Title: King's Quest Odd Facts
Post by: koko_99_2001 on August 05, 2005, 08:02:02 AM
Jesse came up with this idea (and most of the facts), but I stepped up to the plate to create a thread about it :P Anyway, anyone notice the number of islands in the King's Quest series?

KQ 1: Get to island via eagle
KQ 2: Get to island via fish.
KQ 4: Get to island via swimming or jumping or placing board.
KQ 5: Get to islands via boat
KQ 6: Get to islands via magic map.
KQ 7: No islands, but get to Etheria via horse. Or maybe that rock you hop on when the river is still mud. :beach:
MoE: Get to island in the sky via portals

What other weird/odd KQ facts have you seen in the series?

Most people probably know these:

Alexander was voiced by Robbie Benson, the same voice actor who played the Beast in Beauty and the Beast.

The pawn shop owner in KQ6 is one of the few persons of color in the King's Quest series.  (Lolotte does not count.  :P)

KQ2: Looking in the hole in the rock on the top of the mountain shows a quick preview of Space Quest I. Also, the Batmobile from the original 60's Batman series occasionally comes out of Hagatha's cave. And finally, the game's title "Romancing the Throne" was taken from an 80's Indiana Jones style movie called "Romancing the Stone".

Titles like that are everywhere.

KQ5: Absences makes the heart go yonder
KQ6: Heir Today Gone Tommorrow (which by the way is the name of a hair salon (hair today gone tomorrow)
KQ7: The Princeless Bride (The Princess Bride A GREAT movie)

For King's Quest 7 I thought Valenice had to go to an island with that lady in a block of ice.  :P

Yeah. That's true. Valenice did have to go to the island in dreamland. I agree with Awesomeaspossum, the movie the princess Bride is incredible. What I also noticed is that if you play KQ7 through, look at the credits. Almost everyone has multiple roles especially these two guys: Joe Paulino (The jeweler troll, The spider, Count Tsepish,Mr. Nibbler,) and Roger Jackson (Cuddles, The kangaroo rat, All three heads of the hydra plant, Snake oil salesman, Ghoul Kid 1), also notice, Carol Bach y Rita plays Valenice, she also plays Lady Ceres. First sign of madness...

I agree with Deloria, The graphics are excellent and the storyline is Great. Personally I have never watched the Princess bride, but it sounds like a good film.  ;)

what's up with all the "heir" titles? It seems that every game with Alexander has "heir" in the title. Heir today, gone tomorrow, to heir is human... come on, get some originality!

Yeah it is. My fav. part is when you enter Falderal you can see Count Fifi De Yipyap chasing his tail. At the end of the sequence when he finishes talking to Valenice he finally catches and bites it. I used to have a dog who did that, even when it hurt her when she bit into it she kept at it.

I talked to the Mockingbird 50 times and these are the insults he spit out:
Insults
1.   You smell like a pair of armoured trousers after a hundred years war.
2.   Cover your face your scaring the horses.
3.   When you were born the Midwife slapped your Mother.
4.   You must have fallen out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.
5.   When you were a kid, your mom had to tie a leg of mutton around your neck to get the dogs to play with you.
6.   Whoa, either the plague wagon just drove by or you really need a bath.
7.   Your parents tried to throw you to the wolves but the wolves threw you back.
8.   Is that your face or are you eating a mincemeat pie?
9.   When you were born the midwife saved the bathwater and threw you out the window.
10.   If you were on fire I wouldn’t lay an egg on you to put you out.
11.   Is that your nose or are you eating a turnip.
12.   Most babies are found under a cabbage leaf, you were found under a stinkweed.
13.   You smell so bad even the pig boy avoids your company.
14.   You’re so ugly that you have to sneak up on a glass of water.
15.   Was your mother frightened by a warthog, when she was carrying you?
16.   Did your parents lose a bet with an evil magician?
17.   You’re so dumb the village idiot will not ask you for directions.
18.   Only your varicose veins save you from being completely colourless.
19.   You are so dumb that you cannot even entertain a dope.
20.   You light up the room whenever you leave it.
21.   You are almost as exciting as a fat lap dog right after dinner.
22.   Your mouth is do big you can whisper in your own ear.
23.   You are so boring even your own shadow will not keep you company.
24.   The only thing that can stay in your head for more than an hour is a cold.
25.   You cannot count to twenty without taking your shoes off.
26.    The only way you could broaden your mind is to put it under a wagon wheel.
27.   When there is an idea in your head it is in solitary confinement.
28.   If you had a little more sense you would be a halfwit.
29.   When you walk into a room, the mice scream and jump on chairs.
30.   The day you arrived, your father went out and shot the stork.
31.   You have the face of a saint, a Saint Bernard.
32.    You have a very striking face. How many times have you been struck there anyway?
33.   You must not be two-faced, because if you had two then why would you be wearing that one?
34.   Why don’t you send your wits out to be sharpened?
35.   Are you going on a trip? You sure have big bags under your eyes.
36.   I never forget a face, but in your case I will make an exception.
37.   I have two minutes to kill, tell me everything you know.
38.   You have a pretty, little head. For a head it is pretty little.
39.   When your time comes thousands of people will attend your funeral, to make sure that you are really dead!
40.   Is that your head or is your neck blowing a bubble?
41.   When you arrived, the stork flew around your house for a week, before he had the nerve to drop you off.
42.   Be careful not to let your mind wander, it is too little to go out alone.
43.   You have a face like a flower, a cauliflower.
44.   I feel sorry for your little mind, all alone in that big fat head!
45.   Are those your ears or flyswatters?
46.   Your parents almost lost you as a child unfortunately they did not take you far enough into the woods.
47.   Didn’t I meet you in a nightmare?
48.   Why don’t you go hang around with the village idiot so that you have someone to look up to?
49.   You must be a big cheese, you certainly smell like one.
50.   Keep those legs covered, the chicken killer is in town.

