If you use sleeping pills too much, you become dependant (?sp) on/of them. No, I prefer the natural way of sleeping, no pills for me either.

Say: Have you tried warm milk? I hear some people say that helps induce sleep. Maybe some soft, calm music too. Or you could learn to meditate. That would help with the stress, too. :)

Or you could just tape the most boring lecturer at your college/university and listen to that. :D

Maybe we should get Say a trip to a spa. Or one of those funky bubble bath sets at the beauty store.

And it's a rubber mallet that you're supposed to hit people with, if I remember my quips correctly. ;) At least, that's what my mom always threatened to hit me with when I didn't want to sleep as a kid... ;]

Post by: ShinyKnight on June 12, 2004, 02:01:06 AM
The rules are simple. No posting except for between the hours of sunset to sunrise in your part of the world. I completely understand that this may not in fact happen, but it'd be pretty cool if it did. ;) So, all you people of the night, feel free to post to your hearts content, and maybe just tell everyone a little bit about your day/evening, how you're doing, etc. (The possibilities are endless, no? XB) As for me, it's 1am right now, and I'm writing to a certain girl who's fallen ill... (And fallen asleep!) Your turn. ::)
Title: Re:The 'Night Owl' Thread
Post by: J-ROC on June 12, 2004, 02:18:47 AM
Are we supposed to treat this similar to a "What are you doing thread"?

Or just some sort of generic posting of whateverness?

Anyway, it's 2:20am.

I'm waiting for pizza.

I'm trying to find the right words to also write an ill friend of mine.
Title: Re:The 'Night Owl' Thread
Post by: ShinyKnight on June 12, 2004, 02:24:14 AM
I guess whateverness would be perfectly appropriate, since that's what our minds tend to wander to at this hour anyhow. ;) Pizza sounds fantastic right now, actually. Too bad nothing in this sleepy little burg is open past about 11. >:( Hopefully our friend(s) feel better soon though, good luck with getting those words onto whatever medium applies. Also, check your PM. ;)

Actually, it's just a play on words. I used to call myself "Black Night", but too many people use it, and that last movie gives it a new meaning.

Well, that's why I didn't recognize it, cause you can't "unnerstand" the words to that unless you're really paying attention. ;)

Dallas is close enough.

I hope I don't offend you when I say this, but it's true. 8/10 of Texans say Texas is(and it is the largest on most of our maps). I've had Texans argue with me about it. I think that Americans have too much pride. I think Southerners(as in southern US) are worse, and Texans are worse than that(I'm talking about the average person).

Do you suppose that a bit of Texas money was thrown around when they were coming up with those maps? ;) "Here's 6 million bucks if you make Alaska shrivel up a bit. Kthx." ;-D

If you have any suggestions or songs that you HATE, feel free to PM me or simply reply to this post. Check out www.ocremix.org as well, they've got great mixes of almost 1200 video game songs and themes. Maybe choose some of your favorites from there? That is all. ;)

If we're talking about any video game songs, Deus Ex(main theme)/Sonic Adventure(Knuckle's theme)/FF(main theme, and Eyes on Me)/Railroad Tycoon3(main theme)/Zelda(main theme)/KQ1(main theme, green sleeves) I'll think of some more of my favorite game songs, later.

P.S. If I misunderstood, please explain it to me.

Wyoming is the only state with a lower population than Alaska.

Wyoming also has more cows than people, AND has the highest housing costs, on average, of any area in the US.

I'm not sure if all of these are true(I know some are), but they're good for a couple of laughs.

In Maine, it's illegal to catch lobsters with your bare hands.

In Louisiana, it's against the law to gargle in public.

In Quitman, Georgia, it is illegal for a chicken to cross the road.

It is illegal to a wake a bear for the purpose of photography in Alaska

In Hawaii, one is legally prohibited from putting coins in one's ears.

In New Orleans, Louisiana, fire trucks are legally required to stop at all red lights.

