Title: The Musical taste thread
Post by: Drunken Chinchilla on November 18, 2003, 11:50:05 AM
pretty simple just do the following.

Name a band(s)/group(s)/solo artist(s)/DJ(s)/MC(s)/Rapper(s) (WHATEVER!...(s)) thats sending chills down your spine at the moment, in a good way of course :) Then just say why and any other info you wish to share.

I'll start off with.....

Martina Topley Bird - OMFG there is a God! This extremely talented, red hot solo artisit has just released her debut album in the UK. The style is kind of like Bjork/Emilliana torrini (both absolutely amazing artists if I might say so) mixed with a more urban edge. Her vocals are always top notch and amaze me even though I've listened to her tracks toooo many times! "Too tough to die" for example is a really rough and gritty song which features a dirty driving guitar riff topped off with MTB's strong vocals coming through over the top of a sample saying TOO TOUGH TO DIEmmmm very nice! Then on the other end of the musical spectrum is lullaby which is so soft and gentle you're scared to turn the volume up incase it breaks the soothing sound of her vocals. Altogether and amazing new artist BUY HER ALBUM NOW!1!!!!!11!!!1!!!!!!!!!

Ok next is......

Muse - This is a UK rock band who are made up of three members. The vocals of lead singer Matt Bellamy are, well, unique! This backed up with amazingly catchy guitar riffs makes them one of my favourite rock bands. I never used to listen to them even though they've been round for quite a few years but after buying their new album i've invested in their older ones too. Theres simply too many good tracks to mention but if you have to get a few then go for "plug in baby", "Time is running out" or "Citizen erased" (3 of my favs)

Well thats it really! Write as much or as little (or nothing  :-\) as you like  ;D

I listen mostly to movie soundtracks so I listen to whatever's played on that.  I don't know most of bands that play on movie soundtracks, but Evanescence, off of the DareDevil soundtrack, was simply breathtaking.

The lead vocalist, Amy Lee, has an incredibly beautiful voice.  It's crisp, it's clean and the tone is very pure.  The opening of Bring Me To Life is haunting.  And the melody and use of strings in My Immortal gives me chills.

I like pretty much all of the songs on the album.  But she really excels at the slower songs.  Her voice is best suited for those and those songs are powerful and haunting.

I found out that she wrote most of the songs and did the arranging for them - she IS talented!

Listening to Willie Nelson right now, and the "Kill Bill" soundtrack has some pretty awesome songs as well. ;D

I'm definitely digging the Kill Bill soundtrack.  Tarantino always has good music in his films.

I've never been to one that counts... except perhaps a Peter Paul and Mary concert a couple years ago. ;) I've never been to one of those concerts where everyone's all crazy and stuff and waving their arms in the air and the band's like really popular and stuff.

Okay, you now all have an assignment from me to go see a concert like that PRONTO. It is SO much fun!!  ;D ;D ;D
Title: Re:The Musical taste thread
Post by: Storm on December 05, 2003, 02:58:29 PM
Nah, don't think I ever will. Concerts are much more fun when they happen to other people. I honestly can't see myself going all crazy and waving my arms in the air in a big crowd of people doing the same  ::)
Actually, I don't like the idea of me doing anything in a big crowd of people doing the same  :P

Post by: Yonkey on December 05, 2003, 03:39:10 PM
I've only been to a few concerts, but none of them were really wild or crazy. ;D  The first one was a big one with a bunch of artists, but the only popular ones I remember were the Fugees and Cypress Hill.  Then a few years ago I went to a Janet Jackson concert, that one was pretty nice.  :P

In September this year I went to a little one in the park around here (my roomate got free tickets).  It was a weekend long thing with a lot of different artists, but I just went for the few that I liked and wanted to hear (Choclair, The Rascalz and Naughty By Nature).  It was pretty entertaining, but the promoter said something like he couldn't afford to pay the artists.  Some artists were like "well, we're not getting any money from this, but we're doing this anyway for all the fans out there!".  It was nice, it reminded me of the motivation for this KQ9 project.  But, other artists didn't want to play because they weren't getting paid.  Since my ticket was free I didn't really care, but I would have been really pissed if I paid for a concert and the people I wanted to see never showed up.   >:(

Anyway, I usually go to concerts to hear songs I like and to be entertained.  I don't go psycho or anything at them, even if I'm surrounded by those kinds of people. ;D  That's not really my personality.  Now if I were drunk and surrounded by them...  8)

I don't take kindly to orders. In fact, the harder people insist, the less I am likely to do it. If I have to do it, I will postpone as long as I can.
Besides, I'm not a concert person either.

