to get second-hand, if you can even find it. It had KQ1-7 on it as well.

I think I've seen a screenshot of a really early collection (or more like a bargain bundle) predating all of these as well. It had KQ1-4 on it or so...

But this new collection, if it truly is updated they surely put MoE on it as well. That's the game they'd be most likely to sell in itself anyway. What makes me wonder the most though is the claim that all games are XP compatible. KQ:s 1-4 would be no problem, not 7 or MoE either. These still run out of the box on a modern PC just fine. But KQ 5 and 6... They used the SCI1 interpreter, heavily dependant on the multimedia capabilities and CPU speeds of the PCs that people had back then. I can't believe they actually patched up those games. Maybe they found an old hw emulator to run it through... It boggles me. Will there be any tech support offered for these products? If so, they're asking for trouble if they simply copied those games onto a CD or DVD disc. ::)

Oh well, they're cheap, they're official and they are a great chance for everyone to complete their collection. I hope they sell well and re-awakens the adventure genre. Ok, I know they are going to be side items for them, but I hope there's a market for it so that they keep their back catalogue alive in the future as well!

Well, there ARE programmers at Vivendi, so they should know enough to know that KQ 5 and 6 won't work, and they'ed be able to figure out a way to make them compatible. The question is, will it run on Windows Vista?

I'm not sure is this is DOSBox, but doesn't XP come with a thing where you can change the setting (ie. win. 95, win. 98, win. 2000) for each game?  ??? Mine does.

No, DOSbox usually works better than the WindowsXP emulation(for the DOS versions of the games). They're not the same thing.

I can get them all to work without 3rd party software(minus voices in KQV, and a few other weird things), but that doesn't seem to be the usual case. :-\

It's possible to play all the KQ games on modern systems(using 3rd party software). If you try it though, you'll find that it sometimes takes a good deal of tweaking(not something the average PC user wants to go through). ;)

So yeah... if they were to release the KQ games in their current state, they are going to be getting a lot of calls for technical help(whether they support it or not). It would be a VERY bad idea to release DOS games into a mostly NT-based market. I'd like to think any game company would have the sense not to do it(wiithout an emulator of some sort).

As for the rank change, you'll no longer be a slave at 50 posts. :P

Which reminds me... Cat, with the new forum, I think that rank list of yours needs to be updated(50 rather than 51, and the zero thing goes for the rest also... I think). XD

I don't think Vivendi would go to all the work of remaking the games (especially since fan have remade or are remaking most of those games already) and then selling them for only $20.

It's true that VU doesn't really deserve to have the game be bought, but I will still buy at the very least the KQ compilations out of respect for the series. I once made a pledge to never buy a VU product ever again because of the shutdown of Sierra. And now that KQIX has been shut down, It give me all thwe more reason to stick to that pledge. But I will still buy this one collection just in case of any surprises it may contain... (Although I doubt it will contain any surprises, but I can still dream... :P) If VU did make an official KQ9, I might not get it if it is like the game that must not be named. But this compilation is one thing I will get out of respect for the series.

Guess what: The release dates of the Sierra collections at Amazon.com has been pushed forward to January 30, 2006! :o

That wouldn't be especially weird I guess, except for the fact that the previously annouced release date came and passed. Many people have already ordered these collections and were currently waiting for the 1-2 week shipping time to expire. I don't know if people have been charged money already or if they will receive their copies before 2006, but I certainly wouldn't bet on it. They've also removed all the product comments from the webpages, some of them (rather inappropriately imo) were just about the KQIX shutdown.

So now I guess everyone will start posting their conspiracy theories. ::) Were the collections being pulled back because of KQIX somehow? Did they receive so many orders that they'll need to make reprints and want to prepare an advertising campaign for the holidays? Or, shock and horror, did these collections never exist in the first place? Was it some sort of market research trick or whatever? A truly intriguing mystery...
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: Say on October 20, 2005, 10:43:33 AM
If they were just a "market research" then it's simply impossible they could have charged anyone a single penny for it, otherwise it wouldn't be called "market research" rather than "scam" then.

I believe something else happened, that's why they postponed it, maybe some problems with distribution or whatnot, I'm just guessing I believe.

I do know, as well that the Compilation reviews had some negative ones, not for the product itself but people voicing their opinions about KQIX being shut down, quite impressive to be honest. It's overwhealming the support of the fans.
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: Yonkey on October 20, 2005, 10:54:50 AM
I agree with Say.  Doing market research is one thing, but charging people for pre-ordering a product that gets delayed 4 months is another.  ::) To be honest, I'm pretty skeptical about the whole thing, since they greatly lack the marketing all Vivendi usually puts into their games.  Adding to that the fact that they're not even mentioned on Vivendi's site, creates even more suspicion.

Anyway, to get back on topic, I don't believe their decision on KQIX has anything to do with the Compilations, or their delay.

QuoteGuess what: The release dates of the Sierra collections at Amazon.com has been pushed forward to January 30, 2006! Shocked

Roll Eyes Were the collections being pulled back because of KQIX somehow? Did they receive so many orders that they'll need to make reprints and want to prepare an advertising campaign for the holidays? Or, shock and horror, did these collections never exist in the first place? Was it some sort of market research trick or whatever? A truly intriguing mystery...

:o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :

I ordered mine, and now I have to wait?! COME ON!! Oh well.

QuoteIf they were just a "market research" then it's simply impossible they could have charged anyone a single penny for it, otherwise it wouldn't be called "market research" rather than "scam" then.

I never looked at the reviews, but I wouldn't be surprised one bit.

QuoteI agree with Say.  Doing market research is one thing, but charging people for pre-ordering a product that gets delayed 4 months is another.  Roll Eyes To be honest, I'm pretty skeptical about the whole thing, since they greatly lack the marketing all Vivendi usually puts into their games.  Adding to that the fact that they're not even mentioned on Vivendi's site, creates even more suspicion.

Anyway, to get back on topic, I don't believe their decision on KQIX has anything to do with the Compilations, or their delay.

I agree with both you and Say!

BREAKING NEWS FROM AMAZON!!! I was just checking my account, and it said that my order for three of the Compilations was being processed. Does that mean that it's getting ready to ship out before January 30th, or something else entirely? This makes no sense whatsover. I think there's a HUGE conspricy going on! :P I will contact Amazon, and find out what on earth is going on... I'll post a reply if/when I get one.

QuoteThey rose the price back up to $19.99!

How dare they! They even DELAYED them until JANUARY 30TH! I can't believe any of this. But I was checking my account on Amazon, and it says my order is being processed... I don't exactly know what that means at this point because they've been delayed, but I am very, very confused...

Now it says on the PQ and SQ compliations that orders are not guarenteed. What on earth is going on? Oh, I got a response from Amazon, but did nothing to answer my question. I'm too lazy to post the reply they gave me, as it's on another computer right now, but I might post it on my site later if you check around there. The link is in my signiture

I simply make a search on amazon for "King quest" and the compilation is not yet release. There also other version of KQ from VU seems to be available. Strange!

Are they the Compilation or are they the old Games being released again to our Country.

Where did that image come from? If it's an old list of boxes, then of course Leisure Suit Larry would be incomplete. Magna cum Laude was released after those collections... Ort maybe I'm confusing one thing with another. Tell me if I'm confused or not...

