Title: Gabriel Knight Remastered: GK2 easter egg??
Post by: bigdgoriders on June 08, 2015, 03:55:02 PM
Doing another play through of the remastered version of Gabriel Knight and I think I've found a cool Easter egg that references Gabriel Knight 2.  In the book shop in the cupboard where you find the tweezers and the magnifying glass there's a snow globe.  When you click on it Gabriel says "I forget where that came from, but... seems like a nice place to visit."  The buildings are definitely Germanic and look a lot like the gasthaus and rotthaus in Rittersberg in GK 2.  Anybody else notice that?

Good eye! Yep, that inset has a number of in-jokes and Easter eggs like that. :)

bigdgoriders: You have a kinda microscope inside the eye, don't you?  ;) With 1280x1024 resolution I don't recognize anything inside the snow-globe.

Katie: Is the Madonna of the inset a reference to the Virgin Mary Statue at Marienplatz-Munich (GK2)? The remark of Gabriel is similar: Virgin Mary watching Gabriel.

Both: Do you know that Rittersberg's square is a real life place in Germany? Click here (http://therealrittersberg.jimdo.com/gk2-rittersberg-market-place/). There is a photo attached.

Another good catch by Signore! :) It's mostly a general reference to Gabriel's destiny as further revealed in GK3, though, and not specifically to the one in Munich.

Thanks, Katie! Yep, the family's destiny gained at Jerusalem.

Two more possible references in the inset:

Could be Ludwig's Neuchwanstein Castle the building of the photo or card below of Blake Backslash's books?

Is Grandpa Munster the little man sticking out from Blake Backslash's shelf?

The castle is a yes :)

The Grandpa Munster one, I'm not sure! Not that I know of, though.

Thanks, Katie! The Eggjäger side of life is rewarding, ... sometimes (see below).

Meanwhile, I have read your postmorten at gamasutra (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/240049/Remaking_Gabriel_Knight_A_20thanniversary_postmortem.php). Very interesting!! Despite all the went-wrongs, limited budget and time, you all have made a pretty and great remake full of improvements.   The graphics are so beautiful and the animations fantastic: my heart was shocked when the mummies took Gabe's heart away; great, great, great!!  :o I've enjoyed also seeing the GraceFreakout video at gamasutra. :suffer:

At the very end of the posmorten there is an intriguing statement: "1 Easter egg hidden (still not found!)."
Is it the easter egg found by bigdgoriders?
In GK1-1993 there are 2 easter eggs hidden: Gabriel hitting the mime, and the car crash when leaving from Schloss Ritter in day 8. I could not play them again in the remake, and I haven't found anything anywhere about them.  :(
Any little clue for where to look for or try?  :help:

In Mosely's office there is a book: LEPRICORN GAMES by Robert Copperstein. Lepricorns are similar to Leprechauns (short red-haired Irish elves).

4 options:

- Mosely: Has he Irish roots? I'm not sure.

- Katie Hallahan: She has Irish roots for sure. In her own words: "Snark advocate, redhead by aspiration, and Irish by design. ... ... I'm an Irish lass, and I burn easy, so the hot outdoors of the summer are not so much for me."

- Leprechaun Games: There are a lot of videogames about Leprechauns, gold and rainbow.

- King Quest: Leprechauns of Daventry lived in the Land of the Leprechauns under the Mushroom Isle, but were later driven out by King Graham. See this page (http://www.postudios.com/fourwinds/?p=628) and another one (http://kingsquest.drque.net/MagicShield.php).

I've found in this thread (http://forum.pinkertonroad.com/showthread.php?1045-10-Days-of-Gabriel-Knight-Countdown-to-Release!) of Pinkerton Road Forums that the "car crash" easter egg was removed from the remake (Gk1 20th).

Summary:
Sai: I'm wondering something though, is the easter egg of pressing space as soon as you see the screen for Day 8 still active or not?
Katie Hallahan: LOL, unfortunately that one isn't there anymore, Sai.
Sai: Oh well, I figure that without all that snow the road conditions might be drastically better
Voodooray: I understand its been replaced with a meteor strike now.

I think that the remark of Voodooray is a joke about "The Temptation" graphic novel, though I'm not too sure.

I'll keep looking for the "punch the mime" easter egg.

Returning to the close-up of the counter's within (at St Georg's Rare Books) ...

There are some self-help books. When Gabe looks at those, he says "The one on top was a joke gift from Mosely". The title of the on top book is "Fear to commitment".

The title is a reference to Grabriel's future in GK3. Because of his fear to commitment, he will lose Grace.

Even more in GK3 (Day 3), when Mosely and Gabriel are talking about the love-night between the would-be couple, Mosely says to Gabriel: "It must be your fear of commitment effecting your optical nerves. Grace is beautiful -- she's nice, she's smart, she's funny. You oughtta have your head examined, and besides which, I oughtta break your neck for hurting her feelings! Did you get a look at her face this morning?"

In the alley beside the Police Station (where is Mosely's window) there is a graffiti. In my particular translation, I understand that the graffiti says "Police, I smell dog (or s***)".

If my translation is correct, it would be a nod to a genre of graffiti about the eternal war between police and street painters. I've found another example (https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B_nakSX0fVysX01HVEVXQmRwVms&usp=sharing) of them in St Google.

When Gabriel looks at the graffiti, he says "I should add 'Mosely' to the hat. Always offending his "friend" Mostly.

Returning again to the close-up of the counter's within (at St Georg's Rare Books) ...

There are some self-help books. In one of them we can see that the author is "Steven Corvey". I think it's a reference to Stephen Covey (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Covey), an American educator, author, businessman, and keynote speaker. His most popular book was The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

Gabriel has made good use of the book becoming a highly effective Schattenjäger.

