The genre is an odd creature, because, well...it's the "dead" genre that isn't really dead. There are still a LOT of games made that are adventure games, just not in quite the same sense as they once were. And the games sell quite well, too! It's just that a bigger deal is made out of games that are shooters or otherwise quite often, or RPGs, which are also a form of the adventure game.
Kinda like fantasy and science fiction movies. Everyone makes fun of them, they almost NEVER get oscars or anything, BUT...everyone goes to see them, loves them, they make a lot of money, and are among the most popular films out there right now. Examples? Star Wars, LOTR, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean (fantasy-like!), Star Trek, and so forth. All huge money-makers, well-loved and liked, and yet the genre is mocked by a lot of people. Well then folks, stop spending your cash on it :-P Silly hypocrites who don't know it.... ::)
The adventure genre *isn't* dead - it's quieter, and not as big as it once was perhaps, but is FAR from dead. Just check out www.justadventure.com (http://www.justadventure.com). They've got some good articles about how the genre is far from dead and the listing of games is interesting to look at - you might be surprised what you've been playing that's actually adventure! Like the recent and very popular Prince of Persia: Sands of Time game, for one example.
I've been to Just Adventure. It's full of people trying very hard to convince you the adventure genre *isn't* dead ::) this alone should raise a few eyebrows ;)
It's not that the genre is dead... it's just that so few adventure games are made nowdays, it's hardly worth the title "genre" anymore :-\
Well I went to that site. After looking at it, I thought a bit about it, I guess adventure gaming is not dead.
But unfortunately its very quiet, I haven't bought an adventure game in years, and it seems there are no "good" adventure games coming out. Nothing compared to old games such as KQ and all of its peers.

If you're looking for good Adventure Games, (with capitals!!), I know of a few. I really enjoyed playing "The Longest Journey". It's a fantastic game. Another adventure game that was very enjoyable, not to mention beautiful, is "Syberia". I haven't been able to buy Syberia II yet, but I can't wait. I'm sure it will be as wonderful as the first. Admittedly, they are not DIFFICULT games, but you need to think, and the puzzles are clever. The plots are deep and complex, with fantastic visuals, excellent voice acting and music, etc. etc. I haven't player Myst III or Uru, but I've read excellent reviews about them. I've heard Schizm and its sequel are excellent as well. And Broken Sword Three came out recently, which ALSO is supposed to be fantastic, though again, I haven't played it yet. This isn't even to mention all the Nancy Drew adventures that have been released, and the many others that I don' remember right now. Regardless, I do NOT believe adventure is dead, and I actually think it's having a bit of a come back. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Cheers
That's the difference between the adventure genre and the action genre - I bet you couldn't list evey action game that came out in the last couple of years in such a short post ;P

I'm not saying there are no good adventure games made nowdays - just that very few are made. I don't think less adventures are made because they're harder to make than action games. Action games have a much bigger market so that's what most manufacturers aim at, ignoring the "minority" of adventure fans :-\
Yeah, there's an endless supply of plot (look at all the books published every year) yet "the market" decides what sells. What bothers me a lot is that many business people focus *only* on the majority and no one else, thus leaving a lot of people in the dark.
That's capitalism for you. Why should game-making companies make adventure games when, for about the same price, they could make an action game that would sell 10 times better? :(