A local ordinance in Atwoodville, Connecticut prohibits people from playing Scrabble while waiting for a politician to speak.

I'm not sure exactly where it is, but somewhere in Arkansas, it's illegal to enter the town, unless you shoot a gun first.

I don't feel tired, but it's really late so I'm gonna go to bed now....

IIRC, there's been one night, long ago, when I couldn't sleep so technically speaking I've been awake for two days. I usually don't go testing that. When I have accumulated enough sleep, and I go to bed before my sleep cycle starts, I might lay awake for a few hours, but I fall asleep eventually.
When I look outside I see no stars, so it must be cloudy. However, the rain (& wind) from earlier this week has subsided and gone away, and now there's light clouds, lots of sunny moments and temperatures rising to the mid-20's (°C and during the daytime).

By the way, since I'm the king of useless trivia, I figured I may as well post in here and answer the above question... The current world record for staying awake is 264 consecutive hours, which is around 11 days. :o

You're not a wimp, Say... just that from what you post here, it sounds like you need to get more sleep and relaxation. Stuff like not sleeping well, too much stress, not eating well, etc., depresses your immune system and makes you more likely to catch an illness.

I know, that fixing that is all easier said than done ;P but seriously, if you run down your body too much you're more likely to get sick and then stay sick longer.

I can't post in here at the "proper" time tonight, because the electric company has decided it needs to shut off our power for a short while at some point after midnight. Last time our power was shut off it started at 8 AM, but we were warned a couple of days beforehand so we were prepared. I think it's very unlikely for our electric company to do that during the night, seeing as how that would disrupt many alarm clocks.
When there's a lot of rainfall in a short amount of time, somewhere there's a power conduit that's not properly shielded to keep it water-protected, so that triggers our electrical safety and 'poof' everything's down. Now when that happens during the night, then then you have a problem. :-\ BTW, my alarm clock is equipped with a possibility to retain time when there's a power outage, assuming you put a battery in there, but a) batteries are not environment friendly, not even re-usable ones, so we scrapped that, and b) I doubt that if the power's still out when the alarm's supposed to go off, the battery will do that too. Maybe we should all switch back to those old alarm clocks, the ones you had to wind up. :P

Wee, I can post here again! ;)

I actually don't use the alarm on my clock. As dumb as it sounds, I detest being jolted awake by the sound of an alarm so much that eventually I kept waking up constantly in the hopes of being able to shut off the alarm before it could go off. :P So I finally gave up on the alarm and just trained myself to wake up on my own. I actually almost always can do it, too. (Generally the only times I oversleep are either when I'm really zonked when I go to bed, or if I didn't go to bed early enough to get many hours of sleep. :P )

However, I did get stuck having to spend a hot sticky night with no fan. Grrr.

And I suspect the whole reason the electric company does that sort of thing at night is because that's the time that people are least likely to be actively using the electricity. I still wish they'd do it on the weekend instead, though. :P (They did warn us a week beforehand.)

And yay for J-R having a bed! ;) I slept on a couch for about 9 years a while back... didn't sleep in a bed regularly until I moved to Springfield a little over 4 years ago.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Actually, the alarm on my alarm clock is set to start playing the radio. The volume of the radio is set particularly low, in order for me to wake up nice and slow, and not being jolted. Ofcourse, the backside of it is, that sometimes I wake up too soon, so I stay in bed, I fall asleep again, and stay asleep until after the radio has played for 59 minutes, and shuts down. :P
Most of the times though, it works fine, and I wake up at the right time. In the weekend, or when I'm on holiday, the alarm clock time is set late enough for me to be either already awake when it goes off, or be sufficiently rested to stay awake. The reason why I go to sleep again during the week, is because I am constantly  having a small sleep deprivation. I's 11:18 PM and very dark outside.

It's 16oC (61oF) outside.