Maybe VU delayed it so that The Silver Lining: Shadows could be included....remember, Say said that the release date is also up to VU now. Evidently, VU has some kind of interest in the release date of Shadows now.

I think you're thinking a little too much into it.  They probably sent the cease and desist order to test how serious the fans and people working on the project were about these kinds of games.  They probably delayed the release date AGAIN in anticipation of The Silver Lining coming out.  Every time the date of release comes and goes and The Silver Lining hasn't been released yet, they'll push the release date back a few months again.  And they'll keep doing that until The Silver Lining is released so there will be more people wanting the compilations.  Either that or they're giving their lowest-paid programmers time to convert the games into WinXP-compatible games.  Either way, I'm EAGER, no, ANXIOUS to play King's Quest again!  I want me some King's Quest baby!  >.<  If they push the release date back a YEAR...I'll go crazy!!  Like, mental institution crazy!  CRAZY CRAZY!!  :P  :P  :suffer:  :P  :suffer:  :suffer:  :P  :suffer:  :suffer:  :suffer:

Maybe I'm already crazy!  RELEASE IT ALREADY!!  I'm waiting for the Wal-Mart's release date of Dec 15th to go by and see what Wal-Mart does.

VU can get on my nerves a lot. I really don't even think these things are real! Almost every website has completely different release dates. Maybe they're just for research purposes to see an interest or something. And then they'll cancel them or something, and then later announce a new KQ game or something... But that's just my brain working out physically impossible variations of life... aside from the non-existence of the compilations. That is very real in any reality, if you ask me... :P

This is most likely real. It has been up on numerous websites for a month or two. There is also a leisure suit larry one. They're probably just finishing up with them like someone said earlier. It's a damn good thing for people like these guys who are so dedicated and want to continue the series.
Title: Re: Check this out!

They might be real, but they have a lack of info on them. If they're real, then they must have some pretty damn good explanation as to the so far two delays, and most likely more... I believe they are real, but I am skeptical at times. I wonder if they are putting in special features or something. Like a preview for an official KQ9 or a demo of The Silver Lining or the remakes AGD is making... I always hope these compilations have some hidden feature in them, but I see that as nearly impossible. Some people say they are merely protecting their copyrights, but if that is so, then why is there no QFG compilation? It boggles my mind. I also wonder whether these compilations will feature all games in the series, or just the "good" ones. Like if the KQ compilation had MoE in it, or not. I would personally hope so so I could at least own all of the games. It's just so weird.

Walmart.com-3/21/06

Amazon-3/30/06

IGN/Gamespy-Last month

I know this isn't really the right place, but I remember from when TSL was shut down that people wrote to Daniel Oskun, and I remember this statement:

"At this time we do not have enough inquiries from the public at large for us to pass on this information to the Producers of the kings quest game to reconsider this decision to reopen the project."

I'm left wondering what he means by "the producers of the King's Quest game to reconsider"... If you notice, it doesn't say Games, and it leaves me thinking maybe they have another game in the works that isn't known. I'm probably wrong, but it's just what I've noticed, so... If I'm in the wrong place, please direct me to the right place.

And on topic, I sent an e-mail to VU to ask them what's going on with the Compilations. I sent it to the Report Piracy e-mail address, so I might not have the right address...
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: Yonkey on March 04, 2006, 05:49:50 PM
If I recall correctly, it didn't even say "King's Quest game", it said "king of quest game", so don't bother focusing too much on what the guy wrote. ;P  Based on the horrible grammar and lack of contact information, he was probably just some intern they hired to respond to everyone.  ::)

I'm pretty sure they're not working on a ninth game, because they definitely would have announced it if they were.  At minimum, they would have told us. :P

As for the compilations, I have no clue why they're constantly being delayed. :-\ However, writing to the Report Piracy address won't get you any answers.  Your best bet is probably posting in their forums under the official thread about them.
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: dark-daventry on March 04, 2006, 07:50:57 PM
I tried. Believe me, the moderators themselves have no idea on the answer. They keep asking for a developer to go on, and no one does. But that's the world of VU. Which I actually respect more now thanks to your revival. If they let you die, I'd hunt them down for the rest of eternity. I could never let my Beloved King's quest die an unfitting end. And all those who help KQ are true fans. I tried to help by writing books of them, which never did so well. I could never get them right, and they never went past two pages. But everyone also helped with the Save KQIX campaign! Thank the powers that be! I love you, POS! (Especially Say!)

Sorry for double posting, but I saw something on some website regarding this thing. Here it is:

Packaged Height: 150 hundredths-inches
Packaged Length: 750 hundredths-inches
Packaged Weight: 65 hundredths-pounds
Packaged Width: 525 hundredths-inches

Now I'm bad with math, so I can't possibly figure out how big this would be. But maybe some of you can... I also noticed that IGN and Gamespy bumped the release date from January to March 30th... I just hope they don't delay them again. When I get a response from the company, I'll post it, especially if it's a good one that actually explains what I want... We'll see though... Key word Supposedly... I'd be willing to bet they'll delay these again... Maybe it's "Market Research"... I had seen in some forum that someone said an official KQ9 would be released in 2007. She claimed that her uncle works for the company and did some artwork for it or something... I have a feeling these compilations may have a preview or something in them. But that's just what I think... It's a gut feeling. And if anything significant happens with these, then I'll post it. Like what's in them when they arrive at my house, I'll post the contents and what not...

It doesn't really look very credible to me.  She even refers to them as "Sierra" instead of Vivendi, and most of her posts were revivals of topics that were years old. ::)

Again, I apologize for double posting, but I think it important. I have discovered that the compilations can ship to select cities outside the US. check out amazon to see for yourself. Now all we can do is wait and see what happens to these things... I am still waiting for a reply from VU.

I know I'm triple posting  but this is IMPORTANT! We'll have to wait until DECEMBER 31st!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I knew they would delay them again! Again, I apologize to the mods and everyone else, but I thought it important! Feel free to edit this in any way!

UPDATE: SQ is listed for December 1st, 2006! Everything else is the 31st of December. I'm shocked!

December 31st?  Hmm, maybe VU wants the games' re-release to coincide with the TSL's completion.  That's about as optimistic as I can get about this.  :(
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: dark-daventry on March 15, 2006, 01:38:53 PM
Maybe there's something they aren't telling us. Maybe there is a KQIX in the works, but we don't know about it yet. But that's just my dreaming. I still can't help but think they are working on an official KQIX. And I doubt that TSL would be released then. That's a day away from 2007, and they said 2006. But I could be worng! :-\

WHY VU? WHY? WHY DO YOU TORTURE ME?
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: awesomeasapossum on March 16, 2006, 05:36:58 AM
Even if VU does release their own KQIX I'll still treat TSL as the TRUE KQIX. I will still call it KQIX and it will be KQIX. If VU does release their own KQIX I'll play it after I've beaten the REAL KQIX and I will treat it as a spin-off of POS' TSL which IS KQIX. I don't think that VU could make one as good as fans of the games could.
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: dark-daventry on March 16, 2006, 01:22:32 PM
Precisely. I'll do exactly what you said! The fans truly know what should happen. Fan fiction is a great example. There is a lot of great fan fiction out there, and most of it is good!

