Title: KQ Series
Post by: DancingMagicDance on April 16, 2004, 04:06:14 PM
Is it true that King's Quest was in it's day (and perhaps today) the greatest selling computer game (or game) series of all time?

Many games/series are hyped as the best selling ever...
I wonder what they base those declarations on ???

Maybe they use very specific categories. ;)
"King's Quest: the bestselling two-dimensional adventure of a king and his family during better days."

Maybe... except that they always called King's Quest three-dimensional  ;)

The actual title was '3-D Animated Adventure Game', for you folks' info.

And KQ certainly was the best selling game at the time; check the KQ4 Promotional movie (http://www.shaftnet.org/quest/KQ4Promo.avi) for example.

Nice try, Questie, but unlike me, Spikey is sane. A bit... OK, a lot obsessed with Sierra music, perhaps, but possessing a good grip on reality.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Welcome to the forum, Spikey!! ;D

Great! more sane people! The sane are by far the minority here... most of those who enter the forum  don't seem to keep their sanity for long, if they had it to begin with ;P

Thanks for posting the movie! I've never seen that one before :)
However, it only says KQ is the best selling graphic adventure, not the best selling game of all times :S

The King's Quest series has sold a total of over 3 million copies, and that was before the release of KQ:MoE. I don't know how high this puts the series on the list, but it is a sensational number. But of course a number distributed over a very long period of time. I'd guess that it's the last 3-4 games, especially KQVII, that makes up for the majority of those sales. It is also possible that sales of the various KQ collections were not included in this calculation. In any case, it was certainly Sierra's bestseller.