It's 11:28 PM. Have no idea of the temperature (I could go and have a look outside but I don't see the point). Tomorrow it's going to get 25°C, they say on the weather report. When I see a weather report, my standard response is "we'll see". They used to claim they have good predictions, but I don't see them claiming that anymore. ::) I'm having a day off from work tomorrow, to prepare myself mentally to the upcoming holiday trip. Yes, the group I'm travelling with is a special one, but they're all fun to be with. XB

It got up to 29oC today.  Explains the sunburn.

It's supposed to get up to 30oC tomorrow.  Eep.

We also had a hail storm this evening.  Apparently up to 2 inches of ice in some places.  Weird weird weird.

It's 16oC again, feel gross, and in pain.  Sleep will not come easy tonight.

It's 11:30 PM, and I'm all set for tomorrow, except for my pillow. You see, I don't sleep well on hotel pillows, they're too large and too high for my taste. Sleeping away from home is always a problem the first few nights, and the more I can make that hotel bed like the one I have at home, the easier it is for me to adjust.

I don't need 29°C to get a sunburn, prolonged exposure to the sun at temperatures above 20°C is quite sufficient. :S

Really?  I always find hotel pillows to be too thin and wimpy for my taste.  But I agree with getting used to a new bed is sometimes hard.  Easiest is just to stay up late or tire yourself out during the day, so you just pass out from exhaustion.  8)

You must have a really big pillow then. Tell you what, I'll take a photograph of a hotel pillow next week, afterwards I'll post it and then you can tell me if it's big and high, or thin and wimpy. 8)

Exhaustion, for me, is not a good sedative. And if I stay up late, I'm going to be exhausted during the next day, so that's no good either. :-X

It's 01:12 AM, and 29,2°C here on the upper floot. When it was still light, temperatures exceeded 30°C here, but I stayed on the ground floor. Outside, in the shades, it was 29°C, I checked. I dunno what the temperature is/was in my room, to which the sun has absolutely no access (facing northeast, and shielded by nearby infrastructure from the east). It's not time yet to use the air conditioner in our house, we have sufficient sun-shielding outside (don't know how it's called) to prevent the sun from reaching the double-glazed windows and intensify its rays. When the temperature reaches 35°C (in the shade), that's usually when we turn on our air conditioner, which only services the ground floor. 8)

I had once the unique chance to apply my portofolio at marvel comics and I never ever did, I got scared and I understimated me :( I remember that when I was in around 6th semester I was seeing Comics and such, and one day we had a personality showing (because he was friend of our teacher) and he was actually (is still) a sketcher/inker from marvel comics, he saw my work, he loved it and he made a separated appointment with me after class to review my portfolio, obviously it caught me off guard I had not much to show at that moment because I didn't know he wanted to see my work, eventually he saw some stuff, and he kept telling me to join over and over... I never did, I kinda regret it, the sad part is like, I would have been more scared to actually BE accepted rather than not be accepted, man I have selfsteem issues :( oh well... I think I should freaking let it go I guess.

It's 1:17 AM, completely dark. The temperature today was bearable, I didn't have to turn on the airconditioning in my (helluva nice) car when I drove back home, it's still 30.5° C uphere though.
BTW, I have two free subscriptions at Comics (http://www.comics.com). It used to be one (subscription, for two comics), but they changed their (free) policy, so I had to create another spammotel-address for the second one I was subscriped too, no bother. When I make a spammotel-address, I have to give it a name. Now, I named the first one "Snoopy by e-mail" (can you guess which comic I'm subscribed to?) and the second one just "Comics". The Snoopy-comic is now linked to "Comics" and the other one is linked to "Snoopy by e-mail". But, they both work, so I'm not much inclined to change that.