Edit- To avoid double posting, I will edit my posts with updates. Amazon has asked me to approve the delay. I now have a ship date of January 2nd, 2007, and a delivery of January 4th, 2007. They must have a good reason for delaying these. I suspect a KQIX in the works. There is evidence to support my theory, as follows:

1. VU wanted the game shut down. That may not be so much evidence, but still.

2. There is also the name change from KQIX to TSL.

3. There is a hint in a letter from Daniel Oskun, who was responding to letters about the shut down. He said, "At this time, we do not have enough inquieries from the public at large to pass this on to the developers of the King's Quest game..." That's as good as I could get to word for word.

4. There is a post made at the Sierra Planet forums, in which a girl claimed her uncle worked on artwork for KQIX, and that it would be out in 2007.

That's about all I have currently...

Title: Re: Check this out!

Okay, dark-daventry, but then why did VU Games give TSL a fan liscence and not integrate them into an Official KQIX development team? one of the options that may have been supposedly talked over with VU is commercial adoption of the game for production. If they were producing an Official game, why would they let TSL continue?
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: dark-daventry on March 20, 2006, 12:46:03 PM
Here are my theories on that: They granted them a fan license because they had four years worth of development on it, and they didn't want to throw it all away for nothing. They also did this because of the overwhelming support of the fans. And what other reason would they delay these things three times for a long time? It makes no sense to me. You may not agree with me, but it is what I believe, so...
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: Lollotte on March 22, 2006, 12:55:37 PM
Okay, then why didn't they make them part of the Official KQIX development team? And why hasn't Roberta or Ken Williams heard anything about it?
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: dark-daventry on March 22, 2006, 02:42:51 PM
It's just a speculation, okay! I'm not the best at doing all these things!  Sorry if I sound mad, it's just I haven't thought it all out yet. But when they were doing a new LSL, the creator, or something like that, wasn't told. So it could be the same here. Or maybe she does know something, and we aren't being told... And about them not being on the development team, isn't it possible that they shut this thing down because of a new KQIX, and then brought it back because of the fans, but also having a new KQIX that they are focused on, and just gave in to us? It's just a speculation, nothing more. (Well, actually, I really believe that they are working on a KQIX, but still. At core, it's still a spec...)
Title: Re: Check this out!
Post by: Yonkey on March 22, 2006, 05:04:06 PM
There are a lot of reasons why I don't believe VU's working on an official KQIX, but since this thread's about the Compilations, I'll try not to go too off-topic.

Firstly, I'm pretty skeptical that the compilations even exist, due to the serious lack of information and the constant date pushing.  But, if they were planning on bundling an official KQIX with them, they wouldn't keep the price at $25.  If anything they'd triple or quadruple it. :-X

Secondly, they could have easily told us that our game would interfere with theirs, and mentioned the existence of such game during our negotiations.  They probably would have had more people supporting their decision with the C&D if they mentioned they were going to officially continue the series.  But then again, they could also get a lot of people bashing and/or boycotting it; so it's hard to say either way. ::)

Thirdly, why would they waste time and money developping KQIX from scratch when they could use what we've already been working on for the past 4 years?  This could mean anything from them hiring our team to officially develop the game, to buying the game from us, to confiscating the game and continuing from where we left off. :S

And finally, while they're skimping on the marketing for the Collections, they definitely would not skimp on the marketing for an official KQIX.  They already know there is a great demand from the thousands of people out there that are excited about this game and interested in the series.  It really doesn't make sense for them to develop the game completely in secret and lose out on all the massive publicity they got. :-\

You know, I would actually buy an official KQIX if they said they are making one.  But, it would completely depend on their marketing.  If they kept everything hidden like the Compilations, I wouldn't.  If they marketed it as MoE 2, or something that's definitely not KQ-related, I wouldn't buy that either.  Actually, unless their game was as good or better than TSL, I really wouldn't be interested in whatever they create. :P

As I said earlier even if VU does make their own KQIX yours would still be the REAL KQIX. And I will still call it that. (Unless some random Vivendi-secret-scout is right there.)
Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread

You make some good points, but you do have to consider all the delays this thing has had. I have gotten e-mails from VU regarding the authenticity of these. They confirmed them, as did Gamespot, so therefore they exist for the moment. They could cancel them in the future, but as far as we know, they exist. I still believe strongly that they are developing a KQIX. My ideas are my ideas, and they will always be my ideas. I am entitled to my ideas. Sorry to sound mean, as I have no intention of being mean. (Besides, how could I be mean to the group that did the one thing I wanted to do but had a serious lack of resources? You guys did the ultimate thing, and I'll forever be in your debt for that. My dad doesn't quite understand why you're doing this for free. In fact, he doesn't believe it. To him it makes no sense. To me, it makes perfect sense!)

Again, I apologize for my mean comments. If you want to suspend my account or anything, please do so at your own freewill. I am ready to accept the consequences of my actions. And I apologize in advance for any future comments of the sort.

Sorry, I really didn't mean it that way. It's just the fact that it was  originally thought it that was going to come out in January, now the date's in December. I also find it somewhat suspicious that there's no QFG compilation. Then there's also the rumor that it's just there to shut down Abandonware sites...There's a lot that speaks against it.

I did get an e-mail from the company, and they said that it's real, but that there is no release date as of yet. Which is strange, as Amazon has it listed as December 31st. Maybe it's a placeholder. Or maybe your right, afterall, Deloria. I just hope it's not to shut down abandonwere! I want it to be something more than that! But if they are shutting down Abandonwere, then why is there no QFG, as you said? And I was kidding, Deloria. It was all done for dramatic effects.

Sorry I guess I didn't clarify.

A little while ago, back before it got delayed to December on Amazon.com, it said: "Available from Target".
So I headed to Target.com

These past few days, not including yesterday and today, it had said: "Available on 3/24/2006". Now apparently it says out of stock. I'm guessing its one of these: 1. It hasn't arrived yet. 2. It got sold out. 3. It got delayed again and Target.com just didn't update it. I guess only time will tell.

Wow, these forums are more active. I should come here more often.

I am absolutely thrilled that it is coming that a compilation is coming out for XP.

To be able to play the King's Quest Collection 2 Set that I bought several years ago, I had to dual-boot my PC, re-install tons of software, have three partitions for the different OS, and lost data. I was finally able to play King's Quest 1-4, 6 but 5 and 7 are STILL inoperable.
Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread

well I have read this entire thread from inception to end and I have thoroughly enjoyed the chronology of the conversation.  I would like to throw in my theory about these events.

I believe that these compilations are real. They are more than likely continuing to push these back to include the entire series of KQIX into this compilation.  This was more than likely one of the stipulations that Vivendi had to allow TSL continue to completion.  With the inclusion of the new KQIX, they may be betting this will bolster sales for the collection.  (Similar to way that DVD's have an increase in sales as a new installment in the series is released.  People love reliving the previous parts of a series before they watch the newest installment).  The fact that Vivendi does not have to pay anything for the creation of KQIX, this may explain why the compilation is so cheap (However this does not explain the thus far undecided point on whether the previous games have been reprogrammed to work smoothly on XP, emphasis on the smoothly).

These are just the thoughts of a lowly KQ fan.  Take them or leave them.

