Title: eventual Mac port?
Post by: Lambonius on March 19, 2011, 03:42:34 PM
Any plans on putting together a proper Wine-wrapped Mac port once you finish the remaining episodes?  I guarantee you will attract players that wouldn't have been able to play the game otherwise.  Just curious.  I myself am getting a little sick of having to constantly rejigger Wine to try and get these episodes up and running (I am as yet unsuccessful running episode 3...though admittedly I gave up messing with it pretty quickly.)  :)

We are working on it, yes. No dates for when it'll be complete yet, though.

Cool.  Good to know.  I'll definitely be downloading it when it becomes available.  Thanks.  :)

You could volunteer your time to POStudios so they can release it, meeting all legal requirements (I expect). ;)

I think I can say this... I've been using the mac build for some time now. In fact, we're not wine-wrapping it! We're going mac-native! There are some bugs that need to get resolved before we can release the first three episodes, but it is coming along. We'll give you all a status update when we have one. But don't worry; a mac native port is most definitely in the works.

Currently there are no plans for a linux native version. If I had Linux, I'd test it out on the platform. I know it's open source, and I've been thinking about getting Linux someday, but that day hasn't come yet. I do believe that both Mac and Linux are viable gaming platforms, so perhaps someday we'll do a linux native version. Just, not at the moment. The mac version is a ways off anyway. I'm waiting for some critical bugs to be fixed before I can even progress further in episode 3, let alone start testing episode 4.

I'm perfectly happy using wine for now, but a native port would be great for the progression of gaming on linux and such.

I'll look into it; right now we're definitely focusing on just PC and Mac, but I wouldn't entirely rule out a linux native version. If it does happen, it'll be down the line sometime. I can't tell you when because honestly I don't know when, or even if, it'll ever happen.

I'll be very excited for the Mac port, the PC I've been using is old and a pain in the butt! :P

for now, have you gotten it to work in wine?  I know its kindof a pain but it works really well.

I really haven't tried. It's a tech thing I'm not good at it, and it's not like I can't run it otherwise. So I play it on the old PC and wait for a Mac port. :P

I can confirm that the game runs well in wine, so that's a good option if you want to play immediately. We're still going mac-native though. I'll be sure to keep everyone informed on the progress of the port though.

it runs great in wine.  i have never played it otherwise, but as far as i can tell everything works perfectly (except for medium and large fonts, but that doesn't really matter)

a native port would be good though.  i always encourage non-windows versions. :P

This is excellent news! I will definitely have to replay it on the mac native. My solution for playing on the mac worked, but i had to restart every hour or so. The wine version will be a better way to go ...but If anyone has a mac and doesn't want to wait, and you can get your hands on an old copy of windows xp, you can set up a VM with Oracle's VirtualBox software. I played the whole thing in a VM on my mac. I think the crashes i experienced were related to the defects reported elsewhere. One word of caution..while playing the game in the VM, best not to have any other apps running in the background.

thanks again for putting together an awesome game.

excuse the typo. i meant to say the native version (typo was wine) would be the better way to go when it arrives. I was trying to convey my experience with vbox, as a viable alternative.

yeah.  h ave you tried it with wine though?  it sounds like,  from your experience with vbox, that it is way better.  it works almost perfectly in wine.