Weeeell. I've been to many barbershop concerts. The fun part about barbershop concerts is that *everybody* gets to go "backstage" if they want. Most choruses will have an after concert party called an "afterglow" where the chorus, chorus quartets, and feature quartets sing a few more off-the-cuff numbers, and then if you want you can shmooze with the feature quartets (read: the "famous" ones. <G>) and try to sing with them, or get autographs or something. Fun.

As for actual more "commercial" singers/bands... well, I did go to a barbershop show with Rockapella as the featured singers. Ohhhh, that was sweet! I thought their tenor Scott was sexy before, but ooooooh can that guy *dance*! (drool) Unfortunately, the show was in Rhode Island, so we didn't get to attend the afterglow because we needed to make the long trek home. (Actually I can't even remember if they had one.)

Other than that, nada. Either there's just nobody performing in my neck of the woods, or I have no money for a ticket. Like right now, The Barenaked Ladies are performing at UMass in Amherst. But do I have any money to go? Nope. Blah.

Peace & Luv, Liz

/me 's cats go around hassling the other board members to be kind a make a donation so Jeysie can go to the concert.

I would :-*, but I don't see how I could transfer the money from Flanders to MA, USA. :-\
BTW, I have no idea who the Barenaked Ladies are, my guess is they don't have a distributing company in Flanders, Europa. :-[

BNL is performing at UMass AMherst?????  Ooo!!! I wanna go...but need to buy xmas gifts. Drat!

They're AWESOME live. I've seen them twice at Tweeter Center (which should SO still be called Great Woods, sigh...). So much fun! I love that their songs are about the most random things - for example, their latest CD has songs about chimps...  ;D

next years genna be great for concerts for me. To start off in January going to see Amy Winehouse, a new soul/blues artist with a slight hint of billie Holiday type vocals thrown in. All for the bargain sum of £8!!!

Next in February I'm going to see air, who admittedly I've only heard one or two songs of but they're meant to be amazing live and my mates a massive fan of theirs so should be good.

Then in March I'm going to see Zero 7  8) Ultimate chill/blues/jazzy Dj's who are just one of my favourite bands since last year. Then also in March I'm (finally after missing two previous gigs!) seeing P!nk.

Wow nice Lyrics there! You got any demos done yet or you just jamming for fun? Heh I can never get lyrics but I can always get tunes, quite annoying really.

Still I've just written a new song for the band I'm in (which now consists of 2 members eek :o) about a girlfriedn who has an affair with a teacher which is quite amusing.  I'm still in the very early learning stage of guitar and im starting bass soon too so atm I'm just on vocals.

oooohhhhhh yeahhhhhhh! I just remembered! I saw Amy Winehouse on Monday in town and WOW! She is one amazing live act, so at ease with the audience, so aware of the band and all the time strumming away on the guitar while singing those silky smooth vocals. The best £8 I've ever spent thats for sure. Plus, due to the crowd giving her such a good end applause she did an en core of f*** me pumps, the funniest track on her album. Mmmmm all I can say is amy amy amy :D:D:D:D

A few weeks ago, just as I was leaving a shop with a group of people, I saw a CD of Bare Naked Ladies. But, since we were just leaving, I was unable to acquire it because if I did I would lose contact with the rest of the group. So, it would seem some company can export them to Europe, just not WB. :(

Speaking of Barenaked Ladies, I was looking at the lyrics to "One Week" the other day!  Hahahah I never knew they were so funny!  :D I knew some of the lines but I never knew about some others!  For example:

Quote
Gonna get a set a' better clubs
Gonna find the kind with tiny nubs
Just so my irons aren't always flying off the back-swing

Gotta get in tune with Sailor Moon
'Cause the cartoon has got the boom anime babes
That make me think the wrong thing

My girlfriend says that Pachelbel's Canon is the only song that comforts her.
Therefore, I'm trying to learn to play it on the piano, even though I have about zero piano skills.

