Title: Scary and Creepy Points
Post by: TheReturnofDMD on May 29, 2006, 10:01:51 PM
Hi

Were there ever any points within the King's Quest series that scared you or startled you or just plain creeped you out? For me, KQ4 in general held this generally creepy/spooky aura and still does...Wandering around that gloomy, empty countryside, it was all sort of creepy. And sometimes my sound would mess up and I'd get this eerie humming sound like the sounds in suspense or supernatural movies. Don't know if anyone else felt the same vibe from KQ4...Also, whenever the blue henchmen in KQ5 comes out with the music that accompanies him, it always makes me jump...What about the rest of you?

KQ4 had alot of those moments...the cave with the Troll, the Ogre's house, the zombies, and Lollotte's castle. Mordack's castle was creepy too, but I don't think the Land of the Dead is that bad unless you get that one unique death...*shudders*

*shudders at the thought of KQ4* Scary times... Scary times... which death is it you're talking about?

Touch the Lord of the Dead, don't challenge the Lord of the Dead, or screw up when you challenge the Lord of the Dead. Not reccomended for the faint of heart. :P

Oh. Is that KQ6? The death messages were hilarious in that game!

Yeah, though a few deaths weren't like the others...Unique Deaths, I call them. (Though technically you only die in one of them)

... I'd love to see a collection of these deaths in a continuous trailer at the movies...  ::)

For me it was the toll's cave.

Toll's cave... I don't seem to remember that... Then again, it's been about ten full years since I've actually played KQ4 for real. Which means I was 4 years old...

I really disliked those random things that jump out at you and steal your inventory in KQ1 & 2. :P

Mordack's Castle was probably the creepiest part of KQ5 for me, the forest was pretty creepy too.

In KQ6, it had to be the Realm of the Dead with those random souls that want to hug you. ;P

KQ7 had a few creepy points in Ooga Booga Land, but in general, they weren't that bad. XD

Ugh. I hated the boogyman.

Same. The boogeyman was scary! (In the new sense of the word!)

*Double shudders* The thought is so scary!

I hated anything that sprung out at you randomly. The things that chased you in 1 and 2 scared me to death because I was never expecting it. XD Falling into water in 1 and 2 was also scary, because I never could figure out how to swim. :P The Ogre scared me to death, and I remember wanting to have a parent in the room so I could play it, even in broad daylight. XD

The ogre scared me too, even when I only HEARD about him in KQ4.  My friend was playing the game and he told me about this ogre and how he kept dying when he ran in to him around his house.  We were on the phone and I was like "kill him with your sword!"  He replied, "you can't.  you're a princess without any weapons.  Once the ogre sees you, he chases you and grabs you by the hair and drags you off to his stew pot!"  I had never heard of or seen such a horrific thing in a game, so my imagination ran off the deep end of this monstrous ogre dragging a poor girl around by her braids!  So yeah, that's my story  :P  ...maybe that's why I'm such a fan of discovering every last one of Rosella's perils  ???

Welcome back Daphne! :D

Ugh...I remember that ogre, he was horrible, almost as bad as the ogress.

When I first started playing KQIII not knowing when Manannan was going to show up always creeped me out.  So not a specific point, but that general sense.  Of course, then you figure out that it's like 15 minute intervals and you can pretty much get everything in two trips and beat the game in like an hour, lol.

So for me, I think it was Mordack's castle that creeped me out the most.  At least in KQVI you could see the things in the Land of the Dead that would kill you--In V you never knew when Mordack or the blue thing would pop up!

Actually, it's 25 minute intervals and I don't think you can beat the game in under 1:50 :P

I usually got everything in one trip. XD

I did too. But Manannan needs to be gone once, asleep once, you need to wait for the ship to Daventry, which, together is 75 minutes (1 hour and 15) plus the rest of the gameplay (trial and error stuff1the spells)

Why does he need to be asleep? I just went out, got everything, did all of the spells, put everything back, waited for him to come back, and kittified him. :P

I always just got what I needed for the cookieh as soon as he left, made it, and waited for him to come back before getting the rest of the stuff. Better safe then sorry. :P

Well my "Get everything as fast as possible" plan works for me, so it's still safe. :P

KQIII was the hardest and scariest KQ... Or is that five... The fact that I was only like five or something makes the idea of him popping up randomly scare me half to death. I remeber playking KQV and after had such a fright to go to sleep. But ironically, after playing and watching Mask of Eternity, I had no fright at all. XD And that was filled with blood galore! (And not to mention mushrooms and coins from the creatures. And occasionally a few potions... I never knew that's what monsters consisted of!) The thought of an ogre dragging you away does not bring pleasant thoughts to my mind! Especially a Princess, with long pig-tails, and likely getting her head all bloody from the dragging. *Shudders fifty times in a minute*

when i was a kid, i couldn't play any of them without my dad. and the detailed maps he'd drawn. 3 was hard, but I think 4 and 5 scared me the worst. The troll, the ogre(he was the worst!), all manner of scaryness! i got so nervous playing!

KQ5 was a nightmare for me when I was younger, particularly Mordack appearing out of nowhere and doing his strangulation spell on Graham. In fact, Sierra games in general scared me so badly that I refused to play them back then.

Nowadays I've come to appreciate the humorous side of death, but there's still some moderately scary bits, like the witches in KQ4... that creepy way they walk as well as the music... *shudders* I remember Roberta Williams once saying she felt the witches tossing Rosella in the cauldron somehow felt like a non-feminine way to die.

But nothing beats the sheer mind-numbing horror of the Lord Of The Dead's skeletonization of Alexander.

I don't know why, but the blue monster from KQV in Mordack's Castle always creeped me out.  :S

The heap space thing always creeped me out... :o

"But, I almost beat Mordack!"

I so want to try every possible death but the heap space thing won't let me after the first two. XD

Aw. :P I never had that problem.

I also hated Graham's scream whenever he fell down somewhere, it was so loud.

I found that scream entertaining. XD

The boogeyman was the best, of course. He had probably the creepiest voice from anyone in any of the games.

But yeah, KQ4 had some good dark areas also...but they were all frustrating as hell because half the time they were unbeatable.
