I visit the Hero6 site every once in a while, but I don't enter the forum. I don't have time for foruming anymore -  I've already stopped posting on the AGDI forum because of that, and I'm pretty much on my last leg even here :(

I don't think it would hurt not to go to IA as much as the others. Not much happening there.

Ah, but then everyone say "it wouldn't hurt" and before you know it the place is brimming with action and you have to spend 4 hour a day just to keep up. This place was pretty dead when I first came here, and look how that turned out ;P

Title: Hero6 6th Anniversary
Post by: Swift on May 27, 2005, 07:28:11 PM
Hero6's 6th anniversay is on 5 June. To celebrate this occasion, we'll be having two chat sessions (4pm and 7pm EST) where you'll get the opportunity to talk to the Hero6 development team about anything under the sun. What's more, we're also running a contest where you get a chance to script lines for Hero6 Babe, our chat bot. The winning lines will be spoken by Hero6 Babe in the chatroom from 5 June onwards.

Details are now up  here (http://www.hero6.com/visitors/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=500).

Hope to see you there!

Just as long as it's funny and in good taste. :) Good luck!

That's right, folks! The Hero6 team has decided to include a speech pack (http://visitors.hero6.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=704) into the game. I'm proud to announce that we've also included a sample below so that you'll know what to expect when the game's finally released. Go hear them now!

Which files? I can try amplifying them and then re-release the zip file.

A note about the Speech Pack link - I overlooked the fact that clicking on the link directly would cause garbled text to appear. Please right-click on the link and select "Save As". It's a zipped file, so save it as such. There really is a speech pack for those who didn't know.

It wasn't really surprising - no one (especially not Hero6!) would choose April 1st to make such an announcement, unless they're trying to mess with people's heads ::)

I was surprised, however, since I sorta assumed a project of Hero6's caliber would have a speech pack to begin with :-\
Title: Re: Hero6 has a Speech Pack!
Post by: Swift on April 03, 2006, 07:31:14 PM
This prank was meant for laughs, not to fool people, kinda like how Blizzard does their pranks.

BurgerCraft (http://www.blizzard.com/press/060401.shtml)
Wisp (http://worldofwarcraft.com/burningcrusade/townhall/wisps.html)
Evil Patch Notes (http://worldofwarcraft.com/patchnotes/patch-06-04-01.html)

It's a lot easier and safer to make funny jokes than to make a believable prank, which is why we opted for that route.

The team decided years ago not to have a speech pack because of quality concerns, but hopefully the team would be keen to produce one after the game's released.
Title: Re: Hero6 has a Speech Pack!
Post by: Yonkey on April 03, 2006, 08:09:47 PM
I actually prefer jokes to pranks, since the latter is not always funny to people that fall for it. ;P

That being said, you guys should really consider having a some voices at least for cutscenes if not a full-blown speech pack, since they can definitely add to the richness of a game. :)
Title: Re: Hero6 has a Speech Pack!
Post by: Swift on April 03, 2006, 11:08:27 PM
I'd love to release the game with a Speech Pack for the reasons that you described, Yonkey, but the majority in the team would prefer not to have one. Hopefully we'll have a Speech Pack after the game's released or something.

QuoteAlthough the speech pack was a joke, we are flattered and pleased that people feel enthusiastic enough about the project to respond with such passion about it!

It's  these kind of happy accidents that makes us even more committed to delivering a quality product for everyone to enjoy. We do apologize for any misunderstanding and hope the prank is taken as what it is, a fun indulgence in an even funnier tradition.

First IA, now Hero6...*sakes head sadly* I really hope it doesn't happen here next.
I noticed something really strange, I got three e-mails from QFMG.com, saying something like "Please help our forum" and a download link. Next thing I know, I've downloaded a virus. Luckily nothing happened, but I wonder if the same thing's happened there.

Hmm...I think the fact that IA, Hero6, and QFMG all use the same kind of forum might have something to do with this...
Title: Re: The Hero6 Thread
Post by: Swift on April 23, 2006, 08:18:53 PM
You're most likely right, Jafar. Striker guessed that it's most likely an Invision hack that's targetted at its vulnerablities, since Invision Power Boards don't provide patches for free forums.

We're still investigating. I don't know how long it'll take for either Coco or PHattiE to look into this matter.

What is interesting to note is that the exe file that was sent out via emails to the QFMG forum members is the same one that the hacked Hero6 site was trying to send out to unpatched IE users when they attempt to view the site, and according to the logs from our visitors site, an admin had apparently tried mass mailing everyone using the admin panel a few days ago, using a very different IP address. The fortunate thing was that those messages were never sent, because that function doesn't work. Unfortunately, I don't have any copy of what was sent out so I can't check to see if it's the same one that was sent as QFMG emails. I think his account was hacked into, because I can't think of a reason why he would attempt to mass mail people, and the IPs don't match. That IP points to Estonia.

An html file with the name of sys7ech.html was found on the server side, with an "owned" type of message, which suggests that the hacker/s was/were from Germany.

Warning: Click only if you have a virus scanner, or are using a non-IE browser.

[edit]

Hmm, apparently some people did receive that email after all from forums@hero6.com with the following message: "Please, help our forum - traffmoney.biz/dl/loadadv606", with a live link and to an exe.

If you received such an email, delete it immediately.
Title: Re: The Hero6 Thread
Post by: Yonkey on April 24, 2006, 05:52:20 AM
Ugh.  When I clicked that I got at least 5 virus warnings and eventually it ended up freezing IE entirely. :P

It might be that the hacker has either direct access to the forum's template file, or access to the page that allows you to modify it.  The problem is, if it's a security hole in the software, changing the admin password probably won't stop them (since they were able to give themselves admin rights through the hole).

If Invision doesn't provide free security patches (which is a VERY bad business decision for them IMO), I would seriously consider converting your forum to another kind.  I use SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org) here.  It's pretty secure, free and they update pretty often.

Title: Re: The Hero6 Thread
Post by: Swift on April 25, 2006, 03:27:25 AM
Thanks. The hack has been removed, so that part's fixed. Took me forever to find the hack!

It was in the board wrapper all along.

Unfortunately, the forums are still down because we're planning to convert it to something more stable. We're seriously considering SMF.
Title: Re: The Hero6 Thread
Post by: Yonkey on April 25, 2006, 06:02:07 AM
Awesome! ;D

I'm not sure what version of Invision you have, but I noticed they have converters (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?converters) for both Invision 1.3 & under and Invision2 preview.  Remember to make a backup of everything (files and database) before you try converting it, just in case you run into problems during the conversion process. :)
Title: Re: The Hero6 Thread
Post by: Swift on April 25, 2006, 06:36:00 AM
It's Invision 1.3.1. Thanks for your help, Yonkey.
Title: Re: The Hero6 Thread
Post by: Yonkey on April 25, 2006, 06:51:15 AM
Cool.  I think the converter should still work (assuming 1.3.1 didn't change much from 1.3 final).  Also, that converter is for SMF 1.0.7.  There's a converter for Invision to SMF 1.1 RC2, but it's beta (as is that SMF version) so it's probably best to convert to 1.0.7 first and then upgrade from 1.0.7 to 1.1 later on once you know everything is fine.

1.0.7 is considered the more stable version, but it lacks some of the newer features that the 1.1 version has.  Both get updated for security patches, so you'll be fine in that sense.

I'm not sure if this is worth getting too enthusiastic over yet, if for no other reason than because of the history of unavoidable obstacles in the project's development. Nevertheless, this news is better than hearing nothing, and hopefully will prove to be a source for real optimism.
