Title: The DVD Thread
Post by: dark-daventry on August 17, 2006, 12:22:35 PM
This a thread to discuss all things DVD. Whether it's the latest DVD release, or if it's talking about your favorite DVD, this is the place!

I recently bought Superman (1978) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0078346/) on DVD. Two things stood out. Firstly, while most DVDs have the film on one disc and the special features on a second disc, this instead used a double-sided disc (film on one side, special features on the other). Also, the packaging made a big deal of the DVD version of the movie including eight minutes of footage that weren't included in the 1978 theatrical release. However, I'm pretty sure that most (if not all) of this extra footage has been included in TV broadcasts of the film over the years.

Let's see, too many. I have an extensive (and ever growing) library of DVDs! My latest are: Futurama Volumes one and two, Highlander: The Immortal Edition, and uh, yeah. That's all I can remember! I love my dvd's though! My favorite and most treasured dvd out of my entire library is Ronin Warriors. I am oner hundred percent obbsessed with it! Coming in at number 2 is either Thundercats (all of them) or my Highlander DVD!

No. I really don't like movies save for a few that would catch my eye. Overall, PotC and HP are pretty much all I'll be excited about. :P

Okay! Thank you for clearing that up... In other news: I have set my sights on getting Star Trek: Deep Space Nine seasons 5 and 7. (I already own 1,2,3,4, and 6) Don't ask why I got season six first! I also intend to get House season 1 and two, as well as Prison break seasone, and the next family guy set in november I believe, as well as Thundercats season 2 volume 2, and American Dad and every single Highlander season known to man (or in short, all six seasons)... *breaths* and I also intend on getting the third Invader Zim DVD as well as Drawn Together, and if they ever bring Distraction to DVD, I'll get that as well. I also intend on getting Star Trek voyager's seven seasons... You can tell I have a huge obsession over the television can't you... It's so addicting! So many shows and DVDs, such few funds! What am I to do?  ??? XD

I found myself buying more series on DVD rather than movies. I don't like to watch movies that often and I find series more engaging.
Title: Re: The DVD Thread

Same. I just found myself yesterday spending around 60 bucks on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Season 5. It should arrive at my house in two or five business days... The store never has my DVDs in stock! I always order them now! Well, after season five, I only have to get season 7 to own the complete series of DS9! Then comes voyager, and if I feel like it, TNG... And of course the Animated series... I have hgeard positive things about the episode Yesteryear... Supposedly the only good episode in the entire series... That's why it lasted a season and a third of quarter... It probably had two or three episodes in season 2... Season one was a full blown season...

Most of the series I want still haven't been released, and it doesn't look like they will be for a while. I could import but I'd rather wait for Region 4 copies.

What about Wonder Years -- I liked that as a kid ---  ;)

I read about Wonder Years -- not being released in the Wall Street Journal because the songs were not licensed for DVD at the time the show was made so it would cost lots of $ to have the series come out -- Any comments?
Title: Re: The DVD Thread
Post by: racx_00 on September 02, 2006, 08:59:27 AM
That happens with some old shows and even anime. An anime series has just started being released out here and they had to change the theme song due to licences. The original theme song was by Duran Duran and was just gonna cost too much. :-\

Thanks, Racx!  I feel it is too bad when the music changes because sometimes the music helps make the show.  I guess it is people's greed that causes this to happen.

Oh man I remember the Last Unicorn. It was great, I really liked it and would love to see it come out on DVD.
A live–action remake of it? ??? Oh goodness I hope not.  That would just be horrible. There is just no  way they could turn that animation in to a live-action movie and do it ANY justice. Just leave it as it is and release it on DVD for us to enjoy again. ;D

Hey, I'm just reporting what I heard. I thought the original was good enough, but some people would probably disagree with me. Some people seem to be blinded by the surface appearance. Since I grew up on KQ, I am able to see things for what they are on the inside and not be blinded by it's appearance. I can see how good something is despite how "outdated" the animation may be. Although I must admit that the old black and white movies really put me off... I guess my eyes can't penetrate that surface! XD Maybe it's because my eyes are so accustomed to modern day technology with it's action and special effects... Who knows... Perhaps the new James bond and Harry Potter movies really change my vision of things... XD

Sorry DD  I wasn't griping at you. I honestly did mean it as a gripe at all. I just liked that show, if we're talking about the same one. While I haven't seen it in a long time I think it would still hold up rather well now days (maybe that's just my minds eye making it look better). I've never been a fan of movie remakes though; very few do any justice to the original. I actually kind of like the original black and white movies, like Casablanca, I would never want that to be colored.
Title: Re: The DVD Thread
Post by: dark-daventry on September 19, 2006, 08:32:02 AM
I do not know what that means, but I am not blaming you for anything. I am not mad... We all have different views. It's life... I think a few remakes could do well, depending on the movie... I'm betting in years to come, the Harry Potter movies will be remade with more special effects and longer times to incorporate the lost scenes. Besides, the movie industry is in a slump right now anyway. They need business, and so they do what they have to to get money. I would like to see more sequels personally.