10.30 PM, pc's both crashed about 45 min's ago due to a short power failure, probably due to a lighting striking a power line somewhere in a certain radius. However, the electricity grid recovered within a matter of a few milliseconds, so it can't have been too close. Had to unplug the electricity in order for them to start up again, cause they wouldn't budge otherwise. Win95 OSR2-one did a scandisk, Win XP-home didn't, and when I manually ran one it didn't find anything either. In XP Home, I was busy transferring posts to OE6, so I re-started it but the folder I was working in was completely empty. :o Thus, I went to see the folder, and suddenly my previous folder was renamed and had a '(1)' in its file name. The original one was still there, but it would seem OE6 had removed its link. So, I tried fiddling with the folders.dbx, renaming all the '(1)' links with the original file name, but that caused OE6 to fail loading again. So, I moved that file to another folder, and started up OE6 again, and saw it could re-create that folder. So no harm done. Hence, I moved that file again, and now together with the '(1)'-file. I started OE6 again, no problem, and behold, my (last saved) original folder was back! 8)

I've been getting interesting offers on inheritance money in my e-mail lately, it would seem my addresses have been picked up by the Nigerian spam-mob. However, when I get such an e-mail, and I read it, I can't help but laugh really hard. What else can you do when you get an e-mail with

Three hours of sleep? I can imagine someone on call for life-or-death time-critical stuff like a military person or paramedic or police officer or firefighter or something getting little to no sleep regularly like that, but an ordinary person shouldn't be abusing their body that way. If nobody's at risk of dying, nothing else is important enough to run your body down that way... especially at our age! :P

Not to mention... how can you even function? If I get less than four hours of sleep, I'm completely useless mentally anyway. And even with four to six hours of sleep I'm still nowhere near my best. (And my best is pretty absent-minded to begin with, so, yeah.)

Quote from: Louisiana Night on September 06, 2004, 11:08:03 AM- *wondering if that advice was for Rob, or everyone on the forum* ::)

Mostly for Rob, although I know a few other people on the forum who it could likely apply to. :D

I was a bad girl during the Olympics and stayed up too late and only got 2-4 hours of sleep each night, and I felt like complete and utter crap. Not to mention it taking me twice as long to do all my tasks at work because I couldn't concentrate properly on it. Then I got ill, and my allergies started up. And I've been so busy on the weekends I still haven't gotten to catch up on my sleep debt. (reminds self not to go for a long time without a lot of sleep again)

I can think of more than a few occasions where Harrison will spend a long period of time doing nothing but running around a lot and not getting much "downtime", and them he'll end up getting sick because of it and missing out on several days of work and activities because he's ill.

I'm beginning to wonder if the reason I ended up so sick is because I had done nothing for almost two weeks, and then all of a sudden, I was rushing around for classes.  On top of that, I had taken a break from my multivitamins, and thus my immune system wasn't up and running.

It's possible... lack of proper rest does depress your immune system functioning.

8 AM is the time I wake up during the week, due to me being an evening person, so I desperately need the weekend to recover from a week-long of that. Therefor, having to go to work at 8 AM, and what's more, even on a Saturday, is definitely no fun at all. :X

Rest assured I am well aware of what is happening here, I'm just waiting for them to ask me for an account number, which has not happened so far. I will not transfer any money to them, unless I get something first (which has been aagreed on beforehand). It's just that finally one of them has answered to my reply so I am cery inquisitive as to how this thing will progress.
The AV-program has been registered and the X11-front is also working smoothly. I've already tested it on a file infected with the Bagle.AT.1-virus. 8)

I'm an evening person, which means it's easier for me to stay up later than go to sleep sooner. And no, 45 minutes isn't that long, as long as you've got some 'company', even if it's just the radio. Reading would also do, but that's not something I'd do when driving a car. I've had the 'pleasure' of having a spare car (during the time my previous care was being declared a total-loss and sold to a merchant and my current car, which had ha a small bump to the rear and had to be completely rewired) without a radio... one day and I was already frantically searching for a small portable radio.