I would be willing to buy this new compilation based solely on the fact that these games will be able to work easily on XP.  I do not need all the extra stuff, or even TSL as it will be coming out for free (eventually......  I say take your time creating this game as it is time well spent).  I currently own the Roberta Williams anthology which I believe is bar none the best compilation thus far that has come out for these games.  It includes everything Roberta Williams had ever done up to that point.  So therefore I wouldn't need any extras, just the KQ games to work for me!!!!

I've done longer! That was good! I think you're right on both aspects! There is a reason they're delaying them. Some say that they are backwords engineering them. I'm not so sure about this. But we will see at some point. Check my other posts, and you'll see it's not a new one Yonkey! I posted june before!  :( No one pays attention to my posts...   :(

I'm more likely to believe the December date than any of the June ones, but then again, they could just as easily push the Dec one into next year. ::)

frankly I think the December date is just a cure all to get everyone to leave them alone as deadline keep coming up and then passing.  If this were a marketing ploy to find out if people are still really interested in the King's Quest games, letting release dates come and go unanswered would be very bad PR for their company (however they don't seem to be entirely worried about bad PR, killing Sierra and all).  There really must be a valid reason for the continual pushing back of the release date.  Let's not forget the chronology of this issue.  The deadline was pushed back right around the same time the letter from Vivendi came out to stop production of TSL.  This cannot just be an odd coincidence.  I am going with my gut and it says the deadline issue is very closely related to the issues involving TSL.

Title: Letter to VUG
Post by: dark-daventry on April 16, 2006, 11:05:30 AM
I am currently writing a letter to VUG about the compilations, and would like your input on my letter!

6060 center drive, 5th floor
Los Angeles, CA 90045

Dear Vivendi Universal Games,

I am writing to you regarding the King’s Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry compilations due to be released. My concern is the constant delays, and the various release dates.
Amazon has three of them listed for December 31st, 2006, with the Space Quest compilation due for December 1st, 2006. Walmart has June 1st, 2006 for all four of them, while target appears to have no listing of them as they used to! CD Universe has June 4th, 2006. Can you tell me why on earth there are various release dates, why they are getting delayed, and if these things even exist.
Speculation says that you are doing “market research”, or that you’re protecting your IP. I have no idea whether any of this is true to any degree, but myself and many fans would greatly appreciate a more detailed answer than, “They are real, but currently no date has been set.” I am wanting these things badly, but with the delays and the various dates, it leads me to believe that you only wish to fool us. I know that there has to be a reason why these are delayed, and some say you are Backwards Engineering them, while others say you are working on a preview of an official King’s Quest IX. No one but you or inside sources know the truth, and we all deserve a credible answer! Some even went to say that these collections won’t even include all 8 of the games! I would love to see a compilation where we can own all the games in the series! And I notice that there is also no Quest for Glory compilation, which is a dissapointment, as I never got to play those games.
So, do you think we, the fans of these wonderful games, have a more detailed explanation of their situation right now? Could you try to answer my questions here with as much information as you can give me?

I did as best I could without using spell check for the moment, and I do have to change things, but could any of you put in some comments? (Especially team members, as they dealt with VU before, so their input would be quite nice!)

Thanks!

It looks good, but I would also add URL's in there to the respective places where you saw those dates.  Since you don't know specifically who will be reading your letter, it's usually a good thing to spell things out for them.

Well, reading the letter I have noticed a few things.  While it's intent on discovering the truth of the situation is good, some phrasings could be taken as insulting by Vivendo.  Instead of accusing them of " it leads me to believe that you only wish to fool us.", you could say "I am confused at the cause of these delays".  Also, demanding an answer from them will do little to help the situation.  They will take it as insulting at best.  Truly the only thing you can do is request, while with some force behind it, that they enlighten us, the fans, to their reasoning of contiually delaying the release dates to these compiliations.

I am not here to tell you how to write your inquiry to Vivendi in any way.  I am merely giving suggestions that may or may not help.  In my experience with dealing with businesses, threats and accusations do little to help a situation where they hold the power of deciding whether or whether not shed some light on this situation.  Good luck dark.  I sincerely hope you success in discovering the truth to the situation.  If you do find out, I have no doubt you will share with the rest of us.

Instead of saying "myself and many fans," *shudders* say "many fans and I." Saying "I am wanting" sounds VERY odd, and it would be safer to correct it to "I want." Instead of saying starting a sentence with a conjuction, start the "And I notice..." sentence with "Also, I've noticed."

Proper grammar gets people taken seriously. :P

I understand that you only wish to help, and that is what I asked. Your feedback is greatly appreciated! My history teacher is trying to get all the kids in his class to get in the habit of making their first draft, a rough draft, and not a final draft. He says he wants us to go over our work well, the problem being he contradicts that, as he does no such thing, or at least it is implied that way. In every set of directions, there's at least two spelling errors, words missing, or something of the sort! (I guess he writes on a computer without spell check!)

Forgive my double posting, please! But I have uncovered something of importance on Target's website. They now have the compilations back on the site, for the date of June 4th, 2006. That just leaves Amazon to change the date, under the assumption that Amazon has the wrong date. (Which I hope is the case!) You may not find this important, but it brings us one step closer to uncovering the truth. When I get back from work, I will try to work more on my letter, and maybe having it sent out tomorrow while I'm at school...

Alas, I have not mailed it yet, as I am on a laptop with no printer, and I'm currently in The Hanover Inn in Hanover NH, at Dartmouth College, and will be here until tomorrow morning, by which time it will take me two hours to go home, then I'd have to print the letter, get an envelope, stamp, mail it, and wait two-three months for a response, if any... So, it could be a while before any response goes out. And I will be watching websites carefully, to see for any new developments in the compilations. I hear that MoE won't be included in it, though. I hear it's only 1-7. That's what some sites are saying.

Edit: Forum Stretching

The 1997 colleciton is my connection to KQ. I think I might buy it again, because most of the discs are scratched to oblivion.

But perhaps this new collection can help me out.  :)

I still wonder about the new KQ collection and if it will add anything compared to previous collections.

Hmmm, both dates set are for the first week of August. I wonder if that is when VG will allow TSL to be released...

I don't know. Amazon is the same as always! I don't think that's it. And besides, I don't even think VG has looked at it yet, besides the demo they got. The game hasn't even been beta-tested! I would think that when the game is beta-tested and all that, then maybe, but I don't believe for now.

You know, the compilation is beginning to become more elusive than the loch ness monster and big foot combined: Often mentioned, but never captured on film *ahem* (box artwork would be nice to bolster my faith in it's existence).  So far the only images of it have turned to actually be blurry images of weather satellites......

Quesr on Daventry Citizens...

But there were pictures taken of what was mistaken to be the loch-ness monster :P (the whole monster story was a sham, it was just someone in a submarine)

You might be right. I don't know...

