Title: Vote for Cognition on Steam Greenlight!
Post by: KatieHal on August 30, 2012, 12:04:14 PM
Steam's new submission process, Greenlight, has launched today, and we need your help to make sure Cognition becomes available on Steam! Head over to the Cognition page (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=92915746&searchtext=) on Greenlight and vote up Cognition!

How it works: Games submitted to Steam now get voted on by the community to see which games will be made available for sale on Steam. When a game gets enough votes, it's in!

So once again, we need your help to make it happen! All it takes is a click over to the Cognition  (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=92915746&searchtext=)page and a click on the Thumbs Up button to vote us up*! If you've got time for one more click, we'd love it if you could share the page on Facebook or Twitter, too, and help spread the word!

As always, your support is an essential part of our success, and we know we've got the greatest & most supportive fans out there who can make this happen. Thank you for everything and let's get this thing on Steam!  ;D

(*you do need a Steam account to be able to vote)

4,624 unique visitors! 424 favorites! 82 comments and just about every one of them positive!

....I really wish I knew what any of this was going to mean in regards to our positive ratings and relative chances of getting approved to be on Steam, but it's still pretty exciting in the meantime!

Threw my hat in the ring with a thumbs up vote!  Why does it still say 0% of needed votes tho?  Tons of favorites, tons of visitors - 0% of needed votes?!?!  THAT'S WRONG!  You should let 'em know, they're vote counter thingy is SERIOUSLY busted  ::)
Title: Re: Vote for Cognition on Steam Greenlight!

Steam wants to watch the Greenlight feature for a while to see how many votes things get and the median level of traffic to expect before they set "needed" votes. I'm pretty sure no one has any percentage points right now because it's out of infinity. XD

So don't worry. You're making a difference. Though like Katie said, if you want to share it on Facebook, you'll make a much bigger one. A lot of my friends who have never heard of Cognition before have said that it looks really cool and they're looking forward to it and one even reposted the link. This game speaks for itself, so getting the word out is very effective. XD

Thanks guys!

Yeah--I've only seen the percentage go up a tiny amount for a few games, which seems to relate about 1000 Favorites = 1%. Which is just a huge amount to expect for most indies, so I can't imagine that will stay the same for long.

We've got over 13K unique views, and over 1.1K favorites! Thanks everyone, and please keep up-voting and spreading the word!

And hopefully we'll eventually know exactly what we need to hit to get approved to be on Steam in all this. :)

I voted within minutes of our project going live on Greenlight, though I'm not sure if my vote actually counts any more now that Steam allows project creators to add co-contributors to admin the projects.

If you voted before you were added the data stays.

The tricky part is that you not only need a steam account, you also require to have purchased a game through steam to be able to vote (as in, to have your account be able to vote).
Title: Re: Vote for Cognition on Steam Greenlight!
Post by: KatieHal on November 02, 2012, 10:39:44 AM
Also a Day 1 voter, naturally.  ;D

Yeah, the part about your account has to have purchased a game is a bit annoying, but I can see why they did it (i.e., to prevent people making a ton of spam accounts to up their ranking).

It is crazy unfair to me, make it a time thing instead. There are so many free games with such large fan base (TF2, for example) that most of them just register for that one game alone, they get to be steam members for years yet their vote on greenlight doesn't count.

Team Fortress 2
Dungeon Defenders
Tribe
Spiral Knights

*end of rant*  :P

That would be a good way to do it--no idea how difficult that is to implement, but yeah, that would be much more fair! Plus there's something to be said for letting people who haven't yet bought something on Steam get the chance to say, "But I WOULD buy this".

Exactly my point. Because that's exactly how I got started on steam (with free games) :P

I wish I knew, but I have no idea. What I do know is that right now we're ranked in the 60s (the number moves around from 62-66 depending on the day).

Which, out of hundreds, is great--but not quite high enough to be greenlit just yet.

Ah, interesting. I was wondering how that Greenlight system worked. And how long can a game stay on Greenlight? Is your game allowed to stay there until it's Greenlit or is the clock ticking?

Until it's Greenlit or until we take it down (which we aren't about to do!).

Hey everyone, this Friday is the next announcement of greenlit games on Steam, and we'd love to be one of them! If you enjoyed the game, please vote us up on Steam and share the link!

