Hmm.

Aliens: I think these exist, as well. I find it kind of hard to believe that we're the *only* "fully intelligent" life forms in the entire universe!

But as for the "visitations" aspect and all that... jury's still out on whether I believe aliens have ever come to our planet and stuff. If there are aliens out there, I think it's sadly possible we may never meet them, due to various limitations.

Ghosts: I'm not certain I believe in the actual spirit idea of ghosts. If there is an afterlife, I don't really believe it's the Christian concept of afterlife, where you go with an intact soul with your personality and everything, I feel it's likely something less... I dunno, less structured, solid? I think it's more of a "spectral energy" sort of thing... like just your pure essence continues to exist, it just doesn't necessarily have any real "form".

I think that if "ghosts" as traditionally described do exist, they might be a sort of "imprint" sort of thing... kind of like a person or event leaving a photo on the film of reality. I'm not sure I believe it's the actual dead person(s) in any way.

Mythical creatures: Apologies, but I think that things like dragons, fairies, giants, vampires, unicorns, etc. are simply perceptions of real creatures that have become exaggerrated over the centuries. Any possible creatures that inspired the ideas might still be a spectacle to behold, but I don't think they're really "magical" or anything, per se.

Magic, ESP, telepathy, etc.: I think that things like magic and "mental arts" and stuff like that might exist. There are many, many ways of manipulating the universe that we haven't come close to scientifically documenting yet... I don't find it unreasonable to think that some of those ways might involve humans being able to produce effects that at first glance seem "supernatural".

I guess you could boil my beliefs down to... I believe that "supernatural" things may very well exist. (Certainly I've seen many strange things I can't explain right off!)

However, I think those supernatural things are simply the result of rules of the universe that we haven't discovered yet. I think that supernatural things exist *inside* an undiscovered subset of reality, not *outside* reality altogether, for lack of a better way to put it at the moment.

Peace & Luv, Liz

yeh, coz dont we only use like 9% of our brains? so who knows what we can unleash. maybe thats why psychics etc hav that power that the rest of us just dont understand![/glow]

I wanna say it might even be less than 2% of our brains that we fully use. Anyone else ever see the movie "Phenomenon" with John Travolta? That movie kind of explored what might happen and what we might be capable of if we were using *more* or even *all* of our brains.

I also think such mental powers might be possible, if we knew how to tap into them. Who knows what we could do with that other 90+% of our brains if we could?

Aliens... granted we've got no solid proof of anyone else out there now, but IIRC, haven't they recently found fossils of some kind on Mars? Which (if I'm right) proves that life *can* exist on other planets. Which gives that much more support to the idea that it *does*. Of course, this is probably slightly influenced by the fact I saw "Contact" this morning. ;)

Ghosts. I don't know. I've been in places that very much creeped me out for no explainable reason, a feeling echoed by others I was with. In the kind of solid, viewable forms, I don't think so; I know I've never seen one. But in the sense of being invisible, or maybe just a kind of dwelling of a spirit or imprinting an emotion on a place? I think that can happen.

Well, those fossils on Mars prove that carbon-based life can exist elsewhere.
There may be things that are biologically possible where life exists but does not consist of carbon.
(Ie: X-Files, finding Sulphur based plants)

As for all sorts of other things:
Ghosts/Paranormal:  Bollocks, even if I am scared of the dark. :D
Aliens: Yep.  Do I think they've ever visited Earth. Nope.
Supernatural Powers: Sort of.  As humans evolve, I believe we will be able to do more with our minds and bodies. (ie: athletes run faster, jump higher, etc.)  Manipulate the world around you without touching (telekinesis) Err...no.  Telepathy...yeah, possible.

I believe in "others" but prefer to not call them aliens.  If you think about it and there is other life out there, we are all just as "alien" as those we label as such.  One funny thing I like to think about in the whole scheme of life and a "higher being" is that there is one big board game each with a different title. Ours just happens to be called Earth.  I think there is someting greater that gets a kick out of looking down at us and watching us run through daily activities.  One example . . .when someone is walking  . . . say on a college campus . . . I think that is a dice rolled or a card drawn like in monopoly or something.  I would like to think that faeries are genuine, but I have no proof they do.  They are just really pretty!! As far as ghosts . . . I think there are spirits in all forms, shapes, sizes, and attitudes. How about them apples??? ;P

I believe in ghosts.  Had a few encounters that I don't think can otherwise be explained.  I'll go into details another time, when I'm not about to eat dinner (because I'll get interrupted in the middle of one of the stories here and forget where I was or something).

