Title: Top Three Favorite Adventures
Post by: PirateKingChris on April 03, 2007, 06:00:17 PM
...King's Quest games not included :P

Mine I think are :
1) Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (used to scare my pants off..its still creeepy to play...when I can find it...I think it's been missing at least 2 years)
2) The Curse of Monkey Island (I played it before MI1 and 2 and also adore the art style and atmosphere)
3) Grim Fandango (Most original game I've ever played)

EDIT: I guess I should have put this in the Adventure Game forum...Duh.  :!Oops:

Oooh, that's hard, to pick only three. But I'd think I'd go with those three, and than maybe Longest Journey if I had a fourth.

:iluvu:, adventure games! ;D

1. Laura bow II: the Dagger of Amon Ra
2. Myst
3. 5 Days a Stranger

Sadly, I haven't played that many apart from King's Quest. :-\ I've been dying to try out Monkey Island.

You REALLY need to play the first 3 Monkey Islands...You can skip the fourth though  ::)

Post by: tessspoon on April 04, 2007, 04:41:51 PM
Agreed. Those are classic. The first three anyway. I found the fourth one to be worth playing if you really like the series, but definitely not as good.

Agreed. I mostly dislike the plot of EMI and several of the puzzles STINK. Die Monkey Combat, Die.

I really liked the first Monkey Island but thought the sequels that I have played were not as good.

I'm with PK about MI, I played the third one before the first two as well and like the atmosphere and style of it. Plus it has Murray! :D He's probably my favorite sidekick character, along with Glotttis.

Hehe I love Murray and Glottis!

I have quotes from both of them on my adventure game quotes poster that I will eventually post a picture of whenever we get the digital camera working again and I get back to school, which should be Tuesday.

This is kinda sad, because I love Adventure Games, but sadly I haven't played many of them other than Kings Quest. So I really only have two.

1. Quest for Glory 4 Shadows of Darkness.
and
2. Quest for Glory 5 Dragon Fire.

EDIT: Just remembered one of other games I played, its called Torens Passage it was pretty fun. Good story, interesting characters and cool puzzles. So I guess thats my third favorite

Before I forget, anyone who hasn't played Conquest of the Longbow(the Sierra Robin Hood adventure) look it up NOW....I know many people here will love it! I know I do:)

Yeah, that game was great. I was horrible at it, but it was fun nonetheless. I really loved dressing up as a monk. XD

Wow, no offense, but how many adventures have you played? Escape from Monkey Island is in your top three?! For that matter, you like it more than 1 or 3?! That boggles my mind :P

Since I can only recall playing three, I can't say much. ;P
Title: Re: Top Three Favorite Adventures
Post by: AdvenAddict on May 29, 2007, 07:27:51 AM
I have played most of the Sierra, Westwood and LucasArts adventure games and I can honestly say that it is very difficult to select a 'top three'. Games like Codename Iceman, Leisure Suit Larry series, Police Quest series, Kings Quest series, Quest for Glory series, The Dig, Full Throttle, Goblins, Kyrandia series etc. were all amazing in their own way.

Maybe due to growing up with adventure games (and playing them when they were first released), I still hold them in high regard, even when compared with adventures games such as Baldur's Gate, Fallout etc.

The text parser games, IMO more difficult than the icon driven games, were a great challenge for me at that stage.

Most enjoyed (and fondly remembered):
Quest for Glory 1 (played the CGA, EGA version many years ago on a 80286 and had some of my best memories with this game). I had no clue what to do at first, but figuring this game out was very rewarding at that stage.

Monkey Island 1 (Again played on the 80286, but with a LucasArts icon interface (not text parser as used by Sierra at that stage))

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (It had it all)

Best Adventure Games:
Quest for Glory IV
Day of the Tentacle
Monkey Island III

Best series must be Quest for Glory!!! Awaiting QFG2 remake to play whole series again. :)

I agree, I love lot's of games, so it's actually hard to say three are the best.

Fallout and Baldur's Gate aren't adventures, by the way. :P
Title: Re: Top Three Favorite Adventures
Post by: AdvenAddict on May 30, 2007, 12:52:01 AM
I do agree with your assessment, PirateKingChris, on Baldur's Gate and Fallout. They are RPGs, but do contain some of the elements we all love in adventure games. For example the Quest for glory type character stat systems, the quests, the interaction with other characters (including dialog etc.), etc.

If I can recall Quest for glory is the only true adventure game series using the RPG type character stat system. Can Quest for Glory then be also classified as a RPG?
Title: Re: Top Three Favorite Adventures
Post by: PirateKingChris on May 30, 2007, 06:16:04 PM
I would call Quest for Glory an adventure with RPG elements and Baldur's Gate an RPG with adventures elements. I haven't actually PLAYED Fallout, but I always assumed it was alot more RPG.

I havent played any of the monkey island games or space quests...I have only played a few but my favorites of the ones I have played are

Kings quest
Day of the tentacle
Sam and max hit the road
Title: Re: Top Three Favorite Adventures

Excluding King's Quest games, I would say:

Curse of Monkey Island
Toonstruck
Sam and Max Hit the Road

Although I'm yet to complete the third on my list.  It's tough because King's Quest is my main adventure game series alongside Monkey Island!