EDIT:  This is from CD Universe: Vivendi Games and Sierra Entertainment have bundled seven of their popular KING’S QUEST games together into the KINGS QUEST COMPILATION for the PC. Gamers can now step into a magical world full of adventure and fun without purchasing each installment separately. The collection includes KINGS QUEST I through KINGS QUEST VII. Each of the games features a full storyline and adventure full of interesting characters and challenges. The first KINGS QUEST stars Sir Graham, a brave knight on a quest to retrieve three magical artifacts in order to win the crown of King Edward the Benevolent. All of the games take place in the same world, although players won’t always play the same character. KINGS QUEST IV, for example, puts gamers in the role of Rosella, the daughter of King Graham (the same Graham from the first game). Rosella must journey through the land in search of a magical fruit to cure her father. She and her mother Queen Valanice then return in KINGS QUEST VII, and this time players will take turns controlling the brave women as they try to escape from a magical land. Getting to see the development of the characters over time is one of the highlights of the KINGS QUEST COMPILATION. Gamers looking for a collection full of adventure, magic, and wonderful characters need look no further than the KINGS QUEST COMPILATION. Players will get lost for hours in this magical world as they battle the forces of evil.

And the following is also: Includes seven complete games; Get a preview of KINGS QUEST: Mask of Eternity; Includes three other games: THE COLONEL’S BEQUEST, THE DAGGER OF AMON RA, and MIXED-UP MOTHER GOOSE.

This is also: SPACE QUEST COMPILATION by Sierra and Vivendi Games for the PC takes some of the most beloved and classic Space Quest games and combines them into one package. The original Space Quest was a fun and exciting game that combined the interesting aspects of science fiction with the offbeat humor and parody style that was to become the series’ trademark. Many of the follow up games that were released kept in this same genre and style of gaming to make for hours of innocent fun as players reconnect with this enthralling series that first captured them fifteen years ago. However, SPACE QUEST COMPILATION will also be a treat for those players who have never had the chance to play the games before. Before long players of all ages will find out what it means to go out on a Space Quest.

And so is this: POLICE QUEST COMPILATION by Vivendi Universal and Sierra Online for the PC takes players behind the scene as they try to unravel various cases as they look at all the evidence and piece it all together. The collection offers players a chance to play five different games under a single package: POLICE QUEST: Open Season, POLICE QUEST 2: The Vengeance, POLICE QUEST 3: The Kindred, POLICE QUEST: In Pursuit of the Death Angel, and POLICE QUEST: SWAT. In each of these games players will need to put together their cases using clues provided to them, the rules and regulations, and the proper police procedures. Gamers must manage to do all of this while still maneuvering around the constructs of the game. The variety of games offers players the chance to work their way through thirty different objectives. However, players don’t have to traverse through all of these POLICE QUESTS on their own. If they choose, they can easily allow for up to three players with the multiplayer online feature that will give them hours of enjoyable Internet play. With the rising popularity of crime dramas, gamers have been asking for something to experience these unfolding cases on their own, and POLICE QUEST COMPILATION answers these demands head on. Because it is an extensive collection of games that provide players with many different options and missions, players will wonder how they ever managed to play without it before. That is what makes the game a must have edition for adventure gamers.

And this: Five different games; Online multiplayer mode; Thirty different cases to solve.

That's about what I can gather for the moment!

Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread
Post by: koko_99_2001 on July 03, 2006, 06:43:18 AM
Well, sounds like a good idea, but I believe POS just has a fan license and are not getting paid, as they would with a contract. So I doubt that they'd have much say on when the compilation was released.
Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread
Post by: TheReturnofDMD on July 03, 2006, 01:08:12 PM
Well, someone over at the ADG forums, apparently, he was a senior member, so he's respectable and I think he's part of their team, he said that "our contacts within Vivendi tell us that the compilations are on schedule for release later this year."
Maybe they are going to come out, but they're actually reverse engineering them to make them XP Compatible, and when you're working with 8 games, that would probably take some time, especially if there's problems. I mean...back in October when people thought they were coming out then, the compilations sold awesomely: they reached within the top 50 sellers on Amazon, which is very good for  compilations of games that haven't been released in years with no promotion.

I don't see why they should reverse engineer anything... they should have the source code for those games :S
Unless I'm totally off here, all they have to do is change the game engines code a bit to make it XP compatible, or just pack in some invisible emulators with the games :-\
Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread
Post by: TheReturnofDMD on July 05, 2006, 05:10:23 AM
Well, this may or may not be what's really going on, but Ken Williams seems to think that somewhere along the lines after all the chaos and changes of hands, that Sierra probably lost the original source codes to the games.

That was my thoughts exactly when I first heard of these Compilations.  I seriously doubt they'd update any source code and thought it's more likely that Vivendi licensed DOSBox and would burn them all to one DVD, or 2-3 CD's. 8)

This is a good reason to have a dual-boot computer with Windows 98SE and XP Home/Professional like I do.  98SE has been able to run all of the KQ collection of mine which is the Roberta Williams Anthology without any trouble.  Another solution for those of you with XP would be to download and try running the King's Quest games from Virtual PC for XP which is now available for free from the folks at Microsoft.  There is also DosBox and other solutions.

The race is on and who will win.  Will it be the release of Shadows: the first installment of The Silver Lining or will it be the King's Quest Compilation.  The way things are going my guess will be on Shadows.  More Confusion:

Wal-Mart -- Nov.1, 2006
Amazon -- Dec. 31, 2006
Cd Universe -- Nov 4, 2006
GameSpy thoughts -- sometime in Dec. 2006

I seriously wonder if the compilation will be released this year and if it is why not have the release date in early December so VU can catch Christmas buyers.  Go Figure . . .

EDIT: Disregard the no updates. CD Universe has changed it's date to september 15th...

Target for November 4th, 2006

Walmart- September 12th, 2006.

My thoughts: It seems that two sites have reasonably close dates listed,  and taking into account that Amazon recently listed them for August could indicate that it was a last minute change, and september may be the lucky month. On the other hand, never get your hopes up with Vivendi. They only wish to deceive us. How dare they. Shame on them!

Thanks yonkey! Anyway, just for kicks I tried bamzu and found nothing. I guess I'm just doing random internet searches to find something of interest. When I saw a package in the mail today and I heard something that sounded like cds in it, I got a bit excited. then I glanced at the recipient, and it was my mom. Then I looked at what company sent it. It dawned on me that it was only my shoe arches. I think VUs done a number on my sanity! XD

EDIT: To avoid double posting, I will simply edit this post even though what I have to say has nothing to do with the above. I searched the compilations on Amazon and guess what I found: A rating. The KQ compilation is now rated T for Teen. That's just so you all know. If you ever care that is...

EDIT 2: I'm back with updates! CD Universe has moved them to september 15th.. Amazon is still december 31st... Walmart is September 12th... Target is september 15th... That's all I have. I am now going to go and bug Sierra/VG for any news. If you'll excuse me... *in back room* No cookie Monsterk, no cookies for you until you let Sierra know my wrath... No, no cookie dough. Don't make me put you back in rehab! *out of back room

Bye!

I don't know if if it represents MoE or KQ3 or not, but the box says on it 7 complete games... plus, it doesn't really seem to reflect anything from 3... I mean you've got your wizard dude who seems really happy about the guy fighting the dragon, but the dragon in 3 has 3 heads and is quite green. I think it's more a reflexion of "this is a fantasy adventure gaming classic: buy it, ok!?"

Maybe it's Manannan at the top but Connor in the ball. It shows how it's ALL of the KQ games?

