Any possibility of returning to the Green Isles to finally get inside Chessboard Land? :D
All I can say is that we are going beyond what was seen in the overall Green Isles in KQVI
;)
Do you mean plotwise, graphically, or both?
places-wise :D
Woohoo! King's Quest Chess! XB
I can't wait to see what is beyond, I wonder if it is like the chessboard in the book "Through the Looking Glass". ;)
Could this mean a reutrn of the Red and White Queens? :D
Or maybe even getting past the Black Widow.....Hmmmm ;)
lol, welcome to our forums Celli! :D
I see you already liked hanging around here and speculating with the project director :P lucky you you havent got a " :suffer: " in reply :P lol, he did actually answered :D

I'm guessing that's good then that I haven't been laughed at yet. ;)

he tends to tease ppl A LOT, but when I say a lot is that he even tries to share new info (or spoilers :P) then he confuses the hell out of everyone :P

Now, if I remember correctly...isn't there a piece of artwork that is of a giant chessboard???
:suffer: :suffer: :suffer:
Catherine
In the arts section there is a piece of art of a rotten chess board in that dark shadow land which we don't know it's name yet and it's not land of the dead. Hmmm. WHAT IS IT? Please not the suffer!
See, I'm not part of the crew, so I don't know for sure. I was just pointing out that fact.! lol

Technically, I never saw the title. When I clicked on it under Media and then Art of the Week, I never saw a title.
I really believe we should be able to get into Chessboard Land and the Beast's castle! How could Sierra be so cruel and not let us see them in the first place??? J/K
Cat
Yeah, that was cruel. I so wanted to go into the chesslands! Now, I finallly can!

Oops! *Covers eyes* I didn't see that! Looks like Cesar let something slip!
Cat
Or maybe he just wants us to think that something slipped. ;)
Noooo, :o Not Cesar. He wouldn't do that! (Can you just see the sarcasm dripping off of that?) lol
Cat
Cesar's "slips'" are never unintentional! ::)
they aren't, are they?

LOL
;D
Are those dialogue lines from KQ9?? :o
I recognize the first one! Check out Male 2 in the Online Auditions sides (http://www.tsl-game.com/join/onlineauditions/sides.php). :P
Haha, the first one is a joke one of the readers made in the middle of a line from the auditions. The second is also from auditions, but instead of reading the word "slowly" in the "Male Evil", he said "slowsly" then paused and said that: "Slowsly, hm!" in a british accent in the middle of the speech - it was very amusing:)
The third is Cesar's little catch phrase for somehting being really good -Shiiiiiiiine! (I don't know where he got it either!)
Aw... it sounds like Harrison and I missed all the fun audition stuff!
Peace & Luv, Liz
Will it be like Edgar Rice Burroughs' The Chessmen of Mars? In that novel, the Martians engaged in tournaments with live chessmen, who battled on the chess squares in front of crowds of spectators. The object of the game was to capture the Princess of the opposing side.
You can play the game at http://www.pathguy.com/chess/MartianC.htm (http://www.pathguy.com/chess/MartianC.htm).
Will Chessboard Land be like that? Or will it be like Archon Ultra?
As long as we see Chessboardland, it doesn't matter what's in it. :P
I was never good at regular chess... :P I'm much better at playing Kill Chess anyway. ;)
As for Chessboard Land, "only Chess Pieces are allowed in Chessboard Land" so why would Cesar suggest it is suddenly accessible? ;)
QuoteAs long as we see Chessboardland, it doesn't matter what's in it.
This forum is described as "the place for the fans to speculate about KQ9's secret plot," so I was speculating.
QuoteAs for Chessboard Land, "only Chess Pieces are allowed in Chessboard Land" so why would Cesar suggest it is suddenly accessible?
Well, in Burroughs'
The Chessmen of Mars, humans (of the Martian variety)
were chesspieces, so it is possible that Chessboardland may be accessible to humans, provided that humans are allowed to be chesspieces.

That was in KQ6... in KQ9, there could be extreme circumstances that would allow you to enter Chessboard Land - say, if all the inhabitants there turned into stone and there's no one to stop you :P
Or, as fluxmaster suggested, you may be able to turn yourself into a chess piece... this actually sounds better ;)

Why ask us, anyway? haven't they let you read the plot yet? (If they did, you should have ended your post with a :suffer:)

