I had the 1997 Kings Quest compilation, and I could never beat KQIII, even with walkthroughs. The instructions to make a couple of the spells (I think invisibility was one) I had in my manual simply weren't the instructions the game wanted, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get past it, and the game was never beat.
Did this every happen to anyone else?
Actually, KQ3 was the one I beat without hints. XD *is illogical*
I DO recall something about some of the words being mixed up in the manual (hither and thither come to mind.) As long as you bought the game legally, I don't see the harm in getting a few of the incantations from other people/the internet... :-\

Hmmm... I did buy it legally (or rather, my mom did, as I was . I'm gonna go look for itl. But yeah, a mix up in the words makes sense.
But I swear, I was looking through thesaures for months.
KQ III was very picky about the spells. You needed to get them exactly right. I think in the 1997 compilation some of the spells were slightly mixed up. I had the original KQ III and did not have a problem with the spells unless I made a user error. ;)
Yeah, downloading manuals if you own the game is no big deal. :P Especially if it's necessary to beat them.
I had to use a walkthrough for some of it.
[spoiler]
*remembers becoming invisible where you have to save Rosella too soon.*
UGHH! I would always turn visible when I was in front of him! >:(
I always had trouble getting certain ingredients like the eagle's feather. :P It once took me 30 tries.
There's also a similar problem with the cat cookie spell, it says "Pat the cookie" instead of something else. :P
In the invisibility spell, you need to make sure you capitalize the correct words and make sure you use commas! The game would never let me get past it without resorting to grammar :P
That's odd. I never had to use commas or capitalization. :S
For its time, I'll bet KQ III was PRETTY hard for it's time (of course, I was born 6 years after the game was released, so I can't really say it with much meaning :P). This game and KQ IV are two of the only games that I know of where the game's internal clock actually matters.
I thought KQ III the hardest of the "8". I don't remember too much of the spells, but I do know what you're all talking about. I got a legal copy of the games...

Maybe that's why you're so good at grammar! ;)
I don't think I ever had to capitalize anything or add commas. :-\
And I'm still good at grammar... ;P
I just remembered it, it's "Mold the cookie" instead of "Pat the cookie", it's correct in the Companion and in the Compilation versions of the manual, but in the original (paper manual, not glossy :P) it would always kill you. I still had to use commas in the Brew Of Storms spell, though. :P

Possibly :P, although. I have to be corrected quite frequently so I wouldn't call myself good. :P Still, I like thinking that KQ helped me.:P
Maybe that was roberta's intention at heart... ::)

Perhaps. :) At any rate, I just remembered what the problem was. In the glossy manual (and in the Companion) this problem was corrected. I'm the paper manual it says "Pat the cookie" instead of "Mold the Cookie", I still had to use commas in the Storm Brew spell, though. (Speaking of which, did anyone ever try that out on the ship ;P?)
I did! XD For some reason, I didn't make it to shore alive. :P

I just learned a month or so ago that Manannan's name is pronounced ManANNan instead of MANannan. XD
I always knew that! :P
Well there wasn't exactly a pronunciation guide with KQ3. ;P

We're talking about using hte storm brew on the ship. ;)
Rosella, did you play KQ5 with or without speech? I think you can hear how it's pronounced there.
I've always pronounced it as "MaNANnan"
Same! I don't really know what the storm brew is, so yeah...
