Title: What's Your Favorite Adventure Game Series?
Post by: Prince Alex on December 05, 2003, 06:56:40 PM
What is your favorite advenute game series? Mine are Space Quest, King's Quest, and Quest for Glory. Let's here your opinions!  ;) While you're at it, why don't you list which series you didn't like and why.

I didn't play that many, but the ones I did play I loved.  They are: King's Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, Monkey Island.  There are some other ones from LucasArts, but they weren't "series".  ;D

King's Quest, of course... this site is titled KQ after all  ;)
Also Quest for Glory and Gabriel Knight (though I only finished one of them). It's not that I don't like other series, but I'm more inclined to fantasy/mystery  ;D

KQ on top, closely followed by LSL, MI is good too, so are BS1 and 2 (if you call that a series, can't run 3 yet).

KQ of course!

But if you can include Zelda in that genre (and I think youc an, fi you thing about it a certain way), then it tops KQ by a little.

Hey, i'm a little dislexic at the leyboard, and my keyboard is old, so keys stick and skip...besides, those flaws are what makes me, ME.

Ah The Legend of Zelda series. I grew up on those games, esp. the ones for GameBoy. However, the way KQ: MOE ( :P) was made reminded me of it.

No matter how old it is, normal keyboard-wear is minimal, however, if you start messing food and drinks on it, it deteriorates quickly, and starts behaving accordingly. So, what heve you been doing to your keyboard? ;D

Yes, but you're seriously overusing your flaw in some posts. 8)

Undoubtably Kings Quest...there is nothing above it. Some people place Myst about it, but Myst is a heartless game, cold, bitter, and in my opinion, unfun. Kings Quest is the greatest series ever. LSL is awesome too.

I WAS going to just lurk, answer polls, and quietly watch... but the failure of any of you to mention the Tex Murphy Series just out and out hurts. The Pandora Directive tops pretty much any adventure game "I" can think of.... After that, QFG, KQ, and Kyrandia are on my personal fave list.

(give me a good reason to post rather than be a lurker... I really want one ;))

(Yeah, I didnt really like Myst either... a little two still and cold for me)

I've vaguely heard of Tex Murphy, never played it though... what's it like?
Title: Re:What's Your Favorite Adventure Game Series?
Post by: FataliOmega on February 23, 2004, 06:32:06 PM
You play the game as a cynical, underpayed (i.e. not payed) P.I. who lives in a seedy, run down apartment in San Francisco, year 2043 (a few years after WW III.) In the Pandora Directive (4th game of the 5 game series and my favorite) your case is to find a missing military researcher who is being hunted down by a corrupt government agency. The plot is very intense but also full of humor and puzzles. It's definitely worth playing if your into adventure games. :)

I own Tex Murphy: Overseer, but haven't had time to play it yet. :P At some point I hope to play it, and track down the other two FMV Tex games... they sound intriguing.

yes, Monkey Island (was great ; ) My other favorites are Quest for Glory and ...KQ. Well I'm not sure about the last one... I just started a few weeks ago, still have to finish KQ3, 4, 5, 7. But I like (love kq6) it so far, xcept MoE

guess I have a lot of adventuring to do ; )

hmm... what about Kyrandia? Sure its puzzles were kinda pitiful... but the atmosphere was really immersive and "magical." I have a softspot for Westwood's music too....  ::)
Title: Re:What's Your Favorite Adventure Game Series?

Kyrandia is pretty nice, my "version" of the third game in the series keeps malfunctioning near the end though. ;P If I ever find the third one for five bucks or less (poor at the moment) I may buy it. ;)

Yeah... Westwood has officially "passed on"  :'(... They fell as Command and Conquer failed. It's kindof sad, actually... Westwood has always been around... though I have to admit, I was less than impressed with their last few attempts at strategy games... (Red Alert II totally killed it for me... Come on... Allied Dolphins?? Were they outta their gourd??)  ???

Anyway, In a week Ill be back at my house and if anyone needs a copy of any of the Kyrandia games.. I can IM it to ya...  ;D

Abandonware… I almost (and still am toying with the idea) put up of my own Abandonware server/game station.   Mine was for Mac stuff but regrettably much of what I found was too unstable…

As for the question…
KQ was my favorite series when I was on my Apple IIe (my infamous youth) but once I got on my Mac with the revolutionary CD-ROM (remember that folks) I really got in to the "Journey Man Project", by that point KQ was sort of winding down and Sierra decided it didn’t like Mac’s anymore…  :'(
Title: Re:What's Your Favorite Adventure Game Series?
Post by: Oldbushie on March 11, 2004, 08:05:14 PM
I <3 The Journeyman Project! :D I got the third one a few years ago, and finally got the first one for a really good price recently. Still trying to get the second one by itself for a really good price, perhaps if it comes up low on ebay sometime I'll get it. ;)

I only have a PC though, no Mac for me. :P (Though I do have a Mac emulator.... ;) ).