*Revives*

A DVD that I'm looking forward to is the Extended Edition of Peter Jackson's King Kong, which will be released on Nov 14th.

There were quite a few things in the trailers that I noticed never made it into the theatrical release, so it will be cool to see what is new, very much like the Extended LOTR DVDs. :)

*Hopes that there's a commentary*

I <3 The Last Unicorn! It's been a favorite of mine for as long as I can remember, and it's already available on DVD too. CLICKY! (http://www.amazon.com/Last-Unicorn-Alan-Arkin/dp/B00019330Y/sr=8-1/qid=1161479154/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-5185053-3624150?ie=UTF8)

Zelly has both the novel and the movie, which I've yet to read but she says the movie is a very faithful adaptation.

As for a live-action version, it could be awesome if it were done correctly, but also has the potential to be very disappointing indeed.... :-\

Another November DVD release I'm looking forward to is Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (http://www.amazon.com/Superman-II-Richard-Donner-Cut/dp/B000IJ79WU/sr=1-1/qid=1161585858/ref=sr_1_1/002-3220186-3948041?ie=UTF8&s=dvd)

It's basically the film as it was originally intended to be, because during mid-production Richard Donner (director of the first Superman) was fired by WB due to various disagreements, and the reigns were handed over to another director to complete it. Of course the new director had a different style of filmmaking, and chose to take the movie in different directions, deciding to discard a good deal of what Donner had already shot to replace it with his own scenes. These cut scenes will now be put back into the movie.

Of course this new cut could never replace the theatrical cut, but it is definitely something I'm interested in seeing. :)

Well, I'm super excited for the DVD release of Return to Halloweentown, the latest Disney Channel Original movie! I think the DVD is coming in november, but I am not positive. It is the third sequal in the series, thus being the fourth movie, which also marks it as the first DCOM to have a fourth movie. Of course, other DCOMS are getting the sequel treatment (Zenon: Z4 anyone? The ultimate christmas gift 2? Yep. They're all happening...) But halloweentown has remained my all-time favorite DCOM, and it shall remain so forever after.... The fifth movie is just beginning it's internet rumour stage.... Wikipedia has a lot.... Anywho, I asked my mom to get me Thundercats season 2 volume 2 for christmas, which will complete my thundercats collection. Also, I am so dissapointed that Gargoyles season 2 volume 2 won't happen unless sales increase. Spread the word. The next volume is in grave danger...

Wait... There was a mini-series called Merlin wasn't there? Are they one and the same? I really liked the mini-series (I saw it on DVD...) and would love to see another... I am going to buy the Highlander Series on DVD whenever I have the time. I already have Highlander: The Immortal Edition. It's really good, and I really, really enjoy it! A bit off-topic, but I watched Star Wars Episodes 1, 4,5,6 recently on VHS. I have the special Collectors edition of the orignal trilogy on VHS and a special edition widescreen Phantom Menace on VHS. I'm sure I could get somewhere like a thousand bucks per video on eBay.... Anything's possible... Isn't it? Speaking of eBay... I had a new Thread idea! YAY! I make tons of random threades don't I?

I finally got my hands on the Extended Edition of King Kong, and am pretty satisfied with it. ;D

For those who are interested (if any XD), the film is now roughly thirteen minutes longer, all of the new footage taking place during the Skull Island section of the movie. There are two new action sequences that most of the new material covers, the second one being particularly cool.

Aside from the longer cut, there is also nearly forty minutes of deleted scenes, a feature commentary, screenplays, a full length making of documentary, and a couple of other featurettes. And all of the behind the scenes material stands apart from the production diaries released prior to this edition, so even if you own those most of the information will still be new. :)

Captain N: The Game Master is out on DVD I think.... I now own all seven seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as well as seasons one and two of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The series finale to Star Trek: DS9 is pretty cool, yet sad too. I also got tons of Christmas DVDs. It's my favorite holiday! XD I know, I'm a greedy pig! XD