I believe in aliens, just because its depressing to think humans are the only sentient beings in the WHOLE universe.

As far as legends go, I believe in some.  I believe in the Jersey Devil, as I know someone who's seen it and also, far too many sightings not to (in my opinion).  I also believe in yetis (Bigfoot, Sasquatch, etc).  I mean, there's photographs of them from like...around the time people started taking pictures that weren't posed, so long before people could really edit them.  But others, I'm not sure about.  The Loch Ness Monster has like...four different appearances, for example.  But some pieces of evidence for it are fairly convincing.  So I really don't know.

As far as myths go...the only ones I really think I could put any stock in are dragons and phoenixes, and only because so many cultures shared beliefs in those.

ESP and things like that, I definitely believe in!!  It's my optimism though, really.  I like to think there's a lot of potential in the human mind....so...I think that's where it is.  Hidden abilities, like that. :)

Now, where's that Jeysie were you need her? I had to search for this link she posted about the subject a while back:

http://www.snopes.com/science/stats/10percnt.htm

I don't believe in any of those things myself. Ghosts, afterlife, mythical creatures, magic and psychic abilities - as much as I enjoy stories & movies about them, I just don't believe they exist IRL.

As for aliens, I do believe they exist, that is, that life exist on other planets beside Earth. There are 1000's of billions of plantes in the universe, odds are life have evolved in more than just one of them ;)
As for aliens visiting Earth and conspiracy theorys regarding them - That's another thing I enjoy watching on screen, without believing it actually happens. Even if some advanced alien race could cross the vast reaches of space and come to earth, I hardly think they'll make such an effort just so they can draw some crop circles, preform anal probings and enjoy a good cattle mutilation :P

Q and all others who had a paranormal experience/encounter - excuse me if I don't take your testimony as proof positive. Such fantastic claims should be supported by more than someone else's say so. I might believe these things exist if something like that happened to me personally... strange that it never did  ::)

If you want to get technical, we use *all* of our brains at some point, we just don't use all of it at the same time. How much of your brain you use at a given time depends on what you're doing. (I.E., each part of the brain is best suited to a given set of activities, so how much you're using depends on what activities your task is made up of. Or something like that.)

I'm officially a smart-ass again. Whee. :P

Of course, just because every part of the brain gets used at some point, doesn't necessarily mean that we know what every part does. ;)

right lets get back on topic  :)

so do we think that mythical cretaures such as loch ness monster, unicorns, werewolves and giant squid are true or not?

im thinking giant squid like in the picture below (in the second pic) were misinterpreted many years ago by fisherman, because lets face it if u were a sailor in ur little boat and then all of a sudden a big slimey thing with loads of arms was found in the water (and perhaps at the time u had a few glasses of good ol' *alchy-hol*) then u may make up stories to make ur journey more interesting, or convince others not to go into the water so u got more fish for ur business (ok i will stop with the rambling about fish)
i think we havnt yet discovered everything on our planet, on land or in sea, think about the depths of some waters, they are so dark who knows what could live down there! most things are possible!
ok with tales handed down through generations and accross countries, you can put some myths down to misinterpretaion, and some for just a good story, but who knows what may hav existed, or may still exist!
Contempory evidence- havnt they found some sort of microscopic organisms that can live in conditions that they thought not to be possible in america? or something like that anyway-but it shows we are still finding new things about out planet and some things go against science and nature...we may one day find something bigger than a group of microbes...something the size of godzilla  ;P  :suffer:

deep kimmie rant over, this doesnt happen often and its probably all confused but i dont care  ;P

You're right, no one really knows what creatures exist in the deepest depths of the oceans... but they're probably not much bigger than microorganisms because of the lack of sunlight, so no "huge monsters of the deep" :-\ Of course, anything they might find down there should be more "undiscovered" than "unexplained" ;)

I believe in Santa Claus... or at least the concept that comes with the image that is presented in generally accepted society; a 'giver' and a 'saint' - ignoring religious tie-ins in respect to say, I believe in the standards of equality that exist...  it is unfortunate that those standards of giving and goodwill disappear so quickly when the Christmas season is over... [I refuse to call it X-mas... no offense meant to anyone reading...]

Sentient life on other planets:  I believe this to exist...  the platypus had to come from somewhere, right?  :D

I belive in the power of my bi.tchyness! but dont worry dew you didnt piss me off neither stress me, I just dont want religion issues going on around here, that's all, there's gotta be something else you believe in?

I mean angels and demons arent just a religious subject, they are mythology related anyways, you could always go sideways. In chinese belief they used to be truly commited to consider dragons somehow powerful "demons" to believe or such? I dont believe in dragons but whoever who is into mythology (of ANY kind, which is my point) can say how much they believe that waaay back there wasn an Atlantis or Dragons, or Zeus... or whatever.

Whoever who believes in God or Satan or Lolitas be my guest! whoever can believe what they want in religious terms, just keep it to yourself, thats all. I dont want this thread locked up either.

I have a few reasons for believing in aliens, but I cannot put all of them because of some rules that were put down earlier.  I don't see how the giant face got on Mars without a little extraterrestrial help.
I also find Greek and Roman mythology fascinating.

We have rules about aliens? :S

I thought that giant face on Mars was just a trick of the light... IIRC, other pics of it from different angles/times showed it didn't look like a face at all :-\

I just realised I never really posted in this thread!  :o  ;-D

Well, being someone that believes in science, facts, principles and logic, I don't believe in a lot of supernatural things, since you can usually find an explanation for them. :P  But as for unexplained things, I do think there is an answer to them, but we just haven't discovered it yet.  Without bringing religion into this, I'll just say I believe most answers (i.e. Why are we here?,  Are we alone in this universe?, etc) will be made clear when you die; but for the rest of us still living, we can only really speculate. 8)

I like science too but feel that it will always be lacking without having some kind of supernatural force to help back it up and motivate you to seize the day -- carpe diem

One of the main unexplained thing I believe is about telekenisis and the power of the miiiinnnd (yeah I know we'e already had the whole 10% convo in this thread :P).

I prefer to motivate myself, actually. ;)

I'm with Yonkey in the part that I think that everything that's currently unexplained will be explained eventually, using science and human ingenuity.

Even some of the things we can explain today are still awe-inspiring and amazing, so I don't feel it any less magical and intriguing to think of all things as being natural instead of supernatural.

I'm not too sure of that myself. What if some things can't be explained in a way the human mind can comprehend? we live in our minuscule corner of the universe, naming the physical forces and objects around us, studying and putting into formulas the way our world behaves, making up theories of how we came to be here and thinking that someday we'll have everything figured out.
But what if we're simply CAN'T figure it out? What if we can't precive the begining and cause of the universe the same way we can't precive anything past the 4th dimension? what if the dimensions & time themselves are only a way for us to precive very different things we can't comprehend, the same way an ant can't comprehend what a human is, even when it's walking on one?

Sure, we think to ourselves, we're much more evolved than the ant. We can think and imagine things beyond what we can see, hear and feel with our limited senses, and we can understand anything if you put it in small enough words. But what if it can't be put into small enough words? what if the human mind itself is inherently incapable of conceiving the true nature of the universe? what if it's beyond our notions of thought, time, space, dimensions, logic, cause & effect etc., the same way music, for instance, is beyond the mind the ant?

I really wonder about that sometimes :-X

(shrug) Well, look at it this way, if you like... regardless if we can understand it or not, I feel there's a "natural" explanation for everything. I'd like to think we are (or will be) smart enough to figure it all out one day, but even if we're not, I don't think there's anything stereotypically mystical/magical about the universe.

