Title: New forums
Post by: Lambonius on January 06, 2013, 05:30:56 PM
Ugh.  Why??

Hopefully this isn't the final version.  The dark navy blue backdrop to all the text is a real eyesore, as it creates some nasty contrast with the comparatively bright buttons, boxes, and text (much of which is a pale yellow/orange, making the contrast even more garish.)

And the new organization, with everything labelled "General," "Specials," and "Child Board" is ridiculous and unnecessary.  Talk about overcomplicating things.  Please reconsider.

Ironically, I wanted to include you in the focus group that had a saying in these changes. Unfortunately, you were never available on skype to talk about this. And you sure know I did try to reach you out several times.

This is obviously not the final CSS style sheet, and the divisions are to make areas simple. Directors and forum members had a saying in this. Quite frankly, it was way too many boards in the wrong places.

We're still working on this.

Yeah, I just noticed the WIP announcement.  As for the reorganization, thankfully I'm not a layperson and actually know what a "child board" is, but you're probably going to run into a lot of people confused by that term, and confused by the fact that you now have to click MORE times to access stuff that used to be available right on the main forum page.  It's a pretty solid rule of thumb in web design that any time you're adding clicks to a process, you're having a negative impact on overall functionality.  Incidentally, the same thing can be said of adventure game interfaces (cough cough...COGNITION...cough.)  ;)

My fault, I was transitioning to the new CSS and I was in a hurry to simply get a *readable* layout lol. Our CSS Master is cracking his knuckles at the style as we speak. Once we get the main look out of the way we will handle all the nice-to-haves. (Youtube embedding, making wording more clear, a chocolate fondue for teh Asylum...)

No longer the ugly white, ugly light blue, ugly black and then whatever other shade of blue (insert here whatever color from today)

It's back to its great pooptastic grey color now, everyone can sleep at peace. However CSS style sheet is not done yet, so please continue to be patient with us. Thank you.

UNLESS YOU EMAIL HIM WITH THIS, he won't know. And if he does know I'll tell Mike to switch it to the blue that Lamby loved oh-so-much in the first place :P

Then we will all be blind and chocolateless-ly. Or something.

...Why did you guys move the messages thing and all unred posts thing so low? It was fine where it was a few minutes ago, y'know right underneath my avatar all neat and seeable.

Well, if you're going with that, then I'm enlarging my avatar again.

I'm guessing it's just an alignment issue that'll probably be fixed. The CSS seems to be minutely different every single time I visit the forums, so I wouldn't take corrective action just yet. XD

EDIT: And look, the alignment is being messed with as we speak. :P

Yes, I apologize for the mess.

In a very serious note, this has truly taken longer than expected which personally makes my frustration grow as well. I've got nothing to say that will excuse this, just thank you for being so patient about all this.

Say, don't stress. We know you (...and hopefully some other people. Please tell me there are more people working on this than just you. D:) are trying your best to make this work, and it's coming in small changes rather than one giant forum outage, so I think it's going well. The person most being inconvenienced is you and your stress level. <3

It's not me working on the CSS code. I did try but without dreamweaver I am at loss trying to understand, I've got to leave it to the programmers.

In fact, this wasn't even in the plans because the idea was to update the forums because it hadn't been taken care of in years. Ideally, from SMF1 to SMF2 all that was meant to happen was just adapt the old design into the current one. There's no redesign happening for the forums, just updates and maintenance.

The frustration comes that something that was scheduled for 2 days it's taking about 6 days and it's just going slower than I wish it would. Those who know me, do know that when we do forum updates they go live when we did them. And when it comes to web it's nothing but a platform for content coming.

So updates are delayed, content is also delayed but days are still going by, I just feel there's no excuse to this, so all I can say is sorry and feel like a complete idiot about it. I feel regardless of how much appreciation some of the community may feel for me or the team, it's still a responsibility and it's like we're failing.

To me, the community means everything. Our forums are our world, so of course it's sort of a big deal to me and frustration grows by the day.

Well, not sure if all of the updates are done, but the CSS is looking back to normal. :)

Yay! :D I'm sure there's a few things left I missed, and of course buttons need to be color changed, but other than that I'm done tweaking the heavy duty stuff.

Apologies if this is a known issue, as I assume you're still working out the kinks, but editing posts doesn't seem to be working right. The in-line editor (yay! :D) opens but won't save, and the full-page editor redirects to a Forbidden Error 403 page when saving.

Thanks for your hard work!

That's weird...in-line editing is working now. It didn't a minute ago. :P

Um.....okay, so it looks like editing is just not working for this post (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?topic=12693.msg346450#msg346450). Maybe something to do with it being the first post in the thread?

I'm not sure why but it appears there's a setting somewhere that prevents too many url tags in one post.

It's great Enchantermon, please do report anything you see around.

I've been trying to edit, post and pretty much do anything to see if I pick up little things and we're still going by, it's important you or anyone else post about these things so we can get around to fix them/re-do them.

One interesting thing of note is that you can put as many straight urls as you want within a post... it's just the bbc tag that is borked. I'm baffled.

Ah...well, that would certainly explain it. I guess the 10 that are already in there are over the limit, and they just got grandfathered in. Bummer.
Title: Re: New forums
Post by: Oldbushie on January 10, 2013, 08:46:11 PM
It must be a bug with SMF 2 itself because none of the theme-related stuff touches that code. Maybe at the part of the code where it formats the text for the database.

Edit: I posted the issue on the SMF forums and they said it might have something to do with mod_security settings on the server. That has the bad habit of fouling up all sorts of things depending on how strict the settings are.

Interesting. Ah well. Once I make playlists it shouldn't matter anyway.

Another question: I noticed that all of my previous LP threads (which all happen to also be King's Quest games) have been moved to the Special Features topic of the Silver Lining subforum, while my Amnesia thread is in the Creative Corner topic. So were my previous ones moved because they were King's Quest related, and all non-King's Quest-related LPs go in Creative Corner? Or was this a mistake?
Title: Re: New forums
Post by: Say on January 16, 2013, 09:48:58 PM
It was because they were KQ related, we thought it was best to keep with KQ content.

What you may do is create a new thread in the Creative corner-Haven/Random Talk-Lounge where you show your most viewed content or categories per games (however you'd want to do it), considering now we can link youtube videos it'd be somehow interesting to put together.

Title: Re: New forums
Post by: Enchantermon on January 16, 2013, 10:20:17 PM
So instead of a new thread per LP, just one megathread that I keep adding on to? Or am I misunderstanding?
Title: Re: New forums
Post by: Say on January 16, 2013, 10:30:17 PM
Correct, you can create a new thread where you showcase your work.

One thread with all info, unless is something very special and you're looking for very specific suggestions/feedback then you may want to consider a new one - for example a poll on which new game to go for, or whatnot.

I think best areas would be either Random Talk or Creative Corner.

'Kay. Works for me.
In that case, maybe I'll just modify my Amnesia thread then.....if I can change the title. Otherwise I'll just start one more in Creative Corner and keep it all in there going forward.
Thanks! :)
