I couldn't beat any of them without some hints... ;D. However, I thought that KQ4 and KQ5 were really hard. All of the KQ's without the automatic point and click thing were pretty tough for me. I've heard KQ6 is the hardest because of the "cliffs," but once again, I haven't played it so my opinion is tainted.
I'm going with KQ3. I haven't played it myself, but I know there's a whole timed section and that Manannan keeps appearing out of no where and killing you or something, lol. ;D
I only played a little of KQ4, and the rest I've used hints at some point or another. Oh yeah, I never played MoE either so I'm not sure how hard it is. :P
The easiest KQ for me was KQ7, I think I only looked for hints once or twice. :D
MOE was the hardest because I was perpetually afraid of dying (though that was easily solved by delving into the cheat system a bit ;)). But sadly, I don't think I ever made it through any King's Quest without a walkthrough the first time around. After the first time, though, I can get through them just fine. ;)
Actually...for anyone without a hint guide, KQ1 was almost impossible (The rumpelstilkskin riddle).
I still haven't finished 3, and I've used a walkthrough. Pretty pathetic, huh?
I didn't think that 8 was too hard. Especially the end. The ending was probably the lamest part of the game. I mean, why did he keep disappearing to let me put more mask pieces on the altar? Anyone who's played games like Zelda or Final Fantasy knows that the final boss should be durn near impossible to beat. I think that instead of the bad guy disappearing, you shoulda just knocked him into a corner or something and while he was trying to get up, you'd run up and put another piece on the altar, repeat repeat repeat until the portal thing opens, and then knock him into the swirly vortex.
Hmm...The Tierra remake of KQ2 is hard. I can't get past it...
I found KQ2+ rather easy myself... it has no dead-ends, and point & click is usually easier than parser. I finished it without any hints, and the only REALLY difficult thing I can recall was the swamp 8)
Yeah that swamp thing is where I'm stuck
Want a hint? ;)
I'll take one anytime...PM me though.
Kings Quest 8(I couldn't even finish the demo :( )
...hardest to beat, eh? I always try to win the game with the highest score possible. So from that aspect it is KQ 1, with the infernal gnome name riddle. Even when I got the name, it was hard.
But to just make it through to the end regardless of the score, I'd have to say KQ 4. Although that was the first KQ that I finished with full score without any hints. It was definately one of the best KQ's.
KQ7 was the easiest but the ch5 in the little town..cant think of name right now but i was hard lol the one with a hippo as a china store owner..dont remember it that much lol
as for the hardest..was defintiely number 3-1 but if i had to choos eone it would be 1.

You must mean Falderal, and the bull in the china shop ;)
MoE was definitely the most painful, and made it feel like that game was lasting forever! ;)
In reality, I'd say KQ4 was the most difficult. I did everything perfectly except for one thing, and still couldn't beat it because I didn't have the damn lantern. All I had to do was "return diamonds," but it was far too late for that by the time I figured that out. Consequently, I had to start the game all over from scratch *groan*

I actually found that to be one of the easier puzzles. But, then, I play around a lot with cryptograms, letter substitutions/alphabet inversions, etc.
Okay. I totally take it back. After beating KQ 3 & 4 once more for old time's sake, I wish to renounce my previous opinion. KQ 3 (not KQ4) is the hardest.
What drove me most crazy about KQ 3 was the number of puzzles that just involved waiting around. Like, you'd be in one location, and you'd think that nothing was happening, so you'd leave. But, in reality, you'd want to go to that location and wait ten minutes for something to happen.
I hated that "inaction" could be a puzzle. Drove me nuts!
Also of nuissance was having to wait and wait and wait just for something as trite as the wizard going to sleep.
So, yeah, upon reconsideration, KQ 4 ain't so bad. ;)
I agree. To rush off and do a dozen quests as fast as you can is infinitely easier than to be told to sit around and wait for six minutes to solve a single quest. KQ3 definitely was the harder of the 8.
KQ8 was probably the most painful to play through though ;)
Definately KQ4. I didn't know what I was talking about when I made this. That game is...HARD!
-The whale puzzle
-The cave from hell
-The troll
-THE CHASM!!@#*!!arrgh...
-The swamp
-The witches
-The graveyard deadends
-The ogre
Basically every puzzle in this game was hard. Some (cough cough Chasm cough cough) were too damn hard, cheap. Anyhow, I died far more in this game than any other KQ game...and I never got to the end, breaking my shovel ONCE too many and getting stuck.
ROAR!
The original riddle in KQ1 --- the original version -- not the remake with the name backwards really was hard for me too.
Hardest -- MOE and then KQIII
I thought that KQ3 was the hardest. I've yet to beat it, and I've even had the help of many walkthroughs. It's the stuff with the time-limit that really frustrates me.
Are you kidding about KQ5 being hard dude? About 90% of the puzzles are obvious, and the rest is mazes which aren't challenging, just annoying.

Some of it was quite tough. There were a few things (like the inn and the forest) that had me stumped for quite a while. Definately not the hardest, though.