(sigh) I get to show my ignorance again, but... what *is* Pachelbel's Canon?

And I'd guess she means *girlfriend* girlfriend. At least, even as nice as I am, if one of my gal pals made a similar comment, I'd just try to find a piano version of the song to give her. But if I had a boyfriend who made the comment, I'd attempt to learn piano. I'd probably just make him laugh with my playing attempts instead of comforting him, but heck, it'd make him feel better in *some* way. ;)

And Serei... why doesn't your guy pal let you play KQ more often? The meanie. ;)

Peace & Luv, Liz

And if she's on this forum as a new person and she's not telling me, I am going to be grumpy...

Because, she likes Pachelbel's Canon, has a VERY similar art style to that of our newcomer Serei, is 16 years old, when she likes something she says that she hearts it, and she likes Evanescence.

A band that's really making me bob my head and sing along in my wonderful off-key cambiada is O.A.R. Sweet malarky, this band is AWESOME!!!!

As for awesome concerts that I've been to, nothing beats Green Day. That was without a doubt the best show I've ever seen. Blink182 played with them and I considered them the cool-down band. The only thing Blink did to even come close to comparing with Green Day was when Travis Barker's (drummer) drum platform raised into the air and over the crowd and then spun him upside down in two direction while he soloed around fireworks. Other than that, Green Day just killed. They were awesome.

O.A.R. Hmmmm haven't heard of them, I'll have to check em out!

Well I've just got back from ANOTHER gig and this was really quite good too! There were four bands on, one of them being my mates boyfriends band called Second Sun rising. The first act was trying so hard to be rock yet you could tell they were suited more to pop, still sounded quite decent.

Second Sun Rising on the other hand were really great. I don't quite know who to compare them too as it was so new and fresh, not like the recent crap thats been on the radio (GO AWAY LOST PROPHITS PLEASE!!!! (no offence to lost prophits fans but UK radio stations have a habit of killing songs by way overplaying them))

The next one was called "Progress" I think and they were really quite good too but alot more technical than the previous two with various synths and controllers along with the guitars and drums etc. The only thing was the main singer had a major attitude problem and I suspect he was drunk (possibly due to him drinking three cans of larger throughout the performance). That kinda ruined it for me.

The last act alas I didnt have time to see due to the last train leaving town at 11:30. Ah well still a quite good night but dont expect to hear any of these bands on a radio near you any time soon as theyre all unpolluted by the industry (Or rather, not yet signed to multi million record deals :D)

Mmmm another new album has just landed on my doorstep. I hope and pray that at least one person here as heard of Zero 7. Well anyway their new album as just come out and its pretty much in the style of the first album without the emphasis on orchestrated strings and the like. Very nice although I was expecting a little evolution. Still the tracks featuring Sia Furler are always a highlight, ( check out her website you cna listen to the whole album here http://www.siamusic.net/home/?truehome=true ) and the usual laid back jazzy style gets you sooo relaxed and sleepy. Buy buy buy, if you want to that is.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio1_aod.shtml?oneworld (http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio1_aod.shtml?oneworld)

Unless you wanna hear some Auf Der Maur (which is also really good) then keep clicking forward till you get to around the 40 minute mark. It's all live btw :)

I love comatose music, though there's some good techno out there that I like. And mixtures of classical music with hard rock overtones is always interesting. ;)

Enya is awesome!! ;B

I haven't heard much Enya, but what I have heard was well enough to listen to.

Recently-ish Harrison got into listening to Bjork CDs, and I must say I'm rather fond of her quirky style. :)

ah, the music taste thread

:)

Well, as probably everybody that knows me a little bit know, I'm a number one fan of MARILLION (band from the UK). As a matter of fact, they are releasing a new CD in 3 weeks and I just CAN'T WAIT. The year of Marbles.

If they come to the US (they haven't been here in 5 years), you can swear I'm touring with them! for a month! lol

But I do listen to other stuff: Depeche Mode, Pink Floyd, Genesis.... Tori Amos is a goddess. Mathhews Good Band I like a lot, Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, U2, IQ, Arena, and I could keep naming bands, but they are pretty obscure and totally non-commercial, so you've probably never heard of them.