(fixed link)

Also, Steam's Greenlight FAQ  (http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/about/?appid=765&section=faq)states that they will provide keys for customers who already purchased the game elsewhere, so even if you've already got your copy (thanks!), you can still get a Steam copy once we get through this process.

If you don't have a copy, leave a comment on the Greenlight page & you'll be entered to win a free copy of Episode 1 or the soundtrack!

Thank you!!

We weren't among the games chosen the other day. But! One of those games was Wadjet Eye's upcoming release Primordia, which went from being submitted to Greenlight to being Greenlit in something like 2 weeks. Clearly the people want adventure games, and we sure as hell ain't quitting!

Steam Game Fans has chosen Cognition (http://www.steamgamefans.com/greenlight-spotlight-cognition-an-erica-reed-thriller-2483.html) for their first Steam Greenlight spotlight series!

QuoteWhat does take center stage in a point and click adventure game such as this is the story and audio. The team in charge of the game's soundtrack did a great job with the first episode of the series giving the game plenty of memorable melodies that set the atmosphere throughout the game as the story unfolds well. Cognition's score brings back memories of murder mystery television shows from our childhood with its combination of dramatic and mysterious tunes. The music that accompanies Erica's shocking, violent, and disturbing visions of the future is an example of particularly strong execution by the team in charge of the game's audio.

I have a few thoughts.

One: Pendulo Studios put their solid semi-recent PC adventure game release "Yesterday" on the Android Google Play market around Christmas time.  It was on the front page of the Play store for a brief time and AdventureGamers still has the banner for the game on its rotation of ads.  They put out an ads-based complete version of the game for free and offered a pay version for $4.99 that loses the ads.  The free version of the game got somewhere in the range of one hundred thousand to five hundred thousand downloads.  The pay version got the range of 5,000 to 10,000 purchases.  I'm not sure what to think of that in terms of profitability.  However, what is certain is that a lot of people downloaded the free ads-based version.  Something you could try with Cognition Episode One is the same deal on the iOS Store and/or the PC version, and for as one of the ads you could throw in a token "if you like this game, please support the series by voting for it on the Steam Greenlight" with a link to the vote.  I think most of the market of people that would be willing to buy Episode One is probably tapped out at this juncture as things stand(not meant to offend, I have no stats on this, just an assumption) so this move could spark a new round of buyers and at the least should get a decent number of people that will at least consider clicking on your project to vote for it on Steam.

Two: Expanding the Greenlight campaign a bit to one of the major gaming sites like IGN or Penny Arcade if possible.  A mention from a major outlet like that can go a long way.

Three: This is not a criticism, your short trailer for the iOS version of the game is pretty good in my view, but one thing it doesn't do that you did do for the PC version trailers is mention some of the people behind the work of the game and their previous work.  Getting out some of that information might help a bit more with the popularity of the game there, and hence also help with the Greenlight voting.  Again, you could also put something linking to the Greenlight voting in said trailers.

I'm afraid getting major websites to notice you is not as easy as it seems, you can message them, but it's more than likely they'll never get back to you :P
Title: Re: Vote for Cognition on Steam Greenlight!

As stika said--big sites get a LOT of submissions and press releases and media alerts all the time, so getting featured there is not always easy. Trust me, we're always trying! :) Ads can be great, but of course they cost money and as an indie that's still new on the scene, keeping things budget-friendly is also always a priority.

We've talked about making Ep 1 a free download at some point. Probably not until all four episodes are released, at the very least, though. Apple also does not allow for links to outside websites to appear in their apps, so unfortunately, we can't even put in a link to our regular website there, much less Steam Greenlight. :/

Keep the ideas coming, folks, and thanks for the replies so far!

That policy by Apple is pretty lame.  I will say(again, not knowing the economics) that to me if you release Episode One as a free download I think it stands a far better chance of drawing newcomers to the series if it's released soonish rather than if it's released when the series is finished.

I wonder if that's the policy to discourage people from making purchases from outside an app (and thus depriving Apple of its 30% cut). :-\

I know this has been awhile now and you can buy cognition on Steam, but the actual greenlight program...I would have voted of course, but I had bought Eps 1-3 on Adventure Gamer and ended up buying Ep4 from Phoenix directly.

So, to help those of us who have bought the game elsewhere are we able to activate it on Steam? How hard is that for a Dev to set up?