I've just noticed that in the chapel of Schloss Ritter has been added another statue of Virgin Mary (Madonna). That statue wasn't there in the GK1 original (Sierra).

There's no option to look at the statue, but I guess it is another hint of Gabriel's destiny.

At Schattenjäger's shrine hidden in the library of Schloss Ritter, there's a golden apple on the right side.

This could be a reference to the temple's phase at the end of GK3. 2 reasons:
- "Apples of gold" are present in the writings of King David (PSALM 23:4) and King Solomon (Prov. 25:11). And the temple of GK3 is a replica of Solomon's temple.
- When Gabriel is stucked at the scale of the pendulum room, he must weigh some golden stuff. One of them looks like an apple. See this image (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_nakSX0fVyselprVmhvWGlQTkE) to compare.

What do you think? I personally think that it's a so forced connection!  :-\

Not that I'm aware of!
So, I started searching for the easter egg in the new exterior added at police station.
I tried a lot of actions and iterations with the 3 nearly identical girls, the Rada drummer and the car, but nothing happened.  :(

Next, I grabbed the tire iron, went to all the locations, and used the tire iron with all the interactive characters and objects, though nothing happened.  :( :( :(

1 Easter egg hidden (still not found!) - Episode 2

I noticed that the "Ask the Loa" machine has 7 letters in the top row and 6 in the bottom row, exactly the same as "Gabriel Knight":
Gabriel -> 7 letters
Knight -> 6 letters
So, I tried to set "Gabriel Knight" in the placeholders, but it is completely impossible, though I even tried to set the letters in disorder.

I also noticed that all the letters of the correct password ("Trusted Friend") share the same font type and color (black). Next, I discovered that there are 3 types of letters: blacks, dark greys and light greys.

If you set all the light grey letters, "@TheLoa SayNo#" is displayed.  :) Funny, but it doesn't happen anything.

It's impossible to set all the dark grey letters, because in the 3rd and 5th placeholders of the bottom row there's no option to choose a dark grey letter. Very weird!! Hummm... Anyway, if you set all the dark grey letters in the top row, "Silence" is displayed. Even weirder!!!  :o

Finally, as always with this sort of machines, you can set other known "words", like "Reigns", "Feigns", "FryGod", "FayEnd", "FeyGo#", "SayNod" (with different colors) in the bottom row. I tried a lot of combinations of known "words", but it never happened anything.  :-[

In this folder (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_nakSX0fVysTVJJa1FVd3Z1T2M) are some of the tried combinations.

But I have discovered who are behind you!  :P Mikael Palsio (MikPal (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11243)) and/or Elisa Pavinato (ePavinato (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1535)). These are my proofs: lunch (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?topic=12307.msg342348#msg342348), pinterest (https://es.pinterest.com/postudios/unofficial-art/), barboncino rosa (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?topic=13738.msg357860#msg357860), easter egg (https://elisapavinato.carbonmade.com/projects/5592750) and pink poodle (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?topic=13802.0).

I have also found the thanks in Cognition-Ep.4, GK20th & Moebius' credits:
""The Phoenix Team would like to thank
The Pink Poodle, The Muuubius Cow and Gentleman Puddle, for offering us guidance (all hail!).""
Now I know about Pink Poodle & Muubius, but I have no idea about Gentleman Puddle.  :( Is it the pet for GK20th?

Thanks for offering me guidance to the secret answers, but I have gotten lost in the way. Sorry!  :'(

When I was trying to trigger off the bug mentioned in this post by Chrury (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?topic=14520.msg363558#msg363558), I caught other bug in the bedroom of Schloss Ritter. See the attached images or this folder (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_nakSX0fVysU0tSVmxMU0FGSVU).

Must click where is showed in the image "Flying Gabriel - hotspot.jpg", a little up and right of the last candle of the candelabra. Don't matter if the window is closed or opened.

Actually, Gabriel doesn't fly, it looks like he takes an elevator. The animation is very funny. Enjoy!

I can explain a little bit here. For the bug I posted, the scenes are (mostly) set up with a 2D BG image, and a transparent masking geo for the set. This way we have the lovely painted background but the geo defines the space that Gabe walks around and casts shadows in. That tree is in front of the BG and outside the window but since the set is transparent we have to do some layer magic to get it to visually be in the right place. I don't know if it was the animation on the tree or what, but that tree kept jumping inside when we weren't looking. Took about a week to get him to stay put. Thus the comic.

And I see you found one of THOSE bugs. I was pretty sure we got all of those.  :)
What's happening is we define the spaces that Gabriel can walk in a scene. We also have a system where if you click outside that walking area, Gabriel will walk as close as possible to where you clicked. This usually works but sometimes there's some geometry in the way. Gabe clips into the thing a little bit and he floats up to get on top of it.  This is technically closer to where you clicked but it's four feet off the floor. >_>

And ya'll still haven't found the 'big' easter egg? We might have to spill the beans! :p

A few weeks ago I sent Mikael Palsio an email about the Gentleman Puddle. He replied kindly to me and unveiled some details:

- ""Gentleman Puddle hasn't appeared in any game.""

- ""I drew a picture of a puddle for Elisa with a tophat, a monocle and a mustache."" So it's a true Gentleman puddle. **Elisa is Elisa Pavinato, nickname: ePavinato**

- ""Then we deviced a love triangle between the Poodle and the Cow with the Puddle looking suspiciously at them from a glass jar."" **the Cow is Muuubius**

Other crazy in-joke between Elisa & Mikael!  :D

See the attached image or click on this link (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_nakSX0fVysOHFFczNTUGxFTWc). I think that the picture of 'Gentleman' Erica could be a homage to the Gentleman Puddle, because the authors of the artwork are Mikael, Elisa and Rhonda Bowlin.