Needless to say, I never listen to the Radio. :)

I also enjoy soundtracks a lot. The score kind of soundtracks. I must admit Evanescense is really good. One of the only things that I've heard from the later years that IMHO, are worthy to listen to.

:)

You can't leave because then we'd have to rely on the 'others' to divulge parts of plot information and they're much better at keeping everything to themselves than you. :suffer:

Good good someone else with taste here I see. If you want to hear something that'll make you either cry or cringe, try to listen to pluto by Bjork. Yummy. Also you have to listen to So Broken, I don't think it was on her latest Album (Vespertine) but it was a B side to a single from it so it may be on Kazaa or some other P2P thing. Oh and if Harrison really gets into Bjork tell him to buy the Live Box set, its superb and lets you hear some of the songs in totally new way (I go humble coming to mind mmmmmm) Ahg to much to say, I'll stop now  ;B

ONE MORE THING... Joy Zipper have become my new band of the month now so all hail them.

Anyone like Seether's new song "Broken?" It features Amy Lee from Evanescence (no big deal there, though, the star of the show is still Shaun from Seether) and sounds awesome. Anyone who hasn't heard it should go to www.seether.com and go to the audio section. It is the one up top with all the big features and promotions and stuff.

Title: Re:The Musical taste thread
Post by: uselessidguy331 on May 12, 2004, 03:08:32 PM
Bush...hmm, never made that connection, but you are kind of right. I always thought they were the closest thing to Nirvana in a long time. And there are so many similarities to prove. The signs held up in the "Fine Again" video are extremely Nirvana-ish, as are all of Shaun Morgan's lyrics. Their sound is also very close (of course, Seether is heavier, but they also have a 10 year gap between them). However, the most striking similarities are dark and rather scary. Both Shaun (to a slight extent) and Kurt were bipolar...Kurt had Courtney (Rocker from Hole) and Shaun has Amy from Evanescence...

See, I don't find them that Nirvana-esque, at least musically.  Nirvana seems a little less structured/more eclectic. :)

Nirvana was more of a jam band, I can agree with the less-structured part. Anyone like the ataris?

Seriously, Chumbawumba sings well, plays well, and writes interesting, subversive lyrics. My favorite from their first album is "One By One". It's very pretty, but in an angry, accusatory way. Interesting contrast.

The only people who would find that statement ironic are people who don't know anything about that type of music.  ;P Often the riffs are complicated and the lyrics cerebral.  The singing, well, yeah, it's not easy to growl for a whole song...so that requires more constitution than talent.  And there are actually some heavy metal singers that have phenominal voices (ie: Maynard James Keenan from Tool/aperfectcircle)

As for the chumbawhatsit comment, based on my own ingorance and sillyness. :P

I dunno... the vast majority of heavy metal instrumental work sounds nothing but cacophonic to me. If I want "stylin'" instrumentals I'll listen to jazz or symphonies. ;)

And I suppose the lyrics in the songs could very well be cerebral... too bad 90% of the time you can't understand them. :P

Yeah, it's the singing that kills me for most heavy metal music. I've heard truly talented singers from several genres, and the screaming/mumbling of much of the heavy metal I've heard makes me want to crawl under a table and cringe in disgust.

Having said all that, there are a few heavy metal/hard rock singers/bands I find palatable, even likeable, although I suspect the heavy metal crowd would sneer at my choices. :D

Well, that's a taste thing, which is completely inargueable. :)  But weird thing is, a lot of people who listen to heavy metal in their youth start listening to jazz or blues when they mellow out, due to the similar complex nature of the music.
But as with almost any genre, there are also a few bands out there they have a very simplistic style or sound.

That again, depends on the band and the singer.  Lots people who actually growl and it's still somewhat coherant.

Well, that's a taste thing.  I'd never expect someone to like Metal just because I do.  But to say that they're not talented is a ridiculous suggestion.  The guitars and drumming can sometimes be phenominal, if not mind boggling.

Eh. For the most part I just don't hear it... most heavy metal sounds like noise to me. I prefer music with clear, well-formed, tonal vocals, and complex patterned instrumentals. I like unusual-sounding bands/singers who still have good musical tonality. If I'm in the mood for fun guitar work I'd rather listen to a band like Spin Doctors. Or old Queen stuff. Or old Pearl Jam. (Their latest stuff sucks, IMHO.)
