Title: Question About Wallpapers
Post by: TheReturnofDMD on July 31, 2006, 05:04:47 AM
Hey

First off I'm amazed. You guys have really done 110%, and put all your ''all'' into this and the quality of your work reflects it, and it's amazing for me as a fan to see how the project has come in the three years that I've been following it. I know I'm not here as long as some other members, but I can still remember when you guys first had the Four Winds newsletters up  :P. I'm excited guys!
Anyway...I have a few questions about the wallpapers. They're very very good and very realistic and I was wondering:
1) Which member of the team designed them?
2) Are the full-body shots of Rosella, Graham, Alex and Valanice their final depiction in the game, like...is this how their going to actually look in game? Or is that just an artful depiction of them? BTW Alex looks very, very angry and very cool  8)
3) A question related to question 2 but has their been any changes in the character's appearences within the game? Like for example Queen Valanice looks significantly different in the wall papers than from how she's previously  been depicted in past wall-papers, screenshots and the trailer....

If that is really how they are going to look in game than I must say WOW! They're very very realistic and on-par with today's commercial games.

Hi there! Thank you for your compliments, they're very encouraging. I'm Jon Stoll (Lead Characters Artist). I'm just one of the artists who is responsible for the way the characters look in these wallpapers. I personally did not create these wallpapers, however, I did design these main characters in particular and textured/revised them once they were modeled. The person who produced these amazing wallpapers, though,  is my teamate, Karen Soroe. She did an outstanding job completing these and she deserves much praise for it. As for the look of the characters (as far as I know), they will look very similar in-game to how they appear in the wallpapers. Thank you again for your passion and support!

Yeah, they will look like that pretty much, except for the lighting.

And Valanice, like all the other main characters in the game, use different vestments. That's why you saw her in a purple dress and now in a green one. She'll be wearing both.

Rosella was majorly revamped since the last time we showed her in the wallpaper.

Yup!  There was actually some major discussion about this within the team.  Whether we should use a 3D exported model, or a polished up Maya one.  On one hand, there's the realism of what you see is what you get, in terms of gameplay.  On the other hand, this is a wallpaper and not a screenshot, so it is allowed to be higher quality than the in-game version.

And there you have the result.  The 3D exported model on the left and a high-res rendered one on the right. ;D

Excellent work, team! :)

You lost me...Sorry if I sound dumb or annoying, but I really don't understand all the talk about 3D exported models and the like, I've never had experience with graphics or anything like that...So, are the character full-body shots on the left actually lifted from the game, like they are the actual character graphics or are they just one of the team artist's painted representations of how the characters will look? And last question but do you mean that the full body shots at left and the facial closeup at right are from two different engine versions of the character's appearence?

The full body is "lifted from the game", as you put it, while the facial closeup is a hi-res render. A render is when the computer "takes a picture" of a 3D model or landscape. In the game, the computer has to "render on the fly", thus it can't produce as high of quality graphics. If it did, you'd never get anywhere!

actually, Rosella is taken right from the actual model. Alex, Graham and Valanice are rendered. Valanice was lit with a different technique. This is for body shots.

For face close ups, they were all rendered, and then painted on top.

Btw Alexander looks badass (sorry if I'm not allowed to say that) but seriously he looks ready to kick some butt.

Last night I saw some posts on here with links to KQ9 screencaps and I can't for the life of me refind them.

I was planning of making a KQ9 wallpaper for myself, but can't find the links to those screencaps.  If anyone can help me, I'd totally appreciate it

Looks good, Jen, except the logo says "KQIX" instead of "TSL". :P

Looks good. I would suggest you place Rosella's layer behind Conner's layer because of the size and depth but otherwise it looks great.

I remade the wallpaper, and honestly I think it turned out better.  I blacked out the KQIX and with the font AGATHA wrote The Silver Lining

I think I even did better on positioning the people:)

here's the wallpaper: http://i9.tinypic.com/34g7on8.jpg (http://i9.tinypic.com/34g7on8.jpg)

I also uploaded the PSDs of the characters, and three versions of the logo (logo is the original blank version, logo2 is the blank logo with the words The Silver Lining in gold letter, and logo3 is just like logo2, except I added the text effect that I used in the wallpaper
here are the PSDs:

Cassima - http://jenjenzorz.googlepages.com/Cassima.psd (http://jenjenzorz.googlepages.com/Cassima.psd)
Edgar - http://jenjenzorz.googlepages.com/Edgar.psd (http://jenjenzorz.googlepages.com/Edgar.psd)

If you'd like to use the actual TSL logo, you can actually use the one from the top of our site:
