Why have people like Retsupurae and Matthew Murray and the like always hated King's Quest?
Better question: Why should we care? :P
Who?
Also a good question!
Because the geniuses at Retsupurae possess superior knowledge of what makes a good computer game, as opposed to us short-sighted simpletons. ::)
Also, I Google searched Matthew Murray, and got:
Matthew Murray, an English steam engine manufacturer who lived in the 1700s;
Matthew Murray, an unstable school shooter who killed 4 people and then committed suicide;
And Matthew Murray, a soccer player.
If the Matthew Murray you're referring to isn't important enough to be mentioned in the top 3 search results, then who the hell cares?
I had to Google both - never heard of them. I was amused to see that "Retsupurae" is a pseudo-Japanese pronunciation of "Let's Play." :P
I know who Retsupurae is (a bunch'a folks who riff on bad Let's Players, Flash animations and the occasional cartoon) and I think they're funny.
Matthew Murray? Not sure who that is.
You'd have to ask them.
And I'm going to go with "Who gives a vulgar-term for copulation?"
Bt
I'm sure if they have videos where they say they don't like KQ, they would elaborate in some manner.
As far as I can tell, one of the Retsupurae guys (Slowbeef, I think) played KQ6 as a kid, and then "grew out of it." When the two of them riff on KQ6, they talk about how bad the intro cutscene's graphics are (an irrelevant criticism, since that was considered cutting-edge at the time), the hammy voice acting (again, that voice acting was considered good at the time), and dialogue that goes on for way too long. Also, they, like a lot of people, utterly despise Alexander.
I will say that they have a point about making Tony Jay do five or six different characters that all sound pretty much the same. Also, Lady Celeste's voice acting...there is NO excuse for how that turned out.
Also, they riff on KQ5 and then KQ7. They consider KQ5 a pile of suckiness and KQ7 a veritable mountain of suckiness.
But again, why should we care?
How exactly does one "grow out" of KQ6 anyway? The others I can understand, but KQ6?! The one that most people consider the absolute best out of the whole series?!

Hmm, that seems a pretty shallow criticism. If I were to attack KQ6 I'd pretty much have to attack the entire KQ franchise, and argue that the whole fairytale adventure game idea is childish and that we should demand games with more complex plots and characters.
But I won't, because while I do want games with more complex plots and characters, that doesn't mean the KQ series is bad for not being that. There's more than one kind of game, y'know?
So, meh, their criticism kind of sucks. :P
