Title: er, help?
Post by: Athreah on December 10, 2004, 01:33:57 PM
I realize that this info is probably already around here somewhere, but I can't seem to find it.  :-\

I have the KQ collection and am trying to run it on my Win 2000 machine.  The early games worked very well, but KV, KVI, and KVII won't run.  "The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS or Microsoft Windows applications." or some rubbish.
So, since I know someone else must have had this problem, what do I need to do?  Point me to the right thread?  Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm sure there are more, but these are some good threads for information about it. :)

KQ compatibility (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?board=10;action=display;threadid=1866)

Making KQs work with XP... (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?board=12;action=display;threadid=1540)

King's Quest and XP (http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?board=10;action=display;threadid=899)

NOTE
Despite most of the threads being about XP(not 2000), most of the information should still help you get them working in Windows2000.

:) All you need is DOSBox! It's a dos emulator and it plays all my KQ games great on my Windows XP.It's free! Go to the site and click on windows and download!
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1 (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1)

When you want to play open Dosbox and mount the directory that the game is installed in. For example I have my KQ5 game installed in my C: directory, so here's what I would type:
mount c c:\kq5 (press enter)
c: (press enter)
kq5 (press enter)

and the game begins!
Let me know if you need help!