Its 22:20, and since yesterday I re-entered Scam-central, level 2 (or is that 3 already?). Communcation from the barrister, bank and justice department has seized, but there's a new player in town, a financeial security company. All very hush hush, so hush hush they don't even have a website linking to theirs. :sneaky: And what's really strange is that, besides a proof of my ID (ofcourse) they want a utility bill! :P
I'll keep you posted of more interesting developments as they come along! :gossip:

It's 0:51 and I just read the previous post. :(
Anyway, level 3 of my scam-investigation has been aborted (don't know why though) and level 1 has been continued. Yes, my Nigerian Barrister has contacted me again with the wonderful news he seems to have found enough money to pay for the documents I need to 'claim my inheritance'. The tone of his e-mail has also made me wonder if that securities firm I told you about (level 3) isn't connected with him. Due to that e-mail, and the fact my webmail no longer provides the e-mail address he's contacting me with (although it's still valid until end 2005), I had no choice but to copy all of my Linux Thunderbird settings&data over to my Windows Thunderbird settings&data. Ofcourse, this means I will now have to re-synchronize my Linux Tunderbird once I've solved all problems with that OS. 8)

As long as the gizmo's midnight is the same midnight as mine, there's little change of that, since normally there's only one day/week when my computer's still on at midnight.

Anyway, one week before DST, so it still gets dark at 10 PM (and, for now, a bit sooner too). Linux partitioning is giving me hell, wants to install the new version on my XP disc, and the expert can't see any NTFS filesystem either. Apart from that, I'm still trying to read up after 9 weeks of absence. Still stuck on page 3 (of this section) for the moment, but I'll get there eventually.

Now I lay me down not to sleep
I just get tangled in the sheets
I swim in sweat three inches deep
I just lay back and claim defeat

Chapter read and lesson learned
I turned the lights off while she burned
So while she's three hundred degrees
I throw the sheets off and I freeze

Lids down, I count sheep
I count heartbeats
The only thing that counts is
that I won't sleep
I countdown, I look around

Who needs sleep?
well you're never gonna get it
Who needs sleep?
tell me what's that for
Who needs sleep?
be happy with what you're getting
There's a guy who's been awake
since the Second World War

My hands are locked up tight in fists
My mind is racing, filled with lists
of things to do and things I've done
Another sleepless night's begun

Lids down, I count sheep
I count heartbeats
The only thing that counts is
that I won't sleep
I countdown, I look around

Who needs sleep?
well you're never gonna get it
Who needs sleep?
tell me what's that for
Who needs sleep?
be happy with what you're getting
There's a guy who's been awake
since the Second World War

Who needs sleep?
well you're never gonna get it
Who needs sleep?
tell me what's that for
Who needs sleep?
be happy with what you're getting
There's a guy who's been awake
since the Second World War

There's so much joy in life,
so many pleasures all around
But the pleasure of insomnia
is one I've never found
With all life has to offer,
there's so much to be enjoyed
But the pleasures of insomnia
are ones I can't avoid

Lids down, I count sheep
I count heartbeats
The only thing that counts is
that I won't sleep
I countdown, I look around

Hala Hala Hala

Who needs sleep?
well you're never gonna get it
Who needs sleep?
tell me what's that for
Who needs sleep?
be happy with what you're getting
There's a guy who's been awake
since the Second World War

There are actually five stages of sleep. 1 and 2 are light sleep. 1 is almost like when you are day dreaming. 3 and 4 are deeper and more resting and harder to awake someone from. The 5th stage is you "REM" stage. This is where you have your vivid dreams and you have Random Eye Movement. You also get the best rest during this stage. I am hoping I remebered all of that correctly from last semester. But there ya go a quick overview on what I had to listen to for two hours.  ;D Lucky you guys.

It is a fact REM-sleep sorts your memories and thus enhances your mental condition, but I'm not sure that sleep is the best one for your physical condition. :-\
It's 23:10, nearing the end of yet another very hot day. :sweating:  Also a very tiring day, we went on a boat trip @ work, during which we had to pass three locks, two of them only once, one twice. Since our boat had no priority over commercial shipping, I estimate we had to wait a total of 2 hours (altogether) to be allowed to enter the locks. :-\

Well, there are 4 "NREM" sleep phases(I believe, don't quote me on that ;P)... so that could be the confusion.