But...7...MoE...wha...? XD

Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread
Post by: Delling on August 29, 2006, 11:50:49 AM
I've come up with another interpretation: Manannan was an evil old dude who reveled in the destruction of daventry at the hands of the 3-headed dragon, but it's stated that he did so b/c he hated humanity or some such (he was a misanthrop is basically all I'm going for here) So, what is there to say that he didn't revel in other things wherein dragons kicked around humans and whatnot... It's possible what with his being a wizard and all that he could see into the future through his crystal ball... so it could be Connor in MoE fighting a dragon (even if MoE isn't included)... and I've never played all of MoE, but maybe... ...small reddish dragons are common enemies in some part of it or something... ... (that was longer than I thought it would be)
Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread
Post by: Rosella on August 29, 2006, 11:54:26 AM
But it would still be odd to mention Connor on a box cover for a compilation that doesn't have MoE. They aren't allowed to get rid of 3-7 because they aren't. So which game isn't there? :S

EDIT: And hold up, where did we learn that there are only 7 games in it? :P

EDIT EDIT: Oops. I guess I missed the shiny sticker thing. XD

Also, they have an OFFICIAL DATE of fall 2006! Enjoy! (I did not read all of the posts. I only rushed here to post these. Please tell me if I need to edit anything...)

They got the number right on the SQ box...but there are 6 Larry games, not counting that newfangled thing they made. Is it just a typo, or are they leaving stuff out? And are they including the VGA\SCI remakes? Gah! Too many questions! :P

Wait, what the hula-hoop? The number of games is like a countdown!

6 complete games!

perhaps it's that not even Vivendi with all its evil liaisons with darkness can get some games to work in XP ::)

I would merely assume that they left out MoE: 1) in its actual release it was called KQ:MoE not MoE 2) it's bigger and 3) because of the fan reaction to MoE in the first place... after all 'twas MoE :stabs: fair KQ

EDIT: bad apostrophe, you don't belong there

Interesting... Very interesting... I think it may just be a coinceidnece. But if it is, then it seems a bit unlikely that the LSL has only five when six were made, excluding #7. As for MoE, it does not concern/bother me that it is not included, when I already own it! (I keep it for keepsake purposes. You know, a collection!) And there is the possibility that this compilation could sell well to spark a ninth installment. But I believe that TSL will always be my fav ninth KQ. I would certainly play an official ninth installment, but I still think TSL may be better, because of the time and dedication taken in it's design and creation. It was created by fans, for fans, and that makes the best possible game experience, as the fans are the ones who really know a game. Anyway, I believe this compilation was made to test the waters for an official ninth installment, and that goes for the others as well. But I also believe that this was made to allow people to relive the old days, the glory days, as well as bring in potential new fans and customers. And I'm sure that money pays a visit in the design process as well.

Yeah, I'd have to say with: the box art, the change in CEO for Vivendi Games, and the domain and name change from VU to Sierra, it's very likely these compilations will come out now. XD Fall 2006 sounds like one release date that they won't be slipping this time! ;D
Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread

And, considering that three sites all have September dates, either the 12th or the 15th, it is the fall, and it seems a tad more likely now. And it also means that things are looking for the better now as well. I was always wondering what happened to the box art. I just hope that this compilation is worth the waiting we've been enduring for eternities. If this date does not get delayed, then I will make a note to myself to remove the VU just wants totorture us thing in my sig. If they did want to torture us, they would delay this five more times and finally announce (or lie) that they were either drunk all this time, or that it never existed in the first place and say that they were testing the waters for a new internet based prank system similar to punk'd. Although all fingers crossed this is not the case...

Nah, once you see box art, you know it's already been packaged and ready for shipment.  It's no longer a false promise. 8)  The question is, why did they do this a year ago when they could have just done it all now instead? XD

Time blows away just like the wind... But still, this compilation had better be good. Otherwise I'd be mad. Rumors say it could be a simple repackaging of the orignal cllection II. But if so, what about the other three? Would those make any sense for such a thing? Especially LSL... Did the orignal collection of LSL have all six games? Or did it have only five? Special features are reportedly a preview of the next KQ. In other words, a preview of MoE. From what I can tell, the descriptions are simply stolen from the collection II. I doubt these are repackages. It's just my opinion. I don't quite see why they would include a preview of MoE when it was released years ago. It makes no sense to me. What about you?

Well, it looks like Sierra will release the compilations in time for Christmas and other winter holidays and hopefully if it is a big moneymaker for them then there will be another official King's Quest.  I hope that it is really good but I do appreciate the work done by TSL team and perhaps all the interest in this site and the granting of a fan license contributed to a possible continuation of the King's Quest series.
Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread

It would be pretty cool if they put our game demo on the KQ Compilation, like how Sierra did in the past in order to promote upcoming games.  They haven't contacted us yet, but if they'd like to do so they certainly have my permission. ;D

EDIT: Grammar. XD

That definately would be sweet.  I think that even if Sierra made mention of this site and the fan game then all of the current fans here (including of course the makers of TSL --  :P) would feel at least somewhat satisfied.

Well I once had a copy of Collection 2, the box had a sticker on the front that said, "7 complete games". In small print on the back of the box it said something like "3 bonus games, and preview of 8th installment".

It could be that they are reusing the advertisement style from collection 2...

I know that one version of the collection 2 that had a sticker that said 10 complete games though.

The sierra website has a section advertising MOE, but no way to buy it.

Is it just me... or does Amazon lower the price on the KQ compilation every time they change the release date?

Also it seems ton me that PQ, SQ, KQ, and LSL were all $19.95 when this thread was started and now all but KQ are $21.95 (KQ being $18.95 now.)

possum- If you work at VU and have the compilations as indicated in your signature, then why would you have to buy them?

(and is MOKNEY intentional or did you misspell MONKEY like you did OPOSSUM?)
Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread

Yes, MOKNEY and possum were mis-spelled on purpose. And I'm buying them because since I only work in advertising I can't get them for free. (But I can get the boxes for free.)

Can you post pics of the boxes? Or send pics to amazon to post in their description?

But probably you are overstepping your bound merely by discussing future product with us, and you would get in trouble for revealing future product packaging.

(I know I'm not allowed to reveal ANY information about future prducts where I work unless it has been revealed in a company press release.)

Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread

I think I'm missing something here... Where I work, they tell me nothing of what's to come. (Mainly because there is nothing to come. I work in the lowest department of my job. I have to bag groceries and then take them out...) But I would think that Possum wouldn't be told too much about future products. (Or am I wrong?) But Amazon still has no covers yet for these. When they arrive at my doorstep, I shall post the packaging of them and their contents. (If I remember that is!)

Seriously, I started reading this thread when it was around two pages long.  But when VU kept pushing back the release date, I lost interest.  I just happened to check in again when the last post on the forum board said something like, "KQ Compilation to be released Aug. 4!"

As usual, I jump in at the next to last page to see what's been said recently, before I post something really stupid.

Such as:
Dark Dav: Hey Possum what the heck is the MOKNEY shrine?
Possum: It's the whosie whatsit huh huh.
Dark Dav: Just wondering.
Ciborium: Hey Possum what the heck is the MOKNEY shrine? :D

Want to hear the ultimate disappointment???  My hubby agreed to get this for me (with a lot of nudging and pleading...he knows I will be absent for HOURS when these things come out) for CHRISTMAS!  :X

I may have convinced him to get it as a "surprise" for me for our anniversary, but that's STILL early December.  I'm telling you, I just won't be able to make it that long if I know it's out there.   ;P

Anybody wanna share???   :flirt:  I could tell him I'm taking a class or something that lasts for like 8 hours a day for 2 weeks solid.  LOL  (He's reading this over my shoulder now, and he is doing this... ::))  Maybe this will convince him that early presents are ok, too... Hee hee.

