Title: A necessary evil?
Post by: Jstny on February 18, 2004, 07:03:54 AM
:D  Does anyone have a favorite KQ or QFG bad guy or girl?  We all know that the games would not be the same without them.  You know what that means, evil is a necessary part of life, with every bit of good, there has to be a little bad.

My favorite is not a person, but a monster.  I like the Dark One.  Though he never really entered the land of Mordavia, he dug his claws in and did everyhting he could to corrupt the valley.  He did all this from a gap between dimensions...now THATS evil.

My other favorite is Manannan.  Not only was he evil and rotten to the core, he single handedly allowed KQ4, KQ5, 6 and 7 to happen.  Without him kidnapping Alexander, the prince never would have disfigured him, Rosella would have been eaten by the dragon, Alexander would have probably grown up to be a spoiled softy, Mordack would not have been ticked off at the Royal Family, and Cassima would have never been saved.  She would not have invited Alex to her kingdom, Abdul would have killed her off and Rosella would never have jumped into the pool because Alex would be the next heir to Daventry's throne and his mother would have been bugging him.

Who is your favorite baddie?

Interesting assesment of Manannan's influence!  He was the first KQ baddie I was introduced to since KQ3 was the first I played.  But aside from the main baddies there are so many random monsters that I don't really have a favourite.  Lolotte and her goons come to mind as some I find particularly cool, though.  I'd love to see what they look like in more than a few pixels!   ;D

so, so true Jstny, indeed there is always have to be a downside to good in order to make the plot flow, and in fact that is one of the most exciting things from kq9, and why the plot is so appealing, the balancing is perfect and it is as good that it catches your soul :P

I can't say which fav bad one I like cuz its from KQ9 ;[ but dont worry... :P maybe I will spoil it in the journal someday! :D <3

*writes down on things to do* :P

Funny you neglected to mention KQ3 ;)

I don't really have a favorite... but I'll go with KQ6's Abdul Alhazrad. Maybe it's just because I recently played through KQ6 again, but I loved the cutscenes of him and the genie ;D

Katrina in QfG4 was pretty cool. Mannanan was also good, as was Abdul. Hmm..maybe that's a reason Alex's games seem so popular. Really good villains!

I honestly don't like any of the bad guys in the KQ series, and I haven't played QfG, so I can't name a favorite there. I suppose if I had to pick a favorite, it would have to be Mordack, even if he was stupid and got killed by being rained on. All the other bad guys were bad just for the purpose of being bad. Like Lolotte wanted Pandora's Box just so she could have all the evil in the world, and Malicia was just like "blow it up" and didn't really have much of a reason.
Personally, I like bad guys that you might be able to sympathise with. Thats why I like Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII, because its like, you see where he's coming from. That's why Mordack is probably my favorite; cause in 5, he was out for revenge cause some young punk turned his brother into a cat. I'd be mad if someone turned my sister into an cat.

I hope the enemy in KQ9 isn't lame...

Well, in Cassima's case, it wasn't that difficult. It was just kinda like "pointy end goes into bad guy"

Cassima's not a bad girl, but she must have toughened up during her ordeal with Mordack. I'll bet she has lots of fun with Alex.  ;)  All princesses should learn how to protect themselves from bad guys.

I'm guessing Von Glower and Malia Gedde are villains from the Gabriel Knight series. Is Von Glower a werewolf and Malia Gedde a voodoo witch?

Since some people named their favorite "bad guy", from games besides KQ/QfG, I'll post two.

Favorite video game "bad guy" of all time=Gunther(Deus Ex1, if I had the choice, he would have lived thru the game :'( )

Favorite KQ/QfG "bad guy" of all time=Sea serpants, from KQ1 Remake(the one from Sierra)

Ive NEVER understood people's obsession with sephiroth. IMHO Square really did a good job botching both his, and Cloud's, personalities. That dont act and respond realistically at all. For instance, the idea that Sephiroth went from furious about finding out he had been created through the injection of Jenova cells to believing he had a 'mandate' to rule with the thing he was partly created from makes no sense. I could understand him being angry with Shinra and going all out against them in revenge... but thats about it. You dont turn from disciplined soldier, to power hungry lunatic in one night.

The only thing going for him is that he looks cool, and Square spent more time on him than, say, Ultimecia (FF8.)