I think people are generally dumb.  Science will solve puzzles but there will always be more things to solve because new puzzles will come up and a supernatural force or being is the only way to explain everything no matter what you think, in my humble and small opinion.  :>

I always considered that a cop-out. :P Why not just be satisfied with attempting to study and explain the universe and accept that in this case it's the journey and the application of the journey's experience that matters and not the "final" goal, instead of just giving up and saying "Well, we can't explain it right now, so it's a supernatural phenomena, end of story."?

Plus, if *we* can't explain something, it doesn't make it supernatural. Too complicated for humans to understand, perhaps, but not supernatural.

I believe that eventually we will find the answers.  Less than 2000 years ago, no human understood 2 dimensions, let alone 4.  And nowadays, you learn about 3 dimensions in Grade 3 (that is, when children are able to understand the concept of conservation & volume).

There is no single human on this earth that knows and understands every single principles, theory or concept because of the sheer vast amount of information.  However, there is a medium in which humans can access this kind knowledge at any point in time: the Internet.  8)

So yeah, humans do have a limited amount of mind capacity, and I'm sure there are things in this world that no one understands right now, but I feel eventually someone will and eventually it will be taught to our children by an elementary or high school teacher.  ::)  Or more likely, it will be available from a few keystrokes at Google or its successor.  XD

Actually you can.  If you draw a circle now, then draw the exact same circle in an hour, it exists both in the "present" and the past.  But, since time is always increasing and never stops, it's impossible for something to exist in exactly one point in time.

they don't have to, they were smart enough to understand that if they would meet each other at a certain spot (ie. location = 3 dimensions) they wouldn't see each other unless they are there at the same time (4th dimension).

2000 years ago they already had hours and so (iirc), so they ahd a pwetty good deffinition of time i should say

Time and dimensions are very natural concepts - people could probably understand them even before they began counting/drawing them. The first humans capable of thought could probably understand the difference between "here" and "there" (dimension), and "now" and "later" (time) ;)

Quote from: racx_00 on June 19, 2004, 12:43:45 PM

You can't draw the 4th dimension on paper, but you could represent it by a series of graphs (creating an animation).
And as any Linear Algebra studant know, there is an infinite number of dimensions, but in our world we only use 4 of them, and only draw 3 ;)

I'm almost always honest... even when I probably shouldn't be. :P

Lies have their place... but only when the truth would be more harmful than the lie (which IMHO is very seldom). Even then, I'd be more likely to just omit part of the truth, than I would to outright lie.

/me is reminded of the movie "Liar, Liar (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119528/)".

Being a really truthful person, I find it really hard to lie.  Of course, I can do it, but depending on how elaborate it is, the sick feeling in my stomach gets worse and worse. :S

Omission of information is fine, but when ya start misleading people by conjuring up stories and outright contradictions to the truth... that's when it starts getting out of hand.   ::)

Heh, I've been keeping a secret from my family for a few months and revealed it a couple weeks ago.  It was seriously such a relief to stop lying to em.  The sad part is I still have to keep up this lie and many others to other people, until the time is right.  Kinda hard to explain really, but it's all for the best.

I so wonder how people can be patholigical liars... do they have no conscience?  :o

I try not to lie, thats all i can. i never lie intentionally but if i think something is the ruth and i say it and it turned out not then what i said earlier was a lie... right?

...still not intentionally. lol, but i rather be a nice honest person then an 'a******'. even if the truth is ugly there is no need for me to act like an 'a******'. but i agree it would be better to be honest and an 'a******' then to be sweet and lie.

supposing one of your best friends has been playing round trying to get a prom dress.
you go round to her house and she says look at this...and she puts on this stunning dress and lets just say it doesnt look as stunning as you thought it would be.
you know that rule where u buy a size bigger so it doesnt show every lump and bump...she hasnt. she is a skinny moo without any flab, but the dress is too tight.

would u tell her the truth and make her depressed coz she hasnt got time to get another dress or hold you smile and say its stunning!?!