Same here! I thought there was some way of getting in. :P
Me too! When I was playing KQ6 for the first time, I gave one of my online friends regular updates. During one of these talks I asked him how you got into Chessboard Land. He told me you couldn't get into Chessboard Land, and I was like, "Well that totally sucks!" :P It's the drive of every devoted adventure game player, IMHO... stick an interesting-seeming place in front of us that we can't get into, and we'll complain about it. ;)
Peace & Luv, Liz
When i first played it and thought you could go into Chess Board land i used to paint a mental picture of what it would look like ;D
It looked pretty good in my mind and that just made me wanna go their and look at it :D, then i found out you couldnt go in there so i started getting mad >:(
Well, I hope Alexander doesn't just excercise his royal powers in order to get into Chessboard Land. He'd probably become very disliked among the people, seeing as humans should never be allowed access.
And the "moving as a chesspiece" idea seems too odd to me. After all, neither the Knights nor the Queens (the only pieces we have seen) moved like their respective chesspieces, if I can recall correctly.
Chessboard Land looked a bit empty. I tried going in but I only saw black and white squares for miles and miles. ;)
On my first playthrough of King's Quest VI, I always thought there was some way of getting into Chessboard Land, too. It was a bit disappointing to learn that there isn't, but it doesn't bother me anymore. It looks like a dull place anyway.

Are not the squares white and red? I know the pieces are, at least...
I was thinking the same thing. I'm pretty sure it's red and white.
Cat
Ah, I thought they were black and white. Been a while. ;) Though chessboards don't always match the colors of the pieces, yanno. ;)
I wonder if we'll ever see the Kings, or the Bishops. lol
The squares are purple and creamish
The pieces are Red and white
I'm watching it right now... both in a KQ6 screen and a KQ9 one ;)
Leak the information or i stab you with the kitchen knife Cesar XB
....Racx, it's a plastic one ; ) ...besides if you'll stab him he will be leaking blood instead of info ; /
how did you know it was plastic ???, i mean... this aint no plastic XD
I must say that it's been a while since I played the game (spring break is this next week, so hopefully I'll be able to play it). I guess I'm just remembering it wrong. BUT I will post what it is once I get there!
Cat
Its definitely Red and white cos i just booted the program and loaded the save ;D, and my video card work well :P
Quick question: are there different versions of the game...you know, the English version is red and white, another one is black and white, and another is purple and creamish? Not sure, but maybe that could be a reason we are coming up with different colors? :-\
Cat
it maybe because of different game versions, but it also could be because of different video cards
or it could be because there are a few dillusional ppl in here ;P
besides you'll need the scarf of the red queen to distract something, don't you?
Oh, the pieces are definitely red and white. I'm 100% positive on that.
I just turned on KQ6. Cesar was right, the squares are purple and cream-coloured/peach beyond any doubt.

Regarding the pieces not moving according to their appropriate steps - the queens are allowed to move pretty much every which way they want, so no problem there, and the knights aren't moving that much... it could go either way :S
Now, it's been YEARS since I've played chess, but don't knights move in an "L" shape? So they could be moving appropriately.
Cat
Yes they do move in an "L" shape... but IIRC the knights in KQ6 don't really do the "L" :S
You see, logically there should have been pawns for the soldiers...but he**...knights look cooler..

Thats correct
Mike had posted a pic of chessboard land, but per my request, he took it off...I thought it was fun to continue the debate. And yes, I have played chess, and yes, it has been years since I've played it, but I still have a general idea of how the pieces move!
Cat
The knights in King's Quest 6 definitely did not move in an L-shape. I played the game again not more than a few days ago. I remember because I was specifically paying attention to see if they did. They move in a small straight line, and turn to face Alexander. They move horizontally, but not vertically. More like a rook or a king or a queen than a knight.
I'm guessing that the knights were designed to be guards, not based on how they're supposed to move. ;)
That's kinda sad how the Knights in KQ6 didn't move in an L shape. They could have easily made them move in a straight line towards Alex, then move one step horizontally, moving either in a path like this: _| |_ or this: |_ _|. ::)
They could have done it like this if Alexander was in the middle
|___ ___|
O
BTW Alexander is the O

Will your programmers be as lazy? ;)
So... are you guys just blatantly disregarding the fact that they didn't move like chess pieces in KQ6 now?
Nobody said the KQ9 chessboard pieces would move according to chess rules yet... but even if they do, you could always say that the KQ6 knights were supposed to do the full "L" but haven't done so due to the lack of room/they did do a full "L", but you didn't see it because of the poor graphics ;P
KQ6 didn't have poor graphics, in my opinion. In any event, it would've been clear if it was the full L.
But let's stop this pointless debate. I don't want it to erupt into an argument.
POINTLESS?? what do you mean, pointless!?!? :o :o
Yeah, ok, I have to admit it's pretty pointless... We'll just have to wait for KQ9 to come out and see if they walk like chess pieces should 8)
So we start of talking about chessland ;D, then we move onto the colours of chessland :-|, then we debated about the shape the knights move in and now we just stop :(, i dont think so XB
Will Chessland be like a normal town with buildings or will it be some what different ???
normal town with buildings???
We are not THAT boring ;)
...so what are you guys? hahaha ....I mean if it's not going to be a normal town... what is it going to be? is the 'town' related to chesspieces (ie. towers and such?)? and will there be a diversion between red and white?
*turns off Cesar's ability to post a :suffer:-smiley*
So like the castle pieces will be the buildings ;D, thanks for the info Cesar ;)
EDIT - You didnt need to delete the post reaveling that info cos its not like you'll get killed ;)

