Title: SoundFX
Post by: Louisiana Night on September 26, 2004, 02:10:41 PM
I was wondering, what the sound artists are using to make the sounds in the game.

Such as, are they using a microphone to record sounds(poor example=using a piece of wood, to make the sound of horses gallloping), special hardware, special software(like Nero Sound Editor), or do different artists, go about it differently? ???

Probably a combination of digital and mechanical sound fx creation (digital/digitally enhanced mechanical fx for the fancy stuff, plain old mechanical sound effects for the norm, such as doors closing*)

*You know using the miniture doors next to a microphone, old piano strings being scraped with a metal pole to create a good Dr. Who Tardis effect!
(The KQ IX team will look like the BBC radio's sound effects department crew before long!)

Yeah I'm interested about this too. We should get Chris down here to spill the beans...or at least attempt to get him too :p

One thing I know some games have done is used stock SFX that come on like a catalogued CD. Notice in lots of films or TV shows you ALWAYS here the same woman speaking on police radios and such.

Yeah, but I thought at least some of the sounds, needed to be unique. :-\

The most disturbing thing I've seen, that's related to people buying/getting sounds from the same place, is Doom.

Listen to some old movies(and maybe some new ones), with a bear in it. If the bear is shot, hurt, or scared, there's a good chance you'll hear a sound from Doom. The one where someone gets shot. :P

I think they might be using sound effects from an SFX library of some sort.  But we should really get Chris in here to tell us for sure.  :P

Well, be imaginative with your sound fx creations, that's what I say!  :)

Someone looking for me?  Well, unfortunately, in the sound dept., fx are probably at the bottom of the list.  After the score and voice acting, the sound effects usually go pretty much un-noticed (is that hyphenated?) (is that how you spell "hyphenated"?) Anyway, we will try our best not to use to many "Generic" sounds, like the slamming door, the telephone ring (though i don't think there are any phones) but i doubt we'll hold up productions to go record birds chirping... We will however try to customize the sounds as much as possible to the settings and objects.

That's about it for now.  I have to go stand out in the rain with  a mic for a couple of hours... (do microphones attract lightening? :-[)
