I was reading about Knights, and whatnot, and thinking in terms of the KQ Series, Graham is an unusual knight. He wears no armor, nor has no sword, and his choice of clothes...is more like a squires' than a knight. He doesn't seem to have much royal experience (in the novels) which is unusual, because as a knight, supposedly of noble birth (whose father was supposedly the king's best friend), he would've been raised around the king and others of the nobility. He has a knight's kindess and compassion, and yet he doesn't seem very intense or commanding. I mean, even as a kindly man, as a king of a large country, he should have a bit of a commanding attitude, he doesn't seem very king-like even as king......
I agree with you, Graham is an unusual king but he always seems to do good on his quests.
To paraphrse King's Quest Companion, Graham wears the uniform of a "Ranger".
It capitalizes the term "Ranger", if that means anything.

It means a lot. Specifically it suggests that Graham's extraordary success in his quests is not so much a matter of luck, but rather that Graham is actually Chuck Norris (http://www.rrlicensing.com/store/catalog/images/walker%20tr.jpg).

Granted, Walker never dressed in the same uniform Graham wore in games LOL. But I"m sure that would be hilarious if he did.

Graham DOES have a sword in KQ2VGA, though it's best if he doesn't have to use it.
And if you took KQ2VGA, it also has him playing in the castle garden as a child. I suppose he only wore a sword when he absolutely needed it as a knight. Of course, in most of the quests he didn't have a chance to go grab a sword really. KQI was one quest he could have used one, but with all the problems his country had maybe he couldn't get one? IDK. Then in KQ2 he did end up with a sword later, but why he didn't start with one i don't know (maybe he didn't think he'd need it). In King's Quest V he never really had a chance to go for a sword or armor.
As for how commanding he is as a king, we don't really see much of Grhaam actually commanding his average soldier, though you do get the impression he is extremely gracious as a king, and pretty laid back too.

In the official KQ2 story, I.E the originaly released sierra game, Graham never brought a sword along with him.
He gets the sword later on as one of the three rewards from the genie, when he rubs the lamp. Its never used unless the player wants to solve the game with less than full possible score.
King's Quest Companion explains that he was never one for violence, his strongest assets was his agility and speed, and he could solve his problems with wits and intelligence. He also doesn't like to be burdened down by carrying weapons and armor, and prefers to find what he needs as he goes(you might say almost mcgyver style). He lives by the latter(wits and intelligence), and survives by the former(speed and agility).
His prime minister Gawain(the official Gawain, not Gervain from KQ2+) actually finds Graham to be a bit impulsive the way he never really goes prepared whenever he leaves on any journey. Actually he generally warned Graham against leaving on adventures alone and unprepared.
Now on the original IBM box for King's Quest 1, shows how Graham looks in full armor, with a sword. While the artwork for the SMS KQ1, shows him with a sword.
I don't really find it that unusual. :P People are knighted today for good deeds, but you don't see them walking around in armor! XD
As for why Sierra did it, probably because a grey blob walking around wouldn't seem very King's Questy. ;P
A non-violent knight isn't very medieval, but I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that. ;D However, a number of tales exist in differant cultures about rulers going about in peasant clothes and living as normal people to see what the people thought about them in particular and things in general. I can't say it ever actually happened, but it was a remarkably common tale told about popular rulers in many differant cultures and and places, though the only one I can recall specifically out of hand is Haroun ar-Rashid in the Arabian Nights. You might see this in a similar light. :)
Speaking of Haroun he once was the court wizard to Casimma's grandfather. He's the wizard that once poofed himself into an aardvark :suffer:.

The Haroun in the Arabian Nights tales actually was based on a historical Caliph, of the same name.
Really? I meant the historical Caliph of course, though he has become subject of so many legends telling truth from falsehood is near impossible. Then again with Kings quest so dependant on fairy tales this fits the theme well. :)
Haroun is also the Sultan of Shapier(where is spelled Harun), where he is also known as the poet Omar.
