Title: Board stretching (dots)
Post by: Jeysie on October 27, 2003, 10:12:46 AM
Other oddities I've found:

The recent posts section doesn't wrap at all, so it makes the table on the main index page take up the whole screen width. It wouldn't look that bad, except that it's wider than the main site nav menu on top, and the right border is slightly gone.

Something I've noticed on YaBB SE boards in general is that whenever you mouse over the "bread crumbs" menu at top (like King's Quest IX Forums  |  Other Topics  |  KQ9 Forum Questions and Suggestions  |  Post reply ( Re:Bugs!! ) at the top of this one, for example) the entire thing gets underlined, not just the specific part you're mousing over. Makes it a little hard to make sure you're choosing the right part of the link. Not sure if it's fixable or not.

Edit: Not really a bug... I just find it ironic that YaBB SE's software posts a XHTML W3C image when the template code has enough errors to choke a horse. <G> It's too bad that AFAIK nobody's really come up with truly standards-compliant-coded forum software that I know of...

Quote from: Yonkey on October 27, 2003, 11:23:01 AMDo you mean over here: http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?action=recent ?  It wraps fine over here.  Try it on Internet Explorer and tell me if u still see it.

No, I mean where that section is embedded on the main page itself.

The actual forum part used to stretch the full length of the screen only on the main page, and I think it was the "Recent Posts" section that was doing it. Except now it's fine. But of course, the recent post titles are now different, so who knows? Doctor, my brain hurts.

Oh, and I can't try it on Internet Explorer... at least, not IE6, and IE5 sucks anyway, so that wouldn't tell us much.

Quote from: Yonkey on October 27, 2003, 11:23:01 AMAgain, it's separated when I use it.  Maybe this is a browser-specific problem.

Perhaps. Although considering the sorry state of the forum code, and the fact that Opera is almost completely standards-compliant, my first hunch would be that it's more like a code-specific problem. ;) Unfortunately since the code is such a mess, there's no way I'd be able to figure out exactly why it's happening. Makes me wish I knew how to program in PHP and whatnot...

That weird stretching problem on the main page is back again:

Well, YaBB SE *was* cool to use. :P

Quote from: Yonkey on October 27, 2003, 03:10:51 PMWhoa, what resolution is that?   ???

1024 x 768 pixels. (shrug) I have to have the fonts set a bit high, and I have all my fave browser features reduced to one toolbar (I do so love Opera...)... maybe that's what's throwing you off. :)

Quote from: Yonkey on October 27, 2003, 03:10:51 PMTo solve this there's a few things that can be done:
- I can try fixing the html for that table's width and see if that helps.
- turning the recent posts thing back into a one line
- make The Knight stop using so many ............'s  :suffer:

I dunno... I think option #3 would work really well! :suffer: I'd hate to have to collapse the section... seeing the 5 most recent posts like that is pretty handy.

You use the same resolution I do, but I guess the font size is just larger.

Ok, I've fixed the table size now, are you still having the problem?

The Knight can't stop using long lines of dots. That's his trademark :P

Yonkey -
I don't need to post or anything. I just press "refresh" or "back" and get the messed-up screen  :-\

Yeah, it's still bizarro. :P Maybe TK could just use... a bit fewer dots?

You heard the lady.   ;D

The Knight, please limit your dots to a max of 9.  9 Cuz we're KQ9.   ::)

Actually, I think you might be able to use as many as you want now.   ;D

Basically the forums were stretching because of the topics being displayed in the recent post box.  But now that we have a View New Posts feature, I don't need to show the top 5 anymore.  As a result, it won't stretch the forum.

First though, lets check with Jeysie and see if the single line Recent Post thing that it's set to now is stretching hers or not.   :)

Funny... I never saw the board strech, no matter how many dots T-Knight used  :P

I know, it doesn't stretch for me either.  But I can see how it would for larger fonts or a smaller resolution.  Go to page 3 of the We're Back thread in General.  If you compare the table that has all the messages to the table that has the home, help, search etc buttons, you'll notice how it's stretched a bit.

If you look down, you'll find a topic that has a lot of dots that fills a full row.  That would be the one that's stretching it.

It's quite a lot!

Hmm, setting it to 60 still is able to stretch the forum, but I guess it's not that bad now.   ;D

It looks fine... for now, anyway. ;) I feel like a pain in the butt, though. I need to get a job that pays me enough to afford contacts again... maybe then I can drop my font size a little. :P

Other than the stretch thing, I'm not complaining about the dots thing... everyone has their quirks. I mean, heck, I get the feeling I don't want to calculate the number of smileys I pepper my own posts with... ;D

You don't use that many emoticons. SOME people around here use whole rows of them  ::)

I didn't notice any stretching, and I'm using NS6.2.1, windowed (meaning not full screen), on a 1024x768 resolution-using 17-inch CRT-monitor. Is that enough information?

As for code-compliant sites though, I recently tried posting something on the Syberia2-forums. :o NS6.2.1, couldn't type, NS 4.76, couldn't type and it said there was a script problem. Opera 6.04 (yes, I still haven't upgrade yet), also no go (still script problem), and while I could type something when using IE4.01 SP2 (although there was still a script problem), I couldn't post the text I wrote! (Talk about standards-compliant). What did work though, was (yes, I'm sure you know the answer by now) Internet Explorer 6 (which I tried on my laptop at work)! So I'm pretty sure that's not a YaBB or eZ-board.  :-\ Goodbye Syberia2-forum! ::) I'll stick to this forum instead.

Are you sure it doesn't bother you??  I coded something that can remove all excess (more than 9) dots and I was dying to test it!   ;D

Actually, you can still use it if you want... the main page is fine, but the thread pages with lots 'o dots are a little funky. ;)

YAY!!!!   ;D

No offense, The Knight.  We love your dots, but I just want to see how good my PHP coding skills are.   ;D With this you won't need to count 9 dots either, just put as many as you want and it will automatically do the trimming.