Hmmm...my daughter's birthday is in early October...maybe I'll just buy it for HER instead of waiting.  Yeah, she's only going to be TWO, but it's never too early to start, right?   ;)  Some of you guys have told me that you started before the age of 6...2 is close to 6 isn't it?  WAIT!!!  I'VE GOT IT...kids really only like to play with the BOXES, right?  Well, I will make the sacrifice and let her play with the box it comes in while I take those shiny round things on the inside.  Hmmm...this plan is sounding better to me all the time... 8)

Whoo -- boy and getting the spelling of Rumplestiltskin right in the original KQ 1 version --- WOW! --- I wonder how many people figured that one out on their own and I certainly did not

Anyway, I am excited that the compilations are being released and I hope they do really well especially the King's Quest series that they convince Sierra to release another King's Quest and even if it is 9 then there will be two King's Quest 9 versions --- LOL --- Yes, I know The Silver Lining is not called King's Quest 9 anymore but it definitely feels like King's Quest 9 from the preview version - <grin>

Here's what I think. The compilations have potential, but the sales will depend on if it is sold in stores as well as online. Right now Gamestop and EB Games list it, so it may be sold within stores, and if it is, then I believe it will sell very well. If it is an online exclusive, then that is another story! TSL will be KQ9 for me because it came before any others!

With LSL didn't they skip a game in the series or am I mistaken?  In addition, it will be interesting to see if the series are in retail stores like Best Buy and also in retail stores internationally.  Finally, it seems like most of the specialty game stores in the U.S. now seem to have exclusively video games or only a really small selection of computer games that is so unlike 15 years ago.

I don't quite get what you mean by skipped a game. In my neck of the woods, stores don't even sell PC games as much! Only a few branches sell them! Some say the store is too small, so they got rid of them for other consoles! I had to look everywhere for Simcity 4!

My mistake.  I was under the false impression that they missed one.  I stand corrected.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leisure_Suit_Larry

This website shows I was wrong.  Wow, I am really not doing well today on information.  First, the assumption (made an ass out of myself) for thinking that shades idea of turning off Direct X sound acceleration was ridiculous and would not work for getting TSL to work in 98SE and guess what I tried it today and it works fine.  If you want more information, then see programming thread with system requirements in forum.

We all have bad days! It happens! I do things similar at work! I do something and realize I embarrased myself. (I hate it when I do that!) I once hit a guy, and the cart I was pushing got pushed against me, my arm getting torn back a little. (Actually, I was pulliing it, and it was this past weekend...)

Dew: You were right the first time. (Did you click on LSL 4: The Missing Floppies?) They did skip 4. But that doesn't explain why the LSL collection doesn't include 7 and MCL.

MCL I can believe, but not the others!
Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread
Post by: ciborium on September 12, 2006, 05:38:59 PM
I never played any of the LSL games so I wouldn't know.
My response was just to the point that Dew7 said that his link showed that they didn't skip #4, when it actually says that they did.

BOT
(Hopefully) Only three days left.
I think I will actually wait until amazon or Wal*Mart show it as being released and in stock before I order it.  Although I'll probably drive down to the local Wal*Mart / Best Buy / EB Games / GameStop (read everywhere within twenty miles) looking to see if anyone has it on the shelf first.  I prefer keeping my local economy going like that.  Even if it means paying a couple of dollars more.  (At least I save on shipping costs.)
(That and my computer doesn't have a bill/coin accepter.)

I do not believe Walmart will have it in stores. Their website seems plausible though. I am not totally sure about Gamestop and EB games. The branches near me no longer sell PC games. (except for two brances. One by targets has an extremely limited stock of them, and the gamestop at the mall has a slightly bigger stock...) I doubt that the branches near me are going to have these compilations at all... But that is my neck of the woods...

UPDATE:

Collections will be available IN STORES as well as online. They come with manuals that are on disk (as most game manuals are these days) and will be available starting tomorrow on Amazon, and by the 18th at Walmart, Target and (I'm pretty sure) EB Games and GameStop. The programs are in a Licensed Dos-Box wrapper but have been re-coded as well, aparently. This is taken from a quotes of a Sierra employee.

UPDATE:

I got my KQ Collection in the mail today.
It is a small box (but a box rather than a jewel case, heh)  it comes with 2 CDS in slip covers (the same kind of covers my Diablo collection came in) it also came with a tab card for last minute info such as the need to change the colors to 16 colors and info about an error message that might come up. the coverart exactly as shown online.

Good:
*The timer errors have been fixed up, and the games are less buggy.
*The graphica are less pixellated and crisper
*The sound (digital sound) is clearer.
*The games have the original "fade in" and ''fade out'' effects
*The originals (2-3) also look much better
*The games load quick and are widely available.

*The Original KQ1 which made gaming history isn't included, only the SCI remake
*There have been NO recodes or any work done on the games. It is simply the original DOS releases with a version of DosBox slapped on.
*There are no Windows versions of any of the games, only the DOS versions. So, no High-Res KQ6 portraits.
*This may just be my copy (I think is) but the Intro of KQ6 is EXTREMELY skippy, almost unwatchable. It's embarrassing, because even my old standalone KQ6 Dos version isn't as skippy as this ''new'' collection.

So, my final words as a fan are...This collection will be a good, accesible introduction for new fans...But long-term fans will be dissapointed and probably angry....BUT! Do buy these games, if only to increase sales so that we'll show Vivendi that people still care.

The KQ Collection's sales continue to climb up Amazon.com's sales ranking. The KQ Collections sales ranking (out of more than ten thousand video and computer games, and video game console systems) has climbed steadily from 120, to 100, to 85, to 46, to 37 and right now is at number #28 on the sales ranking. So it is selling very, very high.

The SQ Collection is at #60, having made a steady climb itself.

You're right. I am too young. Not my fault I was born in 1991! XD I don't think I should be playing Leisure Suit Larry anyway! XB I'm content with KQ and SQ! I long to play space quest again after all most 10 years. No joke. One of my elementary schools had a computer in the before school program room, and Space Quest one of the games! I just realized that a few years back!

Ugh!  Just got an email from Walmart.com about my preorder of KQ collection:  original release date Sep 18, new release date Sept 22.  They are killing me.  Maybe my husband won't have to listen to me beg and plead after all...it will just keep getting pushed back until December.  lol

I thought someone here already had theirs...where did you get it?

