I was watching the intro to KQVI, and I just realized what a cinemic experience both that intro, the game itself and the King's Quest series is. That's part of the magic of it...It's more than a game; it's almost like a movie except you're the director, the actor and the audience all in one. The cinemic heights Sierra was striving for (and very near reaching) are truly amazing, and it's so interesting (at least to me) to think what the old Sierra could doing with today's technology had history occurred differently.
That intro is really something special in a game...First of all the graphics are are still pretty dang good after 14 years; and the music and the choreography is on par with a Hollywood feature; for me it has not been topped in it's cinemic feeling. I'm pretty sure it wasw the first full 3D video in a game.
Watching the seagulls fly upon the water with the soft music playing and then seeing Alex's ship burst forward with that adventurous theme playing; it's very picturesque and like watching a high adventure film. Sierra should've kept this realistic; boundary pushing and adventurous direction for VII...The KQ Series was heading for tremendous heights with V and then VI....Perhaps this glory will finally be realized and recaptured in TSL =)
I haven't watched the intro to KQ6 in a while (mainly because amazon is being stupid and won't ship my compilations...) but I do remember the intro fairly well, and must admit that I enjoy it quite a lot. I believe that you are correct. I wish they made a movie.... King's Quest the movie....
If this is your way of saying you'd like a hint about what the opening cutscenes are like, I can tell you one little secret...

I remember the intro movies, the one to KQ6 was truly beautiful. I always thought it was a pity they cut some of it for the CD version. Speaking of which, does anyone still have the old disk version? I was wondering about a cutscene there, IIRC there was a close-up of the minotaur 's face but I'm not sure. It's been ages since I last played it, if I do replay KQ6 once in a while, I usually just play the CD version and now I have no clue where the other one is. :-\
Really there's more on the diskette version then the CD? Wow, didn't know that. I wonder if anyone out there is hosting both so I can see the difference? Are there any other differences?
I never knew that the diskette version had a longer intro on it. How ironic!

I actually only know that from a site that hosts screenshots and compares both intros, I have no idea of the URL as it was a while ago. :-\ But I'm not sure if it's that much extended, I just know there are some more shots of Valanice.
Oh. I think it's ironic how that happens though. Discs can hold more data than a Diskette and yet the Diskette has a longer intro than the disc... It's so ironic!
Actually, a few scences of the diskette intro movie were ommited in the CD version, but other ones were added. They are just 'transitions' between the dialogs so the lines remain the same.
Most important, the CD version featured upgraded visual and sound effects, that makes it a LOT better than the diskette version. In the diskette version the voice acting was performed by Sierra employees, and believe me, it sounds AWFUL compared to the professional voice acting from the CD. The colors and shading effects were improved too, giving it a more realistic feel.

I never knew that the CD intro was any different from the diskette. I'll have to look into this next time I'm in Florida with my sister as she managed to get the CD versions of 5 and 6 and since we at home only have the diskettes.
Haven't seen much of the KQ VI intro in a long time...my computer is far too modern to run such ancient software fully...though it once did (damn Windows Update killed it! Modern upgrades have all but eliminated any further hope of my running any more of my old DOS games but thats a different story...)
Nonetheless, I have fond memories of that one as it was the first KQ I ever played (indeed, the only one I have ever really bothered with apart from the very nice AGD remakes and playing a few 'warez' versions of other KQ games from dubious sources!)
Lets hope TSL can continue this happy lineage, which I am sure it will! 8)

Anyway, back on topic. I loved the KQ 6 introduction and enjoy watching it <the cd collection from Roberta William's Anthology> from 98SE. <smile>

Indeed it was. Too bad Sierra decided to shift the approach for KQ7 and KQ8. KQ7 was way too buggy (runned crappy under Windows 3.1) and way too cartoonish (if I wanted to watch a cartoon, I could see ethem every Saturday and Sunday morning) and KQ8 was way too much RPG/Dungeon-like (Utlima Underworld was way better in that and was at least seven years older) . . .
I liked KQ7 but it was indeed buggy. The Disney feel was different and kind of cool, I thought but maybe I was in the minority but that is okay with me. Anyway, KQ7 at least was a King's Quest game unlike Mask of Eternity.
