Title: Welcome back!
Post by: BoardnationArchive on October 25, 2003, 03:37:16 PM
Yonkey:
Welcome to the Temporary KQIX Forums!

We'll be using these free forums as a temporary substitute until the real forum comes back online.  I can't transfer anyone's posts because I don't even have access to the forum files.

However, once the old forums are back up, I believe there is a way to import YaBB, so all posts made should be able to be transferred and count towards your post count!

So... why were we offline for almost a month??  Well, from what I heard, it turns out the server we were on reached the maximum transfer bandwidth limit of... ONE TERABYTE!! WOOOOO HOOOOO!!!

We can't take all the credit/blame though because there are many other domains and websites hosted on that same server.  I'm not even sure what the most bandwidth intensive part of the kq9 site is!

Oh well, we are now on an alternate server which is linked with the same domain.  So, once our old server comes back up, the site will seamlessly transfer to that one.

Ok, that's enough from me... let's get these brand spanking new forums dirty.

Excellent!!! The KQ9 forum is back in business

To all those who were once frequent posters on the old forum welcome back.  For those just joining us, welcome aboard.

A lot of interesting things have been developing on the KQ9 project in the absence of the site.  Ironically, the time we were down has been our most productive time EVER!

Well you'll find out about the new things coming soon enough.  Until then start posting and have fun.

Yay, the forums are back up! Whoo! I missed you guys! (sniffle) GROUP HUG!

...*ahem*

Rick: I can't wait to see updates to the rest of the site, to see what you guys have been cooking up for us.

Cesar: Somehow, I don't think you're going to get any sympathy from these folks.

Yonkey: One terabyte? Yikes, I don't even want to think about that number. That's a lot of zeros. But I find it odd that the server even would run into a bandwidth limit. Why doesn't your old host have it's own backups for those occasions?

And I was going to mention that you'd probably be able to transfer posts made here to the old forums once they were back up, but I forgot to. And it was me that suggested these forums, just for the record.

Peace & Luv, Liz

THANKS JEYSIE!!!!!
Actually we might not be able to transfer posts because it has no export feature.    Unless they removed it on purpose because the boards are free??

It's entirely possible... you maybe could e-mail the support people about it. I, too, had just supposed you might be able to port posts based on the fact that these boards are run on YaBB software.

Still, it's better than no forum at all, or one with ads or crappy thread organization. (If I hadn't been so busy I would have offered to try and toss up a temp forum on my own website server, but such is life, I guess.) Hopefully you'll be able to get the old forum back up soon, anyway.

Let's see how persistent this board's cookie is. Hello and goodnight!

Title: Re:Welcome back!

Yonkey:
Actually, transferring the post count is WAY easier than the posts.

But Storm's right, this board doesn't have an export feature.  It's free, you can't expect everything!  So the posts themselves probably won't be transferred... unless I do it the old fashioned way (copy and paste).

We should make a poll, Should Yonkey copy and paste every post to the other forum?
I have a feeling the majority of people would say yes.
Title: Re:Welcome back!

Yonkey:
Even then, I don't think it's possible for even me to post under someone else's account name.  So I'm not 100% sure how the copy and paste thing would work.  A thread with only my name on each post kind of defeats the whole purpose of transferring it.

Since when did Cesar become R. Kelly?

I guess that would be the only way to do it... oh and you can forget about emoticons if I'm gonna be copying and pasting

Nah, just leave it.
We got used to the loss of the posts from the old board, we'll get used to losing these posts as well.
Cut & Paste would be too much work for Yonkey, especially if he plans to post them like regular posts, under their creator's name.

Yonkey -
I still haven't lost hope of seeing at least "selected bits" of the old board posted, especially the fan-fiction posts

Those posts aren't really lost.  Rich has still them on his computer.  It's just up to me one of these days to figure out how to transfer them.
Title: Re:Welcome back!

Jeysie:
You could just have an archived posts section, with stuff just copied and pasted into threads under an "archived post" username, but with a short text note in each message of who wrote it. We obviously won't be able to continue the discussions in those threads, but at least it'll be available, and we can always make new threads based on the info.

Or, we could just leave this board up indefinitely, and we forum members could be nice to you and port over whatever info we think is important into new threads ourselves.

Peace & Luv, Liz

Seriously, I think the fan fiction topic is the one I missed the most when the old board went down. It's the one thing on the forum that's worth reading even after a long time.

Jeysie's idea of an archive sounds good to me... I've seen boards that have such a thing

Heh. Well, as long as you think stuff is fixed. It got annoying having checking time stamps as the only method of telling if there were new posts, and having to refresh pages constantly to see those new posts. Although I would point out that YaBB SE and phpBB are free, and both allow exporting and importing.

I think the forum's problem with new postings has to do with cookie problems.  I notice these forums update the new trigger as soon as you hit the back button!  So I'm sure it's not a hard bug for them to fix if it's STILL there.

It's not really the cost that I don't like.. I mean, yeah that plays a role.  But I'd rather have a forum that has all the features we need than having one just cuz it's free.  The thing about this not being hosted on our server is a major plus.  Oh, and YaBB SE's forum registration is "out of order"... lol

Anyway, I'll discuss it with Rich tonight (since he's the one who paid for this server)!

Hee. Well, it's your money and server... if we will have a working bug-free forum I'm not going to complain. Just pointing out the possibilities. I didn't even know that you had to register the YaBB SE software, though... I thought you could just download it, install it on your server, and go. Hmm. I was thinking of maybe creating a message board for one of my websites someday, so this has me curious. And most of the forum software out there is pretty customizable, albeit with the addition of mods in some cases.

Yonkey:
Yep, vBulletin has a whole website dedicated to mods/hacks.  There are a few there that sound actually pretty useful!

Now that I'm officially the webmaster (well, on this server at least) I can do all sorts of web-related updates, which includes forum modding, upgrading and maintenance.

And yeah, one of my career goals is to develop things that are bug free  but I'm more concerned with having at least same features we had with the old forum.  The only way to guarentee that is to use vBulletin and the only way to check to see if YaBB or phpBB have the same features is to install it and test it out yourself.  When I say features, I mean both the user ones and the admin ones.  Some sites have demo forums, but they don't allow you to use any of the admin ones.

So, I could install both boards and see, but I'm not sure if it's worth all the hassle, especially if their registration tool is broken.  The phpBB doesn't specifically say it can import from YaBB or vBulletin.. it just says it supports any php or SQL database.  I'm not sure if importing the SQL db itself would be enough to keep the posting formatting and emoticons intact.  I guess the only way to do it is to try and see.

Or rather, finding the time to download, install, test it and see.

Anyone know if the threads back then kept going off-topic or did they mainly stick to the same one?

Well, since Mango and Dragon didn't join unil the new forum was already up, I'm guessing we pretty much sticked to the original topic. Although,, my memory is no longer as good as it was when I still went to school, so I might be wrong. Anyway, since they didn't post on those boards, and I only go off-topic in response to someone else, I'm gueesting there was no off-topic-ing.

Quote:Or rather, finding the time

You see, that's my problem exactly, as far as posting on these forums is concerned and making lots of post to up my post-count. I just [b[don't have the time[/b]. :/

PS: Since Justadventure is also YaBB, I tried using that nick to log in on this board, but it seems Yabb doesn't do in Global usernames, as EZboard does, because that username wasn't known.
Now, on to the off-topic foru!  (but first, I need my avatar back!
