I'm not sure what the big deal is about the missing posts... soon before the site bit the big one, almost all the threads in OT had degenerated into almost identical random nonsense, so it's not exactly like a good chunk of the missing stuff is going to be very interesting to read. :P

Not exactly. There's a difference between threads that drift off-topic, but drift into *other* actual topics, and just random silliness. Right now there is a fair amount of both, but IMHO a goodly amount less of the latter than right before the most recent outage.

Hum. I guess the problem is that I'm a little unclear on how many sets of missing posts there are. I know the posts from this past August-September (October?) are still MIA, and I joined at some point in this past August. I didn't realize there were *more* missing posts from a more distant period of time.

I'm not talking about THAT crash. I'm talking about the very first crash of the OLD YaBB board (the one that came BEFORE vBulletin). I guess you have to be an old timer like myself to remember it :P
Now, most of the posts from the old YaBB board (those which were saved on the last backup of that board) are already in the archive, but those which weren't backed-up disappeared into oblivion :'(
As for the nonsensical nature of said posts, I still think they're less nonsensical than those made today. Like I said, that could be wishful thinking, but you have to remember there weren't as many people here back then, and those people were less willing to go on posting sprees just for their counts' sake ::)