Oh, and P.S.  Just so I don't get a lump of coal in my stocking this year, if I were to buy this collection separately for my NEPHEW and then play HIS games, would that be OK?  That wouldn't put me on Santa's naughty list, would it?   ;)  Hee hee.  Can you tell I'm really trying to find a way around my husband's you-have-to-wait-til-December thing?   ;D

Post by: dark-daventry on September 24, 2006, 05:47:43 PM
My compilations finally arrived on friday! I can't stop playing them! And what's better than that, you ask? THIS! In my area, the King's Quest Collection is the fourth best-selling PC game for September 22! I live in the USA, but I prefer not to disclose where. A hint is New England... Now an official KQIX is even more likely. I have been playing the SQ collection a bit, and seem to "mourn" that a SQ7 was scrapped. It is truly unfortunate that the official SQ7 never came to be... Also, I have heard many negative reviews on amazon. My response is to shut the heck up and play the darn things. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Many say that this does not hold it's promise, but I say it does a lot more... The delays were for a good cause I believe... For one thing, we have original artwork, and not some kind of quick repackaging artwork from the original KQCII. Even if this doesn't have the special features the other one had, I could care less about those! I bought this compilation to own KQ and SQ, NOT the special features... Anywho, that's my run-down of these! I do find the manuals being on disk to be a bit irritating though... Also, my compilations seem to "skip" a little. Especially in the KQ6 intro, everything is slow and choppy. The intro is still watchable, but a bit annoying to the eye (and ear, for that matter.).
Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread
Post by: Syn on September 24, 2006, 07:42:09 PM
hey the slow problems in the games are easily fixed, either replace all the files in the dosbox folder with the new version of dosbox .65 and open the config, and scroll down until you see

core=normal
cycles=6000(7000 for sc)
cycleup=500
cycledown=20

change cylces to "auto" if you replaced the files with the version .65 or if you are still using .63 version open the config and change it to something high, i set mine to 20000, but thats the highest. remember not to change the folder name in the collection folder or it wont work, the movie in kq6 cant be fixed that i know of but its better just to open the kq6 folder and watch the toon there, it has voices in that one

about space quest if you have the SQ1EGA from previous collections then you can add it to the launcher menu. put the SQ1ega folder in the new collection folder like the rest of them, then open the SierraLauncher.ini then change NumButtons=7. type

Game1Name=Space Quest 1 - EGA (w/e you want it called on the launcher)
Game1Prog=dosbox
Game1Path=(name of folder for SQ1ega)
Game1Exe=sierra
Game1Cmd=

if you want it at the end of the list change all the 1's to 7 or if you want it infront of the VGA (like mine) then set it at 1, but dont forget to change the rest of the games up 1 number, no sets can be the same, look at the pic

i tried to add KQ1ega to the collection but since it only holds up to 7 slots, i never got it to work, unless you delete one of the others

I know there is. I found out about it like 2 or 3 years ago... I think it was after tsl... Or before... Can't remember. I was referring in my post to the official SQ7 that Sierra started, but canceled. it had quite an interesting history, and a shame it was cancelled. But these collections bring the possibility of SQ7 becoming an official reality. (I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with fan-games, just that I don't know enough of SQ7 to decide whether I'd like it. The promo movie was good, but I haven't watched it in a while...) These collections also bring the very profitable scenario of an official KQIX. It would be so cool to see two KQIXs! XD The King's Quest collection was the fourth bestselling PC Game for September 22nd in my neck of the woods.

I bought KQ Monday at GameStop in Cincinnati, Ohio.  I live in Florence, KY, so I had to go about 20 miles to pick it up.  If you locate search on GS's site you have to open up the mileage to about 100 to pick up any of the stores.  I couldn't locate the 3 stores in my zip code without doing that.  Most of the stores did not have any in stock, and the stores that did only had 1-2 copies.  I didn't check about PQ, SQ, and LSL.

Confession time: I never finished playing my games... I'm in the middle of SQ6 and KQ6 but never played the ones before them. I never installed my PQ collection yet for some reason... I'm not very fast with games... Especially adventure games. They take so long, but they are so rewarding!
Title: Re: Check this out! - The KQ Compilations Thread
Post by: ciborium on October 07, 2006, 07:34:38 AM
I don't know if this is the best place to post this, but here goes.

I just played and finished KQ7 for the first time.

I edited the config file so now the launcher will launch AGDI's KQ1VGA, KQ2VGA, and IA's KQ3VGA.  I hope Sir Bob and Thessilard finish KQ4VGA.  (With KQ5 being my very first adventure game, I find the text parser a little cumbersome.)  Alas, my copies of KQ5 and KQ6 were lost to oblivion after I grew up and left home.  So I bought the collection for legal copies of KQ5 and KQ6 and to play KQ7 for the first time.

Now to the real reason for my post.  I'm having trouble saving my game in KQ5.  It tells me that the savegame directory is full and when I try to change directories, it says it is invalid.  I have not yet tried with KQ6, and KQ7 worked just fine.  (However, it doesn't run through DosBox.)

As for other series, I played a downloaded copy of PQ1VGA, I enjoyed it okay, but I prefer fantasy/sci-fi.  (Had it been RoboCop Quest, I probably would have played it more.)  I played SQ1VGA and SQ5.  I didn't get past the first puzzle in SQ1 because I didn't know what I was supposed to be doing.  SQ5 I enjoyed and did pretty well, but despite having purchased a legal copy of the game at Best Buy, it came with no manual and therefore did not have the necessary copy protection information so I could repair the computer.

Well, enough of that!  I really only need information on the saving issue.  If you must reply to my SQ rant, then I will probably read it while awaiting the KQ response.

Alright... The manuals are on the disc. They do not come packaged along with the disc. The disc contains them. You have to open the files. In response to KQ5. I got the same problem, and I cannot fix it. For me it isn't the end of the world. Sierra will probably release a patch for it someday... Anyway, to get the copy-protection things you need, just open up the disc on your computer (The disc folder) and you should be presented with a bunch of files. One of them is the manual. You can print the manuals once opened. I hope this works out for you!

Well, I don't work for VU but I'm guessing the game is trying to save to the CD rather than the hard disk. :P  If I were you, I'd contact their Tech Support and tell them about the bug. :)

Someone was supposed to have sent me KQ from Canada, but it never arrived.  I can't buy them on Amazon because they won't ship them here, so I may have to eBay them.  Blaaarg.

I have the 1997 KQ collection and I haven't had any trouble using the workarounds to get it to run on XP.  This sounds like it is basically the same collection where they tell you where to get stuff to do a workaround and how but all in PDF form and no paper manuals.

Im trying to play any of the KQ Collection Games, but when i click on them, i get kicked back to the Desktop.

I installed the latest Dosbox and KQ7 works, but the rest of them does nothing.

The Police Quest and Space Quest Collection all work fine.

I have the old dos collection and they all work fine in DosBox .63 (or something like that.) I never bought the new collection, though they should still work.

I could never get the old dos/win versions to work on XP, but I think it was just me not using dosbox properly. The XP collection mostly runs ok on my comp although KQ6 throws me out onto the desktop occasionally and I had the same problem saving in KQ5 although it did let me change directory and then saved no problem.

Not sure if this will help, but I read on wiki that they run on dosbox 63-65 but compatabilty for  KQ 1-6 was broken under DosBox 7.0.

They ran pretty well for me in 0.72. The only problems were speech and the KQ6 intro movie.

My friend tried installing the games, and he got kicked back to the desktop on every game he clicked on. He tried uninstalling the Dosbox he had installed on his comp prior to installing the compilations, and that did nothing. As far as I know, he still hasn't gotten them to work yet. VU should really release a patch for these things that fixes all of these problems. But that's just me, of course.