I don't think so... they listed Aphrodite, Ceres, and a few other godess'  even though Aphrodite is called Venus in Roman mythology and Percepherus (or something like that) is Ceres' Greek mythology name.
Also: KQ6=Death (sounds too religious to be mythology about his being 'chained to the throne whilst still a man')
        KQ7=Roman Mythology (Ceres and Attis)
MoE=Egyptian Mythology (The underworld has the egyptians death god as it's ruler
QFG4=Transylvanien Mythology (sort of)
QFG5=Hades (Greek Mythology)
Funny how Sierra jumps back and forth isn't it?

If you put the cheese in Mordack's Machine without the wands, Cedric won't be there to save you, even if you did help him back on Harpie Island. I don't know if the death message is different though. (I'm too nice to leav Cedric :P )

Well you can turn the audio off and that solves one problem. Then you can fail just keep pushing enter to keep him from speaking and pointing out that there's a poisonous snake on the screen (as if you couldn't see it). He isn't useless, he saves you from Mordack remember?

Does anyone else remember the old "Edge of the screen trick"? (When somethings coming, run off the screen and it won't trouble you.)
I noticed that it doesn't work on the Yeti in KQ5, or the Ogre in KQ4 if you go south from his house. You still have a chance to escape the Ogre, though. Just try to run from the Yeti. :P

You know how slow he moves trying to get you on his screen? That must've been a workout, 'cause he charges into the next screen grabs you, and I think he even drags you back to his lair. You don't even have a chance to escape, last I checked.

I made up something about Cedric and King Graham:

Graham: Cedric, how many licks does it take to get to the chocolately center of a tootsie pop?
Cedric: OOOooo Graham I'm not sure let me see.....1.....2.....*shocked expression*GRAHAM! WATCH OUT A POOIIISONOUS SNAKE!!!!

Actually, Ceres' name in Greek mythology is Demeter (Persephone is Demeter's daughter). The reason I said they may have gotten confused is that Roman gods are basically the same as the Greek ones, only with different names - sometimes people can't tell which name is from which mythology :-\

Quote from: Deloria on November 09, 2005, 06:34:57 AMAlso: KQ6=Death (sounds too religious to be mythology about his being 'chained to the throne whilst still a man'

I don't know if the KQ6 Lord of the Dead is from any mythology, but the Archdruid says they call him Samhain, which is taken from the Celtic mythology (figures, since the druids are Celtic). According to this article (http://www.religioustolerance.org/hallo_sa.htm) though, Samhain is just a Celtic festival and not really the Lord of the Dead in Celtic Mythology.

Quote from: Deloria on November 09, 2005, 06:34:57 AMKQ7=Roman Mythology (Ceres and Attis)

Actually, the name 'Attis' is from the Greek mythology, but there Attis (http://homepage.mac.com/cparada/GML/Attis.html) isn't the Lord of the Hunt, or anything like the KQ7 character :S

Quote from: Deloria on November 09, 2005, 06:34:57 AM
MoE=Egyptian Mythology (The underworld has the egyptians death god as it's ruler

The ruler of MOE's Dimension of Death is named Azrael, which is the angel of death in Islamic-Judeo-Christian mythology. As for the character itself, I'd say he's more like Hades, what with Charon being there and all :-\

Heheh, Cassima (and) the jailbird ;P

I don't think it's intentional though, they probably used the name Sing Sing because it sounds Chinese, and the nightingale is from the fairytale about the nightingale and the emporer of China ;)

Most of them have home, like Dr. Cadaver. Others are really undead and don't need to sleep, like Lady Tsepish.

Normal people? We're talking about Eldritch, there are fae and trolls and animals. Animals certainly don't get graves with tombstones and Dr. Cadavers talking cat also doesn't need to sleep. Fae don't retire to the undead, if they do die. Trolls won'tr be buried in Ooga Booga land anyway because all Ooga Booga-yites kill any troll who shows their face above ground, after they kill them, they probably WON'T bother with the burial, becuase they could be eaten.

Because it's the wrong land/game. In the KQ universe, there is a geographical/temporal division of the dead - those who die in the Land of the Green Isles (or in KQ6) get to go to the Land of the Dead. Those who die in Daventry (or in MOE) go to the Dimension of Death, and those who die everywhere else just Restore, Restart or Quit ;P

Quote from: Deloria on December 06, 2005, 10:05:12 AMMost of them have home, like Dr. Cadaver. Others are really undead and don't need to sleep, like Lady Tsepish.

And some just can't afford the rent, so they sleep in their graves. That's why they get so pissed off when you step on it and wake them up :P

QuoteBecause it's the wrong land/game.
Oh, so true!  ;)

I wonder if this was deliberate. In KQ5, Graham helps elderly shoe makers (a fairytale reference) at one point in the game. One of Graham's major allies in the game is named Crispin. The patron saint of shoe makers is....St Crispin

You can't revive him, vultures tore him apart! They ate him, he has long since been digested and lies in many different places and in about 300 pieces. Just PLEASE don't even try to revive him.  :P

Actually, that was Cedric's twin brother, Fredrick. Cedric was too scared to go anywhere near an Al Lowe game. :P