Personally, I likely would have said something like "I love the dress, but you probably should get it in a size up." If she didn't have time to, I'd probably warn her that it looked too tight. My reasoning is, not everyone at the dance is going to be a nice person, and if I look crappy in something I'd rather hear about it from a friend who will be nice, than an "enemy" who will be a jerk. :P

I'm not against lying in some cases, especially when it's about trivial matters where the truth would be more harmful - if that girl really looks awful in that dress I'd tell her that, but if it's just a little thing and she can't help it anyways, I'll keep it to myself.

The same thing goes for lying when it comes to protecting your privacy. Say someone asks you about something you'd rather not tell, but you can't avoid answering them altogether since that would give the wrong (or right) impression. So it's ok to say stuff like "that's not prozac I'm taking, those are vitamin pills" or "I'm using those condoms for balloons" even if it's a lie. It doesn't hurt anyone and it's none of their business anyway :P

However, I'm definately against lying when it's meant to decieve/mislead and hurt other people for your own pleasure... even if it's just as a joke >:(
I once told someone the song "Otherside" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers has a homosexual meaning (because of the line "take it on the other side") :P.
He got really upset when he found I made that up, though I thought he knew I was joking :-\

Im honest, there is nothing worse than someone who has no self confidence in what they do, not just to mention someone who has no certainty out of anything, who is vague, random, weak personality, it's just takes out a lot off your side.

I'm sorry I'm depressing you, Dew. :( I get Harrison depressed, too.

But it's hard to feel self-confident about stuff. I'm always doing stupid stuff and making mistakes, and it seems like every time I let myself think I'm good at something I either end up finding out I'm not, or I screw it up somehow. I'm always afraid of saying I'm good at things in interviews, because I worry that I'll end up not being able to follow through if I get the job.

Harrison hasn't been helping lately, either. Every time I screw up something or do badly at something (which is often :P ), he says it's because "I didn't try hard enough." He claims he's just trying to motivate me to do better, but since I'm already doing the best I can it just makes me feel worse about messing up. I guess I'm kind of flattered he tends to look at me through rose-colored glasses and think I'm better at stuff than I am (though he constantly claims he doesn't) but it's getting irritating. :P

I come off a lot more "eloquent" online than I do offline. Whenever I'm around someone I don't know offline, I tend to either be very reticent and quiet, or babble and stammer like an idiot. I have several people offline who have told me that when they first met me they thought I was nice but a few bricks shy of a load, and were (usually pleasantly) surprised to find out later I have some brains.

Unfortunately, Harrison's mom was one of those people... for the longest time she wondered why Harrison liked hanging out with me because she thought I was an airhead. :P Also, unfortunately, I have a suspicion that some of the people I've interviewed with over the years have thought similar things.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Why would you want to do what normal people do? I'm crap in real life small talk and stuff, I'd rather just have silence than babbeling crap but I've got to the point where I don't care and I often act like I'm *TOO* interested in what the person is saying so they think im taking the piss hehe. Ahhhh aint the little things of life great! ;)

Mostly because normal people have things like social lives, significant others, and decent jobs... while I spend my mornings as a file clerk in an office where nothing works, and then I spend the rest of the day at home alone on my computer. :P

And that's just social issues... if I got into biological issues we'd be here all day. ::)

Being unique is only a good thing if it's the sort of uniqueness that brings you happiness. In my case, I'd rather just be like everyone else, because my uniqueness has mostly made me miserable. ::) :P

Heck without my family and friends, I would be worse off and I do not dwell on the bad stuff.  Cancer twice -- survived with help of radiation and chemotherapy.  Learning Disabled -- overcome with hard work still shows up sometimes -- eg. reverse letters -- laugh it off  Vision Problems -- had vision therapy -- exercises to overcome it --- and I could go on and on but I do not let it get me down because I have faith and courage.  You must let your faith grow in you.  It does not matter to me what you place your faith in but I think it is important for the human pscyche to feel that there is a greater force than they are.  Be you a Hindu, Jew, Christian or something else it helps to define who you are.  Now I need you to stop feeling sorry for yourself and focus on the positive.  A good way to start is to mediate and thank this force for all the positive things in your life.  Just give it a try and get back to me.  It may take a few months but be patient and I am sure you will overcome.  Carpe Diem -- "Seize the Day"  LOL   !!!   ;D   ;-D  :>

I try to look on the positive, but there's a lot more negative. All I can ever see is all the problems I have that I can't fix... most of which I've had for years. :( And then there's the things I wish I could have that I can't get... and I don't mean material things you can buy, either. :P

Edit: And I wouldn't say I feel sorry for myself. All but 1 of the lousy things that have happened to me in my life are a result of my own screw-ups and failures, so I don't deserve pity from anyone, let alone myself. :P

If I'm going to feel sorry for someone, I'd rather it be for someone who has deserved and earned better things but didn't get them because life cut them raw deals out of their control.

