Title: In the 90s
Post by: DancingMagicDance on December 28, 2003, 06:43:58 PM

Hi

Is it true that in the early 1990s, there was a lot of Myst vs. King's Quest going on. Like there was two main groups of computer game fans, the Myst fans and the King's Ques fans. And wasn't Myst compared to KQ alot (In terms of importance and impact on the gaming industry), and that the people who made Myst boasted how in their game you "Don't die every 5 minutes.'' and that their game was realistic and all. I also think that the fact that in 1994 King's Quest was already a tried and true staple and also the fact that 7 wasn't really well received and it's cartooney graphics compared to Myst's major 3D engine had to do with it ''stealing KQ's thunder''

Fair enough, although in this case the "newbie" had a deleterious effect on far more than one "incumbent".

And some LucasArts adventures had the whole "You can't die" thing before Myst came out... I guess they just didn't make a big enough deal about it. ;)

I've never played Myst...  ::)
Wasn't it more First-person vs. Third-person adventures rather than whether you can or can't die? If I'm not mistaken, Myst wasn't the first of those around either  ;)

And regarding which is better - Like the on the analogies DanceMagicDance brought up, it's really a matter of taste  8)

True enough, Storm... if you want to get technical, The 7th Guest was the orignal "first-person adventure". (And the first "Myst-like" game, IMHO, for that matter!)

Although I think "Myst-like" is a better adjective for Myst and its clones... (somehow "7th-Guest-like" just doesn't work... ;) ) ...for example, The Space Bar is a first-person adventure that's like "third-person" P&C adventures in everything except the perspective, and there's probably at least a few others like that as well.

I did play Myst and 7th Guest too, excellent games.

I did like a lot 7th Guest, and yeah I remember those were "different" from what it was around that time, specially when Myst sort of came out, I remember everyone was making a big deal about it, thats why I actually got to play it, I think it was "ok", not what I actually expected (since everyone brainwashed me sort of like Myst the best game ever) and when I got to play it, to me it was alright, just no as spectacular as everyone told me it was :P

haha good to know I'm not the only one who felt that way, because I felt Myst was ok, yeah... but I felt it did lack of so many other things as you name it. And yeah, I did start the game but at some point of it I lost interest of it and I just stopped playing it... :p

I dont think it was a bad game, but its certainly not one of my favorites either. :p

well as to reply to storm yeah that I would totally agree maybe 7th guest was more puzzles than adventure, but if thats the case I think Myst its pretty much the same, to me it had not very much of an "adventure" feeling :/, it may be just my personal opinion anyways.

I never played Myst but the reviews I've read about it never convinced me to go and buy it, just not my style, although I did enjoy T7G and T11H, the sequel. There were two big adventure blocks, LA and Sierra at that time IMO, and everyone apart from that had to try hard and break inbetween those two blocks, so they had to make enough publicity. Myst is in the first place puzzle, maybe with a bit of adventure-spice, but that doesn't do it for me. KQ (1-7), LSL, MI, GF, The Dig, Full Throttle, Broken Sword (I think I'll stop at this point or my list is going to get too big) DID.

Myst always frustrated me. I thought it was the whole 1 person perspective thing, but I found myself enjoying Sierra's Shivers a lot.

I never understood Myst popularity either to tell you the truth. Even if the game was beautiful in its time, there was no way to rival the 7th Guest beauty, which graphically was probably the best looking game of its time, and it stayed that for a couple of years.

Myst left me cold. 7th Guest wasn't AMAZING, but I kinda enjoyed it. I will never understand how it is (i think it still is) the biggest PC game bestseller.

Quote from: Storm on January 01, 2004, 05:31:09 PMI never thought of games like T7G as anything like adventures... I was sure everyone made the same distinction between adventure and puzzle games  ::)
Me neither, but then again, my definition of 'adventure' is pretty specific. 8)
