Title: Request: Skip the arcade sequence...
Post by: jobreton on February 20, 2011, 07:24:18 PM
As a pure adventure gamer, I'm not a arcade player (i'm sure that i'm not alone). I hope to see a patch to skip the arcade sequence in the future (or in the episode 3), because it's too much frustrating and give nothing at all.

I don't think a patch to skip the arcade sequence will ever come from Phoenix Online. Frankly, I like the arcade sequence in that it gives us something new and refreshing. As an employee of POStudios (I suppose "volunteer" would be the more correct term, as I don't get paid, nor does anyone else on the team), I can tell you that there are currently no plans for a patch of this kind. Whether or not this will remain true in the coming months I couldn't tell you. The only way a patch could possibly get made is if there is enough support. But we'd need to see it. I'm afraid that one post isn't going to cut it. Alternatively, you could just watch through the arcade sequence online to see what (very important) plot bits you'd be missing, and then obtain a save from someone that's just passed the arcade part. But then you lose the magic of actually playing the game. Yes, the arcade sequence can be tough. And I'm the first one to admit that I'm in a game for fun and not for a challenge. But for a genre that so rarely goes out it's established barriers, I'm very glad that we (Phoenix Online) did. As I've said, I actually like the arcade sequence. It brings something new to the table, and it's a singular sequence. It doesn't dominate the whole game, and it happens very close to the end, so you can still enjoy most of the game. If anything, the arcade sequence makes you more alert.

Im not sure if it this topic should all be in tags being that we are talking about a part of the game. anywhoo... I enjoyed the sequence. It caught me off-guard and made it a little bit more of a challenge. I cant say i struggled with it, if anything i was abusing the heck out of it, with dieing, crashing the game,re-opening the game, saving after every fall... it was fun. I was quick to catch on that you had to put the mouse on either side of the screen to make graham "dodge". it was a challenge, but i had more fun with it then not. Was defiantly something new. Along with Chessboard challenge. I loved the *fillwords* out of it.

I don't mind the actual level because I love arcade bits but I'm sad because it whenever I go into the arcade part it freezes up and crashes on me. I got to play through it only once before it started doing this and that first time the monsters caught me. I was hoping maybe to find out if I did something wrong since I didn't notice anyone else having that problem.

Arcade sequences are true to the sierra style.  In early KQ games you had to navigate a crazy maze or beanstalk without dying.  Every SQ game has arecade sequences.  Having them makes it true to the genre and does not go against it.  The option to skip the sequences has also been present in other games so it wouldn't be too bad to allow the user to skip them.

The climax of KQVI could be regarded as an arcade sequence, since it involves correctly timing and placing a click, though it is much shorter than TSL's protracted action sequence.