Dew, I have to admit that, ironically enough, dealing with someone else's cancer is what caused me to lose my own faith and optimism (I'm honestly not sure I ever had any faith, but I did used to be a lot more optimistic). If you feel you want details, PM me.

Being a file clerk isn't bad... although with everyone always claiming I'm smart, I feel guilty about not doing "better", I guess. The place I work in is frustrating, though.

Being alone on my computer definitely sucks... I wish I had somewhere to go, or someone to hang out with.

Love: (Courtesy of Webster's Dictionary 1828)

. . . "In short, we love whatever gives us pleasure and delight, whether animal or intellectual; and if our hearts are right, we love God above all things, as the sum of all excellence and all the attributes which can communicate happiness to intelligent beings.

I think love is one of the greatest (in terms of power/strength, not always goodness, admittedly) human things. Not just romantic love, but all kinds of love. I think we are at our best when we do things out of love... love of a parent for their children, love of a person for their spouse or friend, love of honor and duty, love of humanity, etc. Not selfish love, love of oneself disguised as love for another thing (although a *healthy* amount of love for oneself is also important), but "pure" love.

Sometimes even "pure" love can lead people to go astray (the road to Hell is paved with good intentions, and all that), but I think when we can temper the motivation of love with the clear thought of logic and reason, we can do great things. When you strip away love, all you're left with is the simple drive to survive... what worth is that? You can call love a human invention to try to give more meaning to life than just that need to survive, but I'll still take it anyway. :)

Then there is also love and lust.  When some guy says that girl is hot and he loves her when he has not even met her then I would take that as he is in lust with this girl in his heart.  I see true and good love like this:
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.  Love never fails!
(Now this is the type of love that I hope that I can grasp and understand some day.  :> )

I found this in the 2004 Merriam-Webster Dictionary (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=love):

Love:

1 a (1) : strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties <maternal love for a child> (2) : attraction based on sexual desire : affection and tenderness felt by lovers (3) : affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests <love for his old schoolmates> b : an assurance of love <give her my love>

I agree with you on most parts, Dew.  But I think love can be envious--after all, if someone you were in love with were with someone else wouldn't you be at least *slightly* envious of who they were with?  Or at least wish you were in that someone else's place?

I agree... part of feeling "pure" love for someone is wanting them to be happy... even if it may mean making yourself a bit miserable.

And... is it as impossible to look past a face and feel love as well as lust for a pretty woman, as it is to look into a face and feel lust as well as love for an ugly/plain woman? (If that made any sense at all!)

For me, the two tend to be intertwined... if I love someone, I'm attracted to them... and while I can think many guys (or girls) are good-looking, I'm usually not truly attracted to someone unless I find them appealing as a person, too.

Lust isn't necessarily a bad thing... as long as you love the person, too.

Ahh, you foolish romantics, the lot of yous!!

Love is simply Evolution's way of making us preserve our species. Some of you might say "No Storm, that's SEX you're talking about" - that's also true, but since orgasms don't last 24/7, and raising a human child to sexual maturity takes about 16 years, Evolution had to find a way to make a couple stay together for longer than a one-night stand 8)

Love based on attraction is really hard to achieve, IMHO since most people are not the same inside as they are on the outside.  The other thing is I'm more likely to be attracted to a girl that's friendly, sweet and has a great sense of humour, than one that's drop-dead gorgeous.  It's like being in a huge candystore but picking something you know you  like, rather than something that just appears to be good.  ;D

Well, no wonder marriages turn out so lousy. One half is marrying people with pretty faces, so their sex life is great, but they don't get along with each other the rest of the time. The other half marries someone with a great personality, so they fit emotionally, but they can't stop staring (or worse!) at that hunk/babe walking past.