There's many I've grown to love but for now top three are.
1. Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
2. Torrin's Passage
3. Myst

Some others I'll mention because I can't help it are:

Ripley's Believe it or Not:The Riddle of Master Lu
The was a great game that I don't think many people have played.

Mixed up Mother Goose Deluxe
I have great memories of mocking the game. The kid look like that had were doing the bathroom dance if you got them just right.

The Longest Journey
It was great even though I played Dreamfall first.

Robin Hood: The Conquests of the Longbow
I loved this game so much when I was younger

Sorry about the rant I couldn't help adding just a few more.
In my mind there aren't just three I love a lot of them.

Besides KQVI? :P

Quest for Glory II

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father

Veil of Darkness (not the best game around but I really enjoyed the plot)

Iv got to say that i'm quite suprised that no-one has mentioned Simon The Sorcerer!!! Iv played 1, 2 and 3D, and although 3d was a bit...shockingly bad, Simon the Sorcerer 2 (The Lion, The Wizard and the Wardrobe), with its evil and sometimes quite innuendo-filled commentary is amazing and is definatly in my personal top 3.

My top three has to be...

1. Curse of Monkey Island
2. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
3. Simon the Sorcerer 2: The Lion, The Wizard and the Wardrobe

Followed up closely in my joint number 4 slot by Simon the Sorcerer 1, Secret of Monkey Island and Torins Passage.

I really enjoy Torin's Passage. I was just introduced to it recently, and am in the middle of playing it for the first time. It's a great game, and it's too bad that Al Lowe never had the opportunity to make it into a series like he planned.

Including KQ games, I'd have to say my top 3 would be
1) King's Quest V
2) King's Quest VI
3) the white chamber

Without KQ I'd say:
1)the white chamber
2)Mind's Eye
3) ... OH MY GOODNESS! I can't think of anything. I would probably put something like Syberia or Longest Journey up at number 1, but I haven't played them yet.

I guess I am going to have to look into some of those games.  I was a sierra junkie (sq, kq, pq, qfg, lsl...etc.)  If it wasn't one of the sierra titles, I don't think I played it.  It has been a long time too.  I'll chewc kout a bunch of the other mentioned games and get back to on my top three.  If I had to go with what I have now, I would have to pick (based on 15 year or more memory on how much I enjoyed the games)

1.  KQ3
2.  PQ2
3.  Hero's Quest (later renamed QFG)

Uhh well the only adventure games I really played were KQ games.  I've played Myst and tried Riven, but the little communication drove me nuts.

My other favorite game is Return to Zork, hard as heck and it gave me nighmares since I was so young, but maaaan that was good gaming.

After King's Quest 6 these are in my experience the best.
1.The Dig... one of the greatest storylines, i mean who can beat a game idea by Stephen Spielberg, with dialouge by Orson Scott Card (Not counting Roberta Williams)
2.Conquests of the longbow
3.Monkey Island 1

2. Full Throttle
3. Gabriel Knight II: Beast Within

Granted it's still well written, but I didn't like Grabriel Knight II being FMV :P Not that I have anything against FMV, it's just that the Tex Murphy games did it way better. I don't think Sierra used the technology well enough, in any of their FMV games. Of course people are welcome to like it, just stating my opinion on it...

I loved it for the story, but I didn't much care for the FMV either; I think they would have done better with a more classic adventure interface.

Did anyone ever play 11th Hour?

7th guest :D Superawesome. We also used to have a game called Malcolm or something, you were some kind of jester and when you did stuff wrong you got locked up in prison. The first prison was easy to escape (had something to do with a pair of scissors), but I never could get out of the second one (where you constantly had to carry boulders up a hill I think). Also, there was a waterfall, and you could jump from one side to the other and float with your umbrella. I loved that game (anyone knows the title?? :D).

You may be thinking about The Legend of Kyrandia series. I really enjoyed the first 2, but haven't gotten a chance to play the 3rd one at all. Has anyone played it? Is it worth picking up?

I was to young for 7th guest, gabriel knight, and another one I remember called phantasmagoria...but my dad and brother played them all the time so i remember parts of them - but they scared the poo out of me just watching them lol.

I tried the myst when I was younger but I found it kind of boring.

Im more into the fantasy stuff and out of the ordinary. I still have to play Monkey Island - which one is the first one? Is there a special version I need to buy for XP or is it downloadable or what?

If any of you havent played sam and max hit the road or day of the tentacle - you should. Those are awesome! Day of the Tentacle is the 2nd one to Maniac Mansion - but I could never get into that one as much.

Other than KQ I guess my favourites are
1.Legend of Kyrandia Triology
2.Monkey Island (first three, I've never played the fourth)
3. The Longest Journey

Malcolms Revenge is different from the other two Kyrandia games but I personally liked it. The game-play is very non linear (there are six different ways to finish the first part, and three paths to complete it). Some puzzles (one in particular)can be annoying but generally it's a fun game.

I'm just starting to play the Laura Bow games now,
