Yeah, I noticed that too! Hilarious! Though it is kinda intersting to look back at those two posts that "name the smilies"... maybe he should give the names to the rest of them. ;)

Post by: Oldbushie on October 29, 2003, 09:51:04 AM
Was that in the original poll? Cuz the poll has different results now...

edit: Lol! I like the "Suffer!" box that shows up, didn't notice it before as I use Opera and it doesn't show everything. :(
Title: Re:Who will die?
Post by: Jeysie on October 29, 2003, 10:03:49 AM
The reason why Opera doesn't show anything is because the "suffer" bit is the ALT text for the image. Opera and Mozilla only show the ALT text when images are turned off, whereas IE shows it even when images are shown. The proper way to get it to show up everywhere would be to use the TITLE attribute on the image. Then Opera and Mozilla will show the TITLE text, and IE will show the TITLE text instead of the ALT text. You could get really crazy with it, while not goofing up the real purpose for those with images turned off... "Suffer heathens, for I am a god and you are all just little peasants!"... OK, maybe not. ;)

Geez... I can't believe how much useless web knowledge is crammed into my head, now. I think my brain is going to melt before my redesign is done. :P

No, I mean when you move the mouse over the icons when selecting them from the "Add Smilies" area while replying. It has nothing to do with ALT images.

Edit: never mind, I got what you were saying. So the mouseover displays alternate text in IE then...

Quote from: oldbushie on October 29, 2003, 10:45:20 AMEdit: never mind, I got what you were saying. So the mouseover displays alternate text in IE then...

Yep. Essentially, the ALT text should be a replacement for the *function* of the image if you were browsing with images off. So, IMHO the proper ALT text for the basic smiley, for instance, should be the usual : ), not "smiley". (A better but non-forum related example would be someone using an image for a list bullet. Good ALT text for a bullet image would be "*" not something like "little red dot".)

(Incidentally, the suffer icon is the only one that has ALT text in the message bodies themselves... bah.)

Sometime, when you're feeling a desire to waste a bit of time, spend a day just going around the web either with images turned off, or preferably with a text browser like Lynx (http://lynx.browser.org/)... it's a real eye-opener, at times.

The TITLE text, on the other hand, can be used to pop-up a toolbox saying whatever you want, although I think the best use would be for an explanation of the purpose of or a comment about the image. So in this case, "smiley" might be a good choice for TITLE text, although I think I'd go for something like "(smile)", instead.

The TITLE attribute can be used in links as well, for giving a little info about the link. Ideally, most of the link's meaning should be apparent from it's context or the words used for linking, but it sometimes doesn't hurt to add a little addendum. TITLE might be applicable as an attribute for other elements as well, I'm not sure off-hand.

Gah, now I've gone off-topic. I need to stop letting my geek cells take me over. ;)

I don't know about Opera, but when I move the mouse over the smilies, in the status bar I can see the code that will be used for tha smiley.

For example: the "Smiley" icon would say javascript:replaceText(': )'), so from there I would know it represents the : ) that would be typed in.  If the ALT text was the same as the code, it may be difficult to distinguish what code goes for what icon.  I think seeing a tooltip with two colons and a right bracket wouldn't be as clear as seeing "Roll Eyes".

The sufer one doesn't show its code in the status bar, so I guess in that case it would be better to have the code there.  But, everyone must know the code for it by now!  :suffer:  ;D

Blast it, you're making me go more off-topic! ;)

OK, here's more of a breakdown. The javascript:replaceText(': )') is simply the "address" of the smiley script, as in (a href="javascript:replaceText(': )')) In Opera I see "Address: javascript:replaceText(': )')" in a tooltip. IE shows it in the status bar.

The reason why you don't see the code for the suffer smiley is because it's not set up to replace a certain bit of emoticon text... it has it's own special text: : suffer : The suffer script in the "Add Smilies" spot simply calls a function to place the : suffer : code for you, whereas the other smiley scripts are global functions, designed to replace any normal emoticons you type no matter what... those special "Add Smilies" options are just for convenience if you want a specific smiley. At least, I think that's how it should work.

Now, if you added ALT text to the images, IE would show the ALT text in a tooltip, and still show the script address in the status bar. Opera would still show just the "Address" tooltip. Both browsers would show the ALT text when images were turned off, in addition to their tooltips.

If you added TITLE text to that, IE would show the TITLE text in the tooltip instead of the ALT text, and would still show the script address in the status bar. Opera would now show:

"Title: (title text)
Address: (javascript address text)"

in a tooltip.

It all makes sense once you get to wrap your brain around it, I swear. Either that, or I've gone completely nuts to match. :suffer:

Suffering Suckataz (see Sylvester the cat, if I recall correctly). My little bar at the bottom of my window shows a javascript-test for every smiley I put my mouse pointer on. Even the :suffer: one. It goes like this: 'javascript: Smiley0()'.

There, I put all Suffer related discussion into one thread!  :suffer:

To add Suffer to these boards, I installed the "Add More Smileys" mod.  Basically I could write any thing I wanted to represent it, but I chose : suffer :  ;D

So the Smiley() function does the exact same thing as replaceText()?  Hmm, I wonder why they wrote their own function?

I could put ALT texts and TITLE texts for all the other icons, but I would have to go into the code and look.  I just noticed the tooltip as an added bonus.  Maybe later on I'll add names for the other guys, as per the thread that oldbushie was talking about.  Right now I have a lot of stuff to do though. 8)

Beats me. Despite my ability to pull seemly logical arguments out of my butt, unlike my HTML knowledge, which ain't too shabby, my javascript knowledge isn't very robust yet. I would think you would be able to just add a : suffer : option to the replaceText function somehow... maybe adding new Smiley() functions is just an easier method of adding smileys in regards to the way all the board coding is done? (Is the adding smileys option a mod, or built into the board?)

It's not really a big deal to me... it would be nice to see eventually, but I was more just wanting to try and explain why all the different browsers and attributes do what they do for the sake of blathering my esoteric and useless knowledge to the masses yet again. ;D

Oops, maybe I didn't make it clear.  I learned HTML back in Grade 10.   ;D  Real HTML, like with Notepad.  :suffer:  That's how I'm able to fix all these messed up tables, tag errors and stuff.

Unfortunately, I didn't learn the advanced stuff like CSS, Javascript (although I know Java, so how hard can the script be :P), XML, CGI, Perl, ASP, JSP, etc.

I didn't know Flash until last year and became an expert in it over the summer (thanks to KQ9!).  PHP and SQL I didn't know either and still don't know much, but by working with these forums I'm picking it up fast.   :P

Hmm, this dyslexicity is beyond my comprehension. Aiming? (No, can't be, although the 't' and the 'g' are very close to each other on my keyboard, don't know about Say's though).

I know you don't really mean it, all those meanies, but you do say it a lot though, so a smiley would me better, since you wouldn't have to type as much anymore. ;D

I stay online later the evening/night prior to a day I don't have to go to work or get up early for any other reason. Currently it's the night between Thursday and Friday, and since it's after midnight, technically it's already Friday. :)