Of course, it's only a matter of time until they come up with a new one. ;-D

Probably...the handouts I received didn't distinguish between NREM and REM.

And I agree with you completely on your latter point. They'll discover a sixth stage soon enough...maybe that is where lucid dreaming could be categorized.  ;P

That's where you can kinda control the dream, right? I think I had one of those...I was jumping 50 feet in the air and doing flips. XD
Another time, I had a dream where I realized I was in a dream, but I still couldn't affect it.
Title: Re: The 'Night Owl' Thread
Post by: Lollotte on July 05, 2006, 08:29:46 PM
Lucid dreaming is when the dreamer has control over their own actions/the ability to affect the course of events during a dream. Usually, there is one character within a dream (the "wild card") whom the dreamer cannot control. Both Jung and Freud (the former was allegedly a lucid dreamer) detail these concepts in their works on dream.

If you want to become a lucid dreamer, simply keep a dream journal and record all of your dreams and dream fragments in it. Then, your dreams will become more clearly defined and themes will be more obvious to you. Eventually, you will be able to control them.  ;D

Most of the times I wake up from a NREM-phase, and in those rare instances where I wake up during a dream, that dream usually fades from my mind even before I actually get  up. :-\
EDIT: it's almost 4 AM, and the hot weather has passed. Now it's just warm weather, but since the temperature in this house is usually trailing the outside temperature by 5° C, everything is peachy. :D

Well, if you don't remember the entire dream, just record one aspect of it that is still fresh in your mind. If it is still dark out when you are writing, use a small light so that you don't wake up all the way in the process of writing.

It's 4:00 AM and peachy where you are? Mmm...sounds pretty.  ;D

I can slightly remember 10 hours sleep/night. 9 better, and am currently at eight. During the week though I can hardly get 7, due to me being an evening/night person. I try to stay awake as late as possible, even though I know I will regret it the next morning. :-\
PS: It's no night (yet), all thanks to that stupid thing called DST, meaning, according to the human clock, the sun stays up really late.

10:40 PM and since the street lights are on outside, I think the sun's gone down too.  Although there are still no stars visible, it's not cloudy, and I can still see a bit of blue in the sky. 8) A bike just rode by outside... and it had both of its lights on! ::) If I can, I usually stay up at about 3 AM. If I got up at about 7 AM, I can stay up until about 4 AM, but that's it. Ofcourse, if I stay up until 3 AM, I won't get up the following day at 7, but rather at noon. When I have to get up at 7, I (try to) go to sleep at midnight, but it's really hard. :-\

0:00 it now said while on the site it's 23:52.
Well, I've fixed it.
Now it's 23:55

Washing clothes...this late is the only real time I can use the washing machine, so there's a plus.

The laptop has a € key. XD € € € €

:€ Rawr!

Okay, I'll stop. XD

Ever notice that when you need sleep, you start acting weirder? :P
Best example is my sister. Once 1 AM rolls around, she gives insanity a new meaning. :P

Who left the vinegar in my room!?

I need to get this place straightened up...paddles here, a jump rope there, and a "Cyber" bow across the room. Ahh, marketing. ::)

I'm cold...well, it's probably not really cold, this being Texas and all. :P

I think my clothes are done.

Yep, done. Drying now.

Now that the days are cooling off, I'll probably be able to go walking again...that'll be nice.

Am I the Myspace type? My brother thought so, and I was greatly offended. :P

Aww, the crying smiley has a tear frozen on his face.

I don't see how anyone can like the changes in the Star Wars SEs. I mean, they took out the Ewok song! And put Hayden in Return of the Jedi! And...*rant rant rant*

You know, every time things start looking up after a string of bad luck, someone in my family sings "Yub yub!". Somethings wrong with us. XD

So, I've been thinking...an Irish girl, with red hair, and white eyes. Yup, girl of my dreams. :P (Anyone who gets the injoke wins a free cookieh)

I refuse to celebrate "Talk like a pirate day". If I be wantin' ta talk like a pirate, I be doin' it any time I please, witout no landlubbin calandar tellin' me when ta! ARRRR!

*looks to the right* I wonder if that sweater still fits...

Swingsets rule. 3 cheers for 'em! ;D

My birthday's in 2 days. Buy me something. :P

Raphael is cool, but crude! Michelangello is a PARTY DUDE!

If I was an animal, I'd probably be a turtle. Teenage Turtle. Fill in the blanks. :P

Does it matter if trees make sounds when no one's around? Honestly! Those philosophers... ::)

Personally, I'm more curious as to where the term "Couch Potato" came from. :P

Find you, confine you, give fine and go bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeh!

My mom got a new mouse for the laptop. It's tiny. XD

I wonder...was that line really "KILLER MUSTARD!"?

Sometimes, I wonder if all our brains are swimming around in one big goldfish bowl of insanity. XD

I miss the good old days. And the good days that aren't quite as old. :P

Sometimes, I wonder...as for what I wonder, that's classified information! :P

Title: Re: The 'Night Owl' Thread
Post by: Delling on September 30, 2006, 08:04:35 AM
...I wasn't "getting at [anybody's] throat"... I was being logical: it is unfair to categorize everyone who isn't on MySpace as actually having more problems than those who are on it... it also can't be made as a logical argument unless one happens to know about the lives of everyone on MySpace... but look, I didn't reply to Yonkey's post because I decided to really drop it after my post. If Yonkey or anyone wants to continue the conversation, he can PM me or email me, but I don't feel like having a logical debate on the forum... to put it another way: I'm lucid at the moment and I still support my position that the generalization is unfair and that the issue of "problems" lacks definition, but I'm also lucid enough to keep any discussion of this off the forum, all right?

Anyway, let's get back to the topic, I'm a Night Owl. 8)  How many of you guys are?

I have pulled one all-nighter that I can remember. I don't recall having any all-nighters in college... I think I may have tried once... but just couldn't do it...

So, the one all-nighter I pulled was in the 6th grade. I had to do a "My Nation" notebook. Only my school, in an effort, I believe, to stave off the development of narcolepsy in its teachers required us to each do a different nation (instead of everyone doing a "My Nation" notebook on the US as the textbook provider who provided the notebook had intended). I had to do Iceland, and being in 6th grade and not having done this type of project before (the textbook provider provided things like My State notebook, My [...] notebooks for earlier grades, which the rest of my class had done but I was new to the school and so hadn't done them), I put it off to the last minute thinking it wouldn't be any more or at least not much more involved than previous projects that I'd had to do. My dad, my sister, and I were up until something like 5 in the morning finishing that terrible thing. *still has an initial negative reaction at the mere mention of Iceland* *shudders to think about it*

That is why you shouldn't pull all-nighters: Iceland. :P Or, at least, that is why I don't pull all-nighters.

It's 1:06 AM. I'm up because I stayed home sick the past two days so I got to sleep in. This is very bad for a number of reasons. :P

1) I have to get up in 4 hours.
2) I have my CIW certification exam tomorr--Er...today.
3) I have a sleepover/party thing Saturday night, so there's no way I'm getting sleep on the weekend. XP

And I've pulled all-nighters lots of times. XP Freshmen year, all of my bus-mates thought I was absolutely crazy because I'd come to school with 0-3 hours of sleep most days. I had time-management/homework issues freshmen year. :P This year I haven't had to go without sleep entirely, but I did stay up until 3 one day (keeping in mind I get up at 5) because of my calculus scrapbook. It's this recurring assignment where every 2 weeks we have to add another section to our "book" (which is, for most people, a power point. I have a website,) about, well, calculus-type stuff. It's a lot of work. XD

My sister did something like that last year. She had a video project due, and her team members came over to do the last half of it the day before. Eventually they had to leave, and she was going to finish it up. By the time she did, it was already getting late, and then stupid windows movie maker crashed everytime she tried to save it as a movie file. Her, me, and my dad were up till 1-2 in the morning trying to get it to work; she eventually just copied the project and all the files it needed(which was a lot) and ran the project inside WMM during the presentation.

