Title: Trolling?
Post by: GunHoMac on June 12, 2007, 07:57:19 PM
"Trolling" is just a word thrown around to people who post dissenting points of view.  It has little to do with how active the person is, and more so with how it makes the reader feel...usually that reader is someone who's been a positive troll.

If you don't like the state of the game, then say so.  If they ban you for that...just a sign that your sentiments were probably right.  Of course the game will be done when it's done, but just as it sounds redundant when people whine about updates or due dates...it's all the same on the other side.  That other side...where everything is rainbows and puppies...where blind hope reigns supreme.

There are two attacks going on...one against the perception of progress, and the other against those questioning that progress.  In the end, everyone will get to play it when it's done...but until then, the "trolls" are the only people giving this project a pulse.

My definition of a troll is someone who deliberately steers a thread away from its chosen topic and instead tries to make it about their own agenda. I've done this before, but only by accident as I used operate on the rule of thumb that it's far better to find an existing thread to post in than to start a new one.

I think both sides of the argument above (ie not troll, however the lack of updates).  Have valid points.  The problem is that some people would like to know when they can reasonbly expect the game, so they can have a sense of clousure and move on with their lives.

On the other hand the team's view (I hope that I am not misrepresenting them because I am not a team member and I am not their attorney).  Is that they would like to keep the information quiet because of two reasons.  1. Notices are not their priority, their priority is to make the game the as best as possible as quickly as possible.  2. To keep spoilers from leaking.

As you can imagine both sides are almost polar oposites from one another.  The problem that the team sees with sharing the information is that sharing that information is kind like money.  You can have plenty but you always want more.  (At least that the theory of capitalism).  On the other side I think fans fear that if there is no time pressure then the team will take their time to do their game (That they are within their rights).  Sometimes people operate better when they have a deadline, it forces them to work quicker and you learn to sacrfice what can be sacrifice.  Is like cleaning the house, you can either take the whole day cleaning the house or a couple of hours.  Most people take the time that is available to them in the situation.

My intention is not to bash one side or the other.  Instead of arguing or disagreeing I think people can post constructive comments.  Instead of saying post reports, or I want reports mention the reasons and a procedure why.  The fans will proably not be able to negotiate with the team because negotiation only happens when both sides don't have the power to achive their goal and they need something from the other party.  (Overgeneralization, however not that bad from reality).  In this case the Team holds all the power to build the game in their time span.  Hence the only logical way that fans might some thing that they want is not by arguing but rather by persuation.

P.S. I don't know what the definition of a troll is.

From what I know of trolls, they wear loin cloths, are rather large, and smack people on the heads with giants clubs.  ::)

I think you're thinking of a jhonka. :P (I may link that to the original sbmail later...) Though he's pretty small... maybe some cross between a jhonka and the kerrek for the desired size... I bet that's how Morgoth got the idea... :P :crugs:

"Trolling" is when you lurk around in a dark cave and eat people who don't have lanterns. And sometimes you eat the ones WITH lanterns, just to be mean.  ::)

They also lurk under bridges awaiting goats and adventurers that wear blue caps with red feathers on them... or so I've been told. :P