The CD I have of B.I.T or J2 was cross platform if I remember right, I’ll have to check. That might have been the best one! Who knows perhaps it’s ebayable?  Presto went under so I’m not sure if that games abandonware or what.  The Presto thing was sad…

No Mac? Get thyself a Mac! It makes everything all better!

Who designed the Mac OS? The same people who first designed Windows… Xerox. Apple bought the first graphical inference computer off of them (Xerox developed it in the late 70’s and thought it wouldn’t sell), used it to design the Mac, and Microsoft soon followed with Windows for DOS based X86 machines.

As for your complaints about the Mac OS, have you tried OS X? It’s smooth as a baby’s…well you know. Doesn’t really mater, whatever OS does the job for you. I’ve got a Windows box too. Each OS has there own positive and negative attributes

(ET reminds himself that this thread was about game series, and tries to get on topic)

To get back on topic, another series I really liked was “Monkey Island”.  Now that’s funny stuff. I didn’t like 4 so much, why did it have to be 3D?

Nope, it was only the third one. It was widely released for PC on DVD. There was a Mac version but it was only available bundled with certain Mac’s to show off their new included DVD drives.

Presto Studios was working on "Myst III" on DVD when they folded. This has since been released as part of the $20 (US retail) "Myst Collection" DVD set.  Cyan put out an excellent "Riven" DVD as well!

Thought I'd add my two pesos. :x

I have a soft spot for games with a good sense of humor, so my favorite series have to be Kyrandia (obviously, hence my nick XD; although the first one KILLED me with the Fire Caves, gah!), KQ and Leisure Suit Larry. XB  I'm starting to get into Space Quest, too.

As for my LEAST favorite, that would definitely have to be the Hugo series.  Anyone remember Hugo?  I played the first two, and could never get past more than the first third of EITHER of them.  And I HATE not finishing games.>:(  But I hated Hugo more. XD;;
Title: Re:What's Your Favorite Adventure Game Series?
Post by: FataliOmega on March 16, 2004, 08:00:21 AM
Unfortunately, I know the games your talking about. My parents got way into all 3 Hugo games and spent weeks on them (which meant at the time I had no computer to use. I had to either watch them, or do something else)  :P

Anyway, if your into humor, you should try out the Monkey Island games (3rd one in particular) but, you dont have to take my word for it. Pindarus would probably recommend it too  ;)

Hugo is fun, though admittedly the first one was tricky at parts and the second one was confusing. I never came close to getting full points in the second one, even with a walkthrough. The third Hugo game kicks butt though. ;)

Sadly, I'm played all Hugos as well... I even wrote a walkthough for the first one :P Those were some of the stupidest most annoying games I've ever played. I can't believe the guy who made them still makes money off them (or so he supposedly claimed, as he disallowed the distribution of a remake made for one of them  :-\)

I think it sucks how the guy who started it made the first two but then someone else took over for the third and fourth :-\, he said that they didnt continue on how he would have :-\

He also said that big whoop was exactly what it was named ;B, so LucasArts turned big whoop into somethin important when it wasnt going to be :), although if the original guy had have continued with the series then Murray would have never came along :'(

Still a great series though ;-D

Though there was some debate as to weather or not they where “adventures” or not I do have to add “Myst” to my list of favorites.  They had really strong graphics, neat design, and good mood. I remember having to bribe my grandmother to buy me a copy of “Myst” because it was full $20 then she was willing to spend (Christmas was it?)

Even though it was produced by Presto, “Myst III” was amazing!  â€œUru” stinks though, weak sauce…

And isn't MI5...some british agency or something?
Title: Re:What's Your Favorite Adventure Game Series?
Post by: Jeysie on March 21, 2004, 09:01:33 AM
I never really liked MI2, to be honest. I mean, it was a good game, but it felt like way too much of a jump in attitude from the first one. If there had been a sort of in the middle transition game, and MI2 had been MI3, I probably would have liked it more. Although it still would have suffered from several total WTF? puzzles. (The whole wrench thing was just really dumb, IMHO.) I agree the end credits were hilarious, though. They know adventure gamers pretty well!

I loved MI3, myself. It had more of the feel of the first game, and I don't like facial hair on guys. ;)

A 5th monkey Island, you say? Well, I may have some good news for you Bushie...

(you might know this already, if so, just smile and nod and make me feel good...  ::) )

I read an adventure gaming article just yesterday telling of a bunch of LucasArts programmers/artists that split off to form an independent adventure game company. Apparently a game called "A Vampyre Story" is in the works using the tried and true SCUMM dialogue tree... (the system used in the Monkey games) If we A-Gamers make that game a big success... they just might be able to convince LucasArts to work on a new MI game... Well, atleast, heres hoping... Talk to Pindarus for the details (he sent me the link.)

Monkey Island: Probably the first time I realized adventure games could be funny and engaging.