*shudders* Stupid school projects...I always hated that they made you stay up way too late doing them and then made your insides boil being nervous about presenting them :P

One of the advantages of being homeschooled is that I never had to worry too much about that sort of thing. I never had to worry about group projects for better or for worse. :P

Ah, and it's 4 Am. :P

Really?  Did you ever have to participate in group activities (like charades or plays) at family reunions?
Title: Re: The 'Night Owl' Thread

Reunions? The only thing we do at our reunions is eat (a lot) and talk (also a lot). No plays or anything like that. Most of the people who actually show up are middle aged and don't see each other except at the reunion, trying to get everyone to do a play would simply never work. :P

That said I was on a debate team for a year and planned activities like the math games tournament for a pack of 6th graders, so it isn't like I have no experience working in groups. It just wasn't part of what we counted as 'school'. :P

Ugh! I did. When I took AP Physics, our teached decided to give us a project that they did at MIT - build a device to play tug-of-war with someone else's device. It was a cool concept, but I didn't have any kind of engineering experience. I knew my partner's idea wouldn't work, but I couldn't say anything because I didn't have any better ideas.  :-\ That was one of the worst classes I ever took - the teacher didn't even teach us anything; he just told us stories about when he lived in Russia and made crude jokes. >:( Fortunately, I had a really good physics teacher in college, and calculus-based physics made SO much more sense to me!

I'm still kind of upset I didn't get to take AP Physics this year. There was a bit of a scheduling conflict. :P I have the same teacher, just no AP credit.

It also bugs me because I stare at something for 20 minutes until I suddenly realize "OHH! It's just CALCULUS!" and then it makes sense. :P

It's just past midnight, but I'm exhausted. I have a powerpoint to do on W3C (which I realize I'm not helping by posting,) and probably some French homework I don't know about. On the bright side, I just have a slide on CSS to do and I'm done. :D

XD I know what that's like. I'm taking an electronics materials course, and we were asked to derive a certain equation. But in order to do that, the one basic equation had to be at a minimum, and I couldn't figure out how to do that, until I realized that all I needed to do was take the derivative.

It doesn't feel like 9 or 10 hours of sleeping if you're super tired.  It feels good to me, but I'm one of those freaks that loves a good nap. ;D

I just want to say that naps are beautiful gifts from god. XP

So it's 3:13 AM. I don't think I'm going to sleep tonight. I mean, I could sleep for a bit between now and 6 if I were tired, but...I'm not.

I've pretty much finished my college application process for applying early decision to RIT, finished my application for the National Merit Scholarship, have packed my stuff for a trip to my mom's apartment, and MAY have done my chorus make-up work (or I may have just spent 20 minutes critiquing a choir I can't use for credit).

I still have database homework to do (which will take 30 minutes max), and a lab report to rewrite (which may take up to 45 minutes depending on how much I have to rewrite/how distracted I am). I am not tired in the least, and it's kind of bothersome, considering the fact that I have to be awake to drive between 6 this morning and 6:20 and later between 2 and 3 this afternoon. :P

There is no reason I should be awake, and yet I am. Is it application stress? General stress? Ennui? XD

Maybe it's just my general night-owl-ness. Either way, all I have to do is homework that isn't due until Monday. Also, senior year is amazing. The amount of homework is a huge relief after junior year. XD

Senior year is the shiz.  I absolutely HATED my junior year, that's the year of AP classes.  :X Senior year is playtime, and the teachers know it.

Congrats on your Senior status!

Senior year of highschool was fun!  Even senior year of university was much better than the previous years.  You still have your share of classes that are insanely difficult, but there's also a nice range of classes you actually like and enjoy.  There's even a few extremely easy courses tossed in, which always rule. XD

But, I think it's the whole notion of "Dude!  Just a few more months and I'm outta here!" that makes the whole year a lot more exciting! :P