Sooo, that's what I get for sleeping in just a little! (I didn't even sleep an extra hour!). I miss the spoiler! Not fair! Cesar, you should have left it up for about an hour or two!
Cat
we are lucky we saw it, he put it on for about 5 to 10 minutes
WHAT?! Cesar posted a spoiler?!? >:(
/me opens up a can of whoop-ass !!! ;D
Haha, hey as far I'm concerned, Cesar only said we would never be so boring as to put normal plain boring buildings in Chessboard Land.
He never said if we WERE putting buildings in Chessboard Land. Or that there was an inside Chessboard Land! Just that if we did, it wouldn't be boring.
And as far as the movement argument, perhaps the "chess move" laws only apply when they're on the board itself. They were only on the bridge in KQ6. Moving that way all the time would be, well, rather impractical really.

yay!!... we're going to see some ass-wooping!! ...you are going to that on the forums are you (so we could enjoy ; )
enough about those buildings!! there is no use in teasing other forummembers who were not so lucky to see it ; )
Another question.... what are the odds to witness a chess game in chessland ; ) ...hahaha something like a war going on or so ; )
That would be neat. And I remember how the Red and White Queen use to argue. It would be easy to have like a war going around.
Although... we have to remember how big the King's Quest world is. Like this game should take maybe 30-40 hours to play not using a hint book. ChessBoard land is only a part of the Isle of Wonder, and thats only a part of the Green Isles. And thats out of 8 different lands. I don't think it would be lucrative to have a whole bunch to do in chessboard land.
well not all lands are visti, but then again there new lands too, so perhaps they stay more focussed on a few lands (ie. chessboard).
besides if the game can hold my interest (which it undoubtely does ; ) I have no problem playing it for 100+ hours ; )
i hope its like a FF game ;D, cos they usually have 60 hours to 100 hours of game play ;B
I don't hope that it's a FF game, cuz I want a true adventure game ; ) ...but I agree with the time to spend, wouldn't mind that at all (btw 60-100 hours!! what were you doing that it took you so long?? ; )
i dont mean like a ff game, i mean like a ff game with the time comparison ;)
I meant that i wanted it to be a KQ game that is the length of an FF game ;B
chess game... hmmm.. I think I read that somewhere in the script.
I may be wrong tho...
:suffer:
naww... you can't be wrong about that!! ; )
....so I guess that would mean you are an active participant of the game... or not? if so which color are you? ...what does the outcome of the game leads to?
what new information do you have for us ;B
Information?? Someone has information?!?! :o :o
Hehehehe.... who said we have information? :suffer:

we cant tell you what he said cos we swore not 2 ;)
I don't swear... I only promise, and I keep those ; )
o..k another question about chezz-land. I've noticed that graham is at the green isle (at least isle of the crown -> art of the week) does that mean that you can get into chezz land with graham or... with someone else? ...with alex or... both or... ; )
If you can get into chezz land with graham, does that means that someting is wrong with alex? (why does graham have to 'adventure' in the green isles if alex is around?)
i meant that i promised ;B