OK, so maybe I'm exaggerrating a bit lot. ;) Still, I always knew I was weird romantically... just didn't know how weird. ;P

Same here.  The only thing I've felt so far for beautiful women is lust; definitely not love.  :-\
Every female is beautiful, but not all of us see their beauty :-\

Sometimes it makes me wonder why humans think of themselves as so great.  I just hope that more people will respect the planet and other animals such as dolphins and horses that live here.  When I went to New Zealand last summer I saw a country that had their priorities with the environment straight.  I just hope that the United States is willing to learn from other countries too.  Anyway, back to the topic of what defines True Love.   ;D

Well, anytime you'd like one on completely requited love, lemme know... ;P And I will again state the fact that I completely despise alll generalizations. ;) (I.E "Why marriages turn out so lousy"...) I can see where some people get the idea that maybe they all really DO turn out that way, but the trouble with that is, all the sources I could cite are right here in the States. :-\ As bad as it sounds, too many of us see marriage more of a burden, or something that you're supposed to "get something out of". Personally, I've known people exactly like who you described Jeysie, completely stuck on looks "Omg, he/she is the one... He's/She's SO hot!", or on personality "Well, we have so much in common." But are either of those anymore than bad stereotypes, when you think about it, honestly? You pretty much said exactly what we're deluged with everyday: Dumb (but hot) guys and girls, or intellient, vibrant (but ugly) guys and girls. You can only pick one. ::) And maybe that's true, to a point, because we all do our best everyday to fill one of those society-assigned roles. (Again, more specifically THIS society, it seems) But then there's some of us who've been lucky enough to find a "better half" who actually has both. So, in conclusion, my point is, don't knock true love until you've tried it. You really will know it when you see it.And if you have to go outside this country to find it, then so be it. I'm in love with the most amazing woman in the world, and I think the real trick is it to not place yourself in the position of worrying about whether they live up to everyone else's standards/stereotypes or whatever, just as long as they're perfect for YOU. Personally, I can't wait to get married... I don't think it's going to be a burdenat all, but rather that which will lift the burden off of me that I've carried around so long by myself; this thing called life that we're not put on this earth to live by ourselves. So, there's my weekly rant. ;P And since I know you're reading this, and bugging me to finish typing already and come back and talk to you: I LOVE YOU SAY! :lovegoggles:

Woah. I sure missed this topic lol.

I don't think love is a thing that can ever be classified or described as it's different for every single person due to all teh different factors invlovled. As long as the "love" (wether some people see it as love or not) and feelings between two people makes them both happy then I'd call that true love.

I think like kimmie I've only experienced one sided love so far so I can't really comment on the "OMG warm fuzzlies" feelings and whatever.

Did someone say something about one-sided love?? Oh yeah, I've experienced that too...well, it was probably more along the lines of one-sided deep like!  Still, when rejection comes, talk about heart-ache.

Hey, Alex! You didn't ask about being virtual groomsman number 1

Well if there's any wedding bells tolling for those two I'd hopefully be hopping on a plane rather than switching on the webcam  ;D
Title: Re:What unexplained things do we believe in?

In my defense :P I was being kind of sarcastic/incredulous... as to ask "So, what, a beautiful woman can never be good enough *inside* for anything but feeling lust for her? Somehow I doubt that." So you're kinda preaching your "It's not always beautiful/shallow or ugly/meaningful" bit to the choir, as it were.

(Although I personally don't do anything to dispel the "plain/good personality" stereotype myself... and the "good personality" part is questionable!)

I guess I was pointing out that many people *do* seem to buy into all that and focus on one or the other.

I was also trying to point out that I've always felt that if you really love someone, they'll be the most beautiful/handsome person on the planet to you no matter what. (Although I have to admit to wishing I was "objectively" beautiful myself... I'd feel like I was making some guy settle for "runner-up". I guess I'm shallow when it comes to how I feel about my own looks. ;P )

Peace & Luv, Liz
