Title: here in the netherlands
Post by: Vipt on February 28, 2005, 10:11:46 AM
Amarinda, where in America do you come from? I'm half Dutch myself, and Grand Rapids, Michigan (where I live) is swarming with Dutchies. :P

I've lived in Milford, Michigan before (visited 'Holland' and everything ;) ) but currently-except-this-year I live in Arizona. I've also lived in Chicago and Fort Wayne, Indiana. My mom's from Kansas and my dad's from NL. He came over for college and the rest if history! :D I was actually born in Rome, Italy, so my legal papers are totally messed up. :P Crazy trying to get a valid birth certificate that ALL the countries will accept and issue legal papers for. ::) Took me half a year to get my Dutch passport.

Vipt, do you speak Dutch? Have you ever visited/lived in the Netherlands? For this lil country of 16mil people or so, there sure are a LOT of Dutchies on the 'net, aren't there. :) I find them everywhere I go! Always at least one group of Dutchies on every forum. Maybe because they actually learn English so well? Makes it a bit difficult to learn Dutch, since everyone here is willing and able to speak English.  ;)

Sorry if this is too off-topic!

Unfortunately, no. Not a lick of it, lol. Even my mom (where I get my Dutch half from) doesn't know any. My Grandmother supposedly knows some since she was born there, but I've never heard her speak it. However, my mom says she had a certain aunt who came to America but refused to learn English. I don't think they had much of a relationship...

As far as other forum members go, I know Rob (who goes by Brr) is Dutch, but he hasn't been around in a while. Too busy I guess. :-\ Also, a guy named Copycat who drops by every once in a while is Frisian, I think. Other than that, I'm not sure.

Ah, thanks for the correction. Yes, Dutch (or at least the Flemish dialect) is an official language of Belgium, so he probably speaks it, too.

See?! Seriously, Dutchies are a strong entity on the 'net. We're a whole country of geeks, heh heh!  ;D

And Vipt, don't feel bad, I didn't speak any until I came here, either, and what I can speak now sure ain't good. On top of that, my father, 2 uncles, an aunt, my grandparents, and much more extended family all speak Dutch. So I have noooo excuse. I have a Dutch last name. A Dutch nobility title. A Dutch passport. I've visited the Netherlands several times. It's downright sad that I don't have the language. But that's what I'm trying to accomplish now, so better late than never, eh? ;)

And, haha, I just noticed the allowed attachment files types... and the size limit... what kind of pdf/mpg/png/mp3 is 100 KB or less?!

ROTFL!! XD Come on, it's a common enough mistake... I mean, the Netherlands is a city in Norway, right? Or is it the other way around? Aw, who cares, it's all Europe, it's basically one country, right?  :suffer:

Hmmm, collision meshes, sounds messy.  ;)

I'm an American southern belle, but I might have a little Dutch in me on my mother's side. As well as Irish and English, maybe some Scottish. I don't speak any language but English and a few words in Spanish. I mostly forgot the Spanish I learned in high school. Anyway, I love Amarinda's paintings. The one with Valanice was funny. I thought she wore a slip under her dress.

Omigod. B'RRR IS BACK?!? Are you kidding me?!?  :o

I have a friend who is Flemish. Her name is Sieglinde; even though I don't understand, she's spoken to me in Flemish--and it is a beautiful language.

Actually, there's no such thing as the Flemish language, unless you want to count our way of talking Dutch Flemish. Can you tell me what town (or if she doesn't want to disclose that information, she can just give her provincie) she's from, so I can confirm my suspicions about her region are right (since you called it a beautiful language I have a hunch she's a bit east from my location)? 8)
