Title: Installer File Causes Freezing, Cannot Be Deleted
Post by: Rosella on November 02, 2012, 10:42:13 PM
So, this seems like it might be related to things going on in the thread about Norton not liking the exe file, but it seemed like it was a different enough issue.

I could not run the Cognition installer at all. At first, double clicking on it would cause nothing to happen, but this had sort of happened on other exe files so I just reformatted my entire computer. I reinstalled the OS, drivers, everything, and redownloaded the Cognition installer. I checked the size of the file and it seemed fine, but when I tried to load it, the computer would try to load it but never finish. Windows Explorer would then crash.

I tried moving the file or changing any of its properties, and it wouldn't let me do anything. Any attempt to interact with the file would cause Explorer to crash. I tried deleting the file; Explorer crashed. I opened command prompt to delete it; it gave me an access denied error.

Finally, I rebooted the computer in safe mode with command prompt and it finally let me delete it, but I'd much rather have Cognition. :-\

can you do the following in safe mode: right click it, go to properties, and then look for a button that says "unblock" towards the bottom?
Iv replicated this problem twice now: but only with the demo. So maybe im totally off base, but if you find a way to for windows to "unblock" it, it should be accessible like normal.

EDIT: eureeka!! somebody who still has the problem try this: in the windows search bar type "uac" then click on the user account control. Turn it all the way down. (turn it back up again later!)
It specifically says that programs that are not certified with windows can conflict with the uac. so try turning it off :)

spinz, your solution definitely works. I noticed that when trying to run the Cognition installer, there was a task manager process called "consent.exe" (I think it was consent, or something similar). Anyway, it's like the UAC was trying to ask if the file should be run, but maybe because it's new and not in the MS certification database or something, the system was stalling.

Best thing for people to down downloading the game is:

a) disable UAC (not sure why I ever had this on, guess I liked the precaution in case I clicked something by mistake)
b) disable real-time virus protection

Otherwise, the Windows 7 OS may freeze.

Once I did this the installer ran just fine. After installing, I reenabled Microsoft Security Essentials real time protection and have had zero issues running the game.

Oi. Turning UAC off did nothing, but yeah, once I turned off real-time virus protection too, it immediately asked me if I wanted to run it. I said yes and it immediately started installing. Wonderful. Thanks for the help, guys. :)

Seriously though, what IS the process for getting certified? It seems like this is causing a lot of issues, and it lends this very sketchy air to the whole process. XD

woohoo. Oddly enough my antivirus has never complained about it (maybe it would if it wasnt the demo). I only got the freezey-ness when trying to interact with it. Good to know we've ironed out a way to help people out of it.
I found this article, its about windows vista but maybe it could help devs in the right direction: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb756886.aspx

Just as an update, the new (bugfixed?) Episode 1 installer does the same general thing. It installs fine (probably just due to my Windows settings now), but the file still can't be deleted unless I reboot in safe mode and delete it via the command prompt. The Episode 2 installer has no such problems. :P

Very strange. When did you grab the new episode 1 installer? At one point when the store was first launched we had yet to swap out the executable for the new Ep1 installer. Do you have a logo in the bottom left on game start mentioned the Episode 2 release date?

And where are you running the installer from anyway? It's possible Windows has some kind of self-defense mechanism if the installer is run from a My Documents directory or the root of the C drive.

I do not appear to have a logo at the bottom left. I downloaded it because the email I got said the new one was uploaded, but I guess I was too quick on the uptake. :P

And I'm running it from the Desktop.

Grab the new one then and let me know if there's any issues installing. We made a lot of improvements in January. :)

Also, running installers from the Desktop is generally a bad idea. I always download installers to a generic location like C:\Downloads so that Windows doesn't pitch a fit when I run them.

I had the same issues with Episode 1's installer, but the new installer mostly fixed the issue for me, it still took a few minutes for windows (or my AV) to read it, but nothing mind-boggling, 5-7 minutes give or take.

Whereas the old installer would case my PC to freeze

Is it? Why is that? I do this all the time and haven't ever had problems.

System folders like the Desktop and the root of the C drive tend to be more heavily guarded by Windows. Plus I prefer to keep my files more organized and stuff all my installers into a nicely categorized folder on a secondary drive in case I want to reinstall.

Also, you *really* don't want to accidentally run a self-extracting exe on your Desktop and end up with 50 new files on there. ;)

I knew the root directory and \Program Files were proected, but I didn't think the desktop was.

Much worse than running a self-extracting archive on the desktop:
One of the programs I test at work lets you delete exam files (EEG, etc.). It deletes the containing folder. If you register an exam on the desktop and then delete the exam, the desktop folder is deleted. :(

Well now that just doesn't seem particularly well thought out, just my opinion.

Wow, that is exceedingly poor code design. o_O

It wouldn't be awful if it only deleted it if the folder were empty...

Yeah. Of course, you're not supposed to register exams on the desktop, but we all know if it can be done, someone will do it. :P And of course,  it doesn't send it to the Recycle Bin - it's just gone. It might  be possible to get it back with some sort of recovery tool - I'm not sure.

At least it's not possible to delete the root directory!

...are you sure? ;)

I tried. I think it doesn't work because files (e.g. Windows) are in use. :) I suppose there might be some conditions under which it works, though.

Okay, I got around to downloading the actually updated Episode 1 installer and it gave me no trouble at all. Installed, showed the Episode 2 ad in the corner, and then quietly went off to the recycle bin. :)

Yay for Windows !!!

Computer was freezing (well I could move my mouse, but Explorer was freezing and you all know what happens when it is... you can as well hard reboot your computer).

Disabling UAC didn't change anything but as soon as I disabled realtime security, the installer window popped ! The anti-virus is Microsoft Security Essentials.

Now, after having lost more than 30 minutes because of this, time to go to bed. I'll have to play later.

Note that the installer is from IndieGameStand, but I guess it doesn't matter.

I'm glad you were able to get it working! :) Yeah, it sounds like real-time scanning is what's causing people the most strife. I use Kaspersky and usually don't have a problem.
