Title: I noticed something about Shamir...
Post by: Hituro on March 02, 2011, 01:18:03 AM
What happened to his golden eye?  Remember in KQVI, that golden eye that would glint and was the only thing that gave him away when he was trying to get Alexander to walk into harms way?  What happened to his golden eye? >:P  I demand answers!

Alexander: Shamir Shamazl

Shamir: Yes master?

Alexander: That golden eye gives me the creeps.  It reminds me of when you worked for Alhazarad.  Can you change your eye color?

Shamir: Yes master!

I think if he could have changed its color... he would have when he changed form... perhaps he just stopped polishing it? :P *shrugs*

It was 'golden eyes', not a 'golden eye' both of his eyes twinkled. Granted often when we saw sprites trinkle we only saw a side view. But there are definitely places in the game where you can catch both eyes twinkle.

I'm honestly not sure if it was a conscious choice to not make his eyes twinkle, but I can imagine it would've invited more bugs in his model certainly. But moreover, in KQ6 the twinkling eyes were largely to entirely there as part of a clue to identify Shamir no matter his form, which isn't really necessary in our game since he isn't trying to hide from you.

I also like the James Bond answer ;)

As I recall the whole twinkling eyes was actually tied into the plot in KQ6. I might have eveen been mentioned as a trait of genies in general, in the Guidebook.

The Oracle's eyes glowed/flashed in KQ6 as well, and apparently left out of TSL for technical reasons?

Sorry for that, I guess both his eyes were gold :)

But still... I don't understand how having the color of the mapping on Shamir's eyes would cause issues with his model.  They don't need to twinkle, just make his eyes a gold color :p

I don't see why - they don't seem to have any trouble making Shadrack's eyes glow.

Yeah, and the bird's eyes have cool glowing trail effect too.

I'm under the impression that the Guidebook said that djinn were known for emulating the character of their masters. Or maybe that's just traditional myth. Or maybe I'm making that up. Anyhow, not only were the gold eyes a clue to identify him as dangerous, but I assumed they were a reflection of Alhazred's greed.

I didn't see any problem with the Oracles eyes. Maybe she's just getting old.  :P

Oracles in myth can tend to be blind.

I don't know if the Guidebook mentions that, but Jollo mentions it in the game in one of the conversations you have with him in the bookstore.

Oh, yes, I assumed she was blind. I just meant that her eyes don't glow anymore because she's old.

Technically Shamir's eyes do seem to be gold in TSL.  Actually they sometimes seem green, but they're definitely gold.  They just don't sparkle.  And really, I think that's fine.  I think Shamir's sparkle in KQ6 was just to make sure you noticed since the VGA characters didn't have much of a face so it was tough to identify eye color.  I think it can be argued that Shamir never actually had sparkly eyes, just that they were gold.

Though if you really want to get picky about it, in the closeups, it looks like Shamir's eyes are all gold, as in no whites, irises, or pupils.  He clearly just has gold irises in TSL.  But like I said, that's only if you want to get really picky.

Actually Shamir's sparkly eyes are mentioned in KQ6 plot. The narrator comments on it a few times when you look at his disguises. You even see it occur during close up scenes, such as when you use the mirror of Truth during the short path.

So it was definitely more than jus trying to make him noticeable. The developers put alot more thought into than you suggest

Ya the Guidebook does mention genies and their personalities.
QuoteA genie is also bound to its master in other ways. It is said that a genie is like a mirror; it only reflects its master`s will. If a master is evil minded and cruel, the genie will be also. If a master is generous and kind, so will be the genie.
