Title: Re:Multiplayer
Post by: Yonkey on May 29, 2004, 08:15:00 PM
I've decided to make this a new topic since I've actually had this same idea myself a while back.  8)

I don't see the connection with open source, but a multi-player adventure game certainly expands the boundaries and limits of traditional adventure games.  It would be really interesting if a game could accomplish this without becoming some sort of RPG. :)

I think it's linked to the KQ9 source. Three players, helping each other out with the puzzles. It probably wouldn't work out that well, but it could work. I don't know much about how the Royal(anyone know their last name?) family will work in the game, but I doubt they'd all be playable at the same time. If they were, it would probably be simple to implement the network code(not writing it).

P.S. I thought of another CLOSE one, the Quests in Balamb Garden. They have mini adventure games(quests), and they're not bad. Sadly, the multiplayer Quests are more like RPGs.

Yeah, I should have thought of that. B'rrr, do you know if QFG5 was any good? I've never heard anything about it, although I've played the demos(weird). I guess I'll do a google search about it.

well there was no multiplayer option in that game ; ( ...they thought it was too much effort to realize it, that's why i mentioned the demo.

anyway QfG5 was ok, I really liked the 'thief path' ; ) like i said too bad there wasn't any multiplayer option ; \

but then again, multiplayer is fun because you can play it more often, with different players, and it is always different, I hardly replay adventures, so multiplayer adventure is kind of weird because all the puzzles would be the same ; )

I thought about that problem awhile back. Just make multiple puzzles and solutions. As a basic example- Crossword puzzle that is different every time, or has you looking for different words every time. The first would be more time consuming, the second harder to make(but less time consuming).

I think if adventures did become multiplayer then they'd have to take on one of two forms. Either the idea you've said with really advanced AI etc with dynamic puzzles OR you take parts of MMORPG's and apply them to the adventure genre. For example have a team working on new parts to the adventure during its entire lifetime. The only thing about that of course is that unemployed people would get all the fun hehe. Still there are alot of oppertunites if it were structured for say four player ala Morrowind or any other RPG like that...

I think I've found one!   ;D
I think I've found an easy way to make them too.

Multiplayer adventure game (http://www.dimensionex.net/thebeach/multiplayer.htm)

Program to make a multiplayer adventure game (http://www.dimensionex.net/)

I tried "9", interesting game but yeah, way too many music-related puzzles. I completed it once but only with lots of walkthrough help. ;P

I would have used the word "lame" ::)

The concept is very nice & all, but the games are very crude - they have no appeal except for being muliplayer :-\
Not to mention there weren't any other players there! what's the point of multiplayer when you play it alone? :-\

I'll have to go with a complete blow rating on that attempt at multiplayer adventure gaming...or any kind of gaming for that matter...it was just a lame version of Myst with more than one person

They said it was a demo, of what their software was capable of. I haven't tried it, and probably won't, but was it that bad for a demo?
