Title: Game of Thrones
Post by: KatieHal on April 17, 2011, 09:11:50 PM
I'm a huge fan of the books, and just saw the premiere episode of the new HBO series. I'm sure there must be more like me on this forum!

I'm quite pleased with the casting and settings so far, everything looks exactly the way I imagined, really! I can't wait to see more of the season and I do hope we get to see the whole series play out on HBO. Of course, that would also keep Martin writing and writing faster than he's been known to, which wouldn't be a bad thing at all either. :P

ALSO! Please use your spoiler cuts, folks! I'm sure some people who've seen the show haven't read the books, or some people haven't yet read all the books, and there are many, many, many twists to come.

Now, let's dicuss! Winter is coming. :)

I've been meaning to check this series out; I've had my eye on it for a while. Care to give a non-spoilery plot summary?

I couldn't possibly give you a summary without spoilers, but I can give you the general set-up:

In the kingdom of Westeros, noble families are constantly vying for power and for the throne--including the scheming Lannisters, the stoic Starks, and the ambitious exiled children of the former ruling family, the Targaryens. The previous generation saw a war that overturned 9and killed most of) the Targaryen's mad dynasty, and though the kingdom would seem stable, there are far more plots, schemes, secrets and betrayals going on than you can imagine.

And meanwhile, something is stirring on the other side of the immense man-made ice Wall in the North...

I tried to read the book.  Twice.  Never made it past page 30.

Of course, there are books where it's a struggle for me to get through the first 50 pages or so, and then they become totally awesome (I had to read over 100 pages of Mysteries of Udolpho before it became a page-turner, but most people have that issue when they read Mysteries of Udolpho).

I didn't realize this series was based on books.  I went ahead and picked up the first one at the library yesterday, though I have no actual real hope that I'll have time to read it.  But I can look at the cover a bunch.

I actually did get to read 12 pages last night when my internet was down and the kids were in the bath.

Well, at that rate, you'll be able to finish the first 4 books in...2020, maybe!

I should pick up the books, as I won't be able to watch the series until it comes out on DVD. :)

(Although I saw a preview online and it looks AMAZING!)

I alway knew fantasy television is the cause of violence in society :
Cops: Man Battered Kin During Argument Over HBO's "Game Of Thrones" (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/buster/domestic-abuse/man-battered-kin-over-hbos-game-thrones-780215)

That's why I prefer reality-TV.

This is my favorite show on HBO since Carnivale!  Ayra is cute!  Never read the books, kind of don't want the show spoiled but might read along with the show.