Kings Quest: Always cutting edge graphics and story telling.

Gabriel Knight: Incredible weaving of mythology and mystery.

I highly recommend playing Beyond Good & Evil...of course it does take a touch of action gaming skill (like Zelda combat), but overall it's one of the best games of 2004 in the action-adventure genre.  Plenty of puzzles, exploration, plot development, and fighting to keep you drooling for days....and if that doesn't excite you, then go get Ratchet & Clank 1, 2, and 3 for melee mayhem.

hehe ancient thread!

I think my most favourite is probably Laura Bow. The first one just had so much to do and find out for its time. I must have played through at least 5 times and still now I've never gained "Super Sleuth". And there was that weird stature that zooooomed accross the horizon which I could NEVER get to repeat when I wanted it to :(

The second one unfortunately didn't like my computer too well and I only got up to the guy who was killed with a porcupine (GENIUS!).

I'm gonna go with Monkey Island on this one, especially on the first one when they made a joke about the old sierra games where Guybrush would fall off a cliff and it'd say thank you for playing monkey island (or something like that) i hope you saved! and guybrush flies back up on the cliff and says, "Rubber tree," XD

I'd have to say the Gabriel Knight games are easily my favorite. 3 very fine, high-quality games, plus they have unique characters, mostly-logical puzzles, and a great psychological horror atmosphere.

Agreed three VERY Awesome games, I mean thats one of the few games where I would feel emotinaly involved with the characters and such.

The Monkey Island games are my next fave. Fun, colorful characters and settings, and more witty humor than you can shake a rubber-chicken-with-a pulley-in-the-middle at.

This wasn't mine, I mean I guess Guygrush is smart but who can respect a hero who states just beforing leaving his training island that he no longer needs a sword to be a pirate???? I mean he spent all that time practicing sword fighting and then just dumps it?

As for King's Quest... I smell a lynching coming on with this, but, oh well. I like the KQ *universe*. I think there's a lot of intriguing characters, relationships, situations, lands, and whatnot to play with. But for the most part, I feel the games, while fun, never completely touched on the full potential of all of it. There's a lot of stuff they could have had fun with exploring in-depth, but it either got glossed over or tossed out, I feel, in the need to keep things "family-friendly". (sigh) It's like Roberta created this whole great world, then had absolutely no idea what to really do with it. No wonder it took a fanfic to get me to give the series another chance. :P

Yeah I have to agree with you the first two didn't have as much in deepth as the later ones do. Clearly KQ8 is evident of this though I mean... what was she thinking? The AGDI KQ2 was sooooooo much better then Sierra's so much more story and foreshadowing was done that I can't play the original kq2 now lol.

Peace & Luv, Liz

I never understood Myst. My mom got me one game and though the graphics were cool, I couldn't figure out a thing. It scared me...

Yeah, I'll admit that at first Myst did scare me, but Myst and Riven (the sequel) are some of the best games I ever played. Why not give them another go?

Judging by the state of my room the cd is probably never to be seen again. XD But I'll look for it.

King's Quest and Space Quest for me!  (I have yet to play KQ3, SQ4 or SQ5 all the way, though.)

I really need to play more commercial adventure games.

I loved SQ4 and 5 though 5 less so. It was too gross. I liked QGF and KQ

I've played Return to Zork. :P

The problem with Zork, is that it's a text adventure game without graphics, I've found those games to be extremely tedious, especially with text parsers, in particular "Softporn" by Sierra: you had to type in PAY DRIVER and I just kept typing PAY MAN or GIVE MONEY TO MAN.  ::) :P

I liked Zork Nemesis, but the Zork series doesn't count as my favorite since I absolutely despised Return to Zork, and couldn't be bothered with the text games :P

Not all Zork games are text adventures - the later games, namely Return to Zork, Zork Nemesis and Zork: Grand Inquisitor are graphical first-person adventures (FMV on 3D scenes, IIRC) ;)

You could kill yourself ONCE in Secret of Monkey Island, and I think there was also a joke death as a Sierra parody. :P

well, gabriel knight all 3 of them, kings quest series of course, monkey island, leisure suit larry, space quest, laura bow, etc...  the only ones I never really got into were the cop ones

I couldn't really get into those either, mostly because of all the dead ends and text parsers, though.  :P ::)

I wish I could get some of the Police Quest games.  Unlike many fantasy or science fiction adventures of its time, the Police Quest series seems to have a genuine 80s feel.

For the record, I still like King's Quest and Space Quest.  Ben Jordan: Paranormal Detective is a good freeware series, too.

Hey my favorites were always the KQs above everything else.

But there is always a soft spot in my heart for all the Monkey islands, the Kyrandias, sam and max, basically any of the classic lucasarts games, especially the indiana jones games (which I don't believe anyone has mentioned).  I have to say that my all time favorite adventure games were QFG even though they are "technically" RPG's.  It was still an adventure for me.

Quest on Daventry citizens......