...so; back on topic Chezz.... if we are going to play a chezz game in kq9 (like a mini game) i was wondering if you all know how to play chezz ; )
i like Chess, but i usually lose :-\
haven't played it for like 5 years ; ( ...noone would want to play against me ; /
note: this is not because I'm good at it or so, cuz I'm not ; ) ...I think it's because they either don't like me :'( ...or they don't like the game.... I hope it's the last ; )
I would play against you ;D, but its a bit hard cos we live at different parts of the world :-\
lol, a reason the more for a an online king's-chezz-game ; )
hahahaha... nvm ; )
I know how to play chess, on a basic level. But I'm more a reaction-type player, not a planning-type player. As a result, I usually get my butt kicked (by Harrison, typically, since he's the only person I really ever play chess with).
Peace & Luv, Liz
Yeah im not that good at planning either :-\, thats why i dont have a schedule for homework and all that ;D
lol, and we are keeping you from doing your homework ; ) hahaha
I used to be an avarage player, but since I haven't played it I might became much worse ; ) lol, but I was curious because IF (ie. Cesar hasn't posted anything about it, xcept that there would be a chessgame of some sort ) you were able to play a mini game chezz (in maxi size ; ) it would be fun but perhaps a bit hard for those who can't play chezz... ; /
Well, I can always get Harrison to solve it for me, if need be! ;D
Peace & Luv, Liz
i will release a Walkthrough for it ;)
lol, that would be fun ; )
i would make a walkthrough for the whole game ;D, but i would need other ppls help ;B
why is that??
...besides I don't like walkthroughs, they spoil all the fun from adventuring ; / ...but a walkthrough for a chessgame is just so cool ; ) ....don't think it's doable though, unless it reacts in the same pattern everytime
I would say it depends where you move ;), thats why i would need help ;D, we assign different moves to the different ppl that are helping ;B
isn't it just a good idea to figure out the fastest way to beat them?? ...i mean, it's a walkthrough, you don't need multiple way's to beat a chezz game, just one.
but I was wondering if a chezz game responds always the same way to a certain move (or a combination of) because in that case it would be possible to make a walkthrough, but it wouldn't really be an intelligent chezz game, would it ; )
Ok well i will try to make a chess Walkthrough ;B
I would probably lose the chess game. I have no ability to strategize. I play chess, I remember how the pieces move, but I have no ability to win a game!

If I ever won a chess game, it was because my opponent was on a "How did you say this piece moves?" level :S
Does anyone remember the chess puzzle from The 7th Guest, where you had to put 8 queens on a chessboard without them threatening each other? what a mindbender... can't even remember how I solved that :P
Maybe this is too late, but I would really appreciate it if conversations weren't overly long. A few of those types you posted are great, but I've been playing Metal Gear Solid the Twin Snakes recentely, whihc is a great game, but the over-abundance of long-winded cutscenes really get to me.
Lovely conversation ;D, i believe that FFX had to many cut scenes but if the game hooks you then you come to love the scenes ;D, That my opinion anywayz :D
hmmm... I don't really mind long conversations if it brings more depth in the game. As long as it is an interresting plot (and I'm sure it is ; ) it will keep my attention.
I love conversation trees! In Monkey Island and Grim Fandango, I always try to make each conversation as long as possible.
I love cutscenes ;B
Haha, cutscenes eh?
Cesar wanna comment on *that* one? Hahaha....
:suffer: :suffer: <he's laughing this time!
I also like conversation trees... but sometimes I'm afraid I'm missing out bits of conversation because of the choices I make in them :-\
Not always... sometimes they just tell you to bugger off after they told you the important stuff :P
They dont tell you to bugger off in Grim Fandango ;B
Some of them do ;)
I don't like conversation trees either for the same reason. I always want to see all ;)
KQ9 conversations are topic-based (Think GK)
I never got told to bugger of because i asked unimportant stuff first, and then asked important stuff so i would hear everything ;B

I never played GK, and I'm not sure I know what you mean! ;] Oh well...
Cat
i dont know what he means either :-\ :'(
What do you mean you folks haven't played Gabriel Knight? For shame! You must run out and get yourselves copies!
Hee, seriously, I'd say that GK1 is the best adventure I've played, and the other two have good spots on the rest of my list. But to answer the question right now...
Let's say that Gabriel is going to talk to his assistant, Grace. She helps him run his bookstore, and he's also asked her to... say... research a photo about a witch trial, and look up a book on witchcraft. So when you choose TALK, you'd get a list like...
Bookstore
Witch Trial Photo
Book on Witchcraft
And when you pick a topic, they'll talk about it.
In GK, the topics can also branch a bit. For instance, if while talking about the bookstore, Grace mentions she fielded a phone call for Gabriel, when you return to the topic list you'll now see Phone Call listed as something to talk about. I dunno if the KQ9 team went that route, though.
Peace & Luv, Liz
*runs out to get GK*
have not ime to play it though... wayy to busy, maybe later ; ( ...but I thought Cesar meant something like that, it is also used in other gamez (that i know)
How could i get GK ???

<whisper>download it</whisper>
<loud voice to distract the attention of the whispering> sooo... are we going to visit all the isle?? ; ) </load voice to distract the attention of the whispering>

I know it's used in Sanitarium, and I think in some of the QFG games as well. There's most likely quite a few games that use that system, I just can't think of more off the top of my head at the moment.

He should have said "like QFG3 and above" then :P
How did this thread go from Chessboard Land to downloading other games? lol Talk about major digression. :P
downloading games?? naww... we are talking about conversation trees/topics.... and since there would be some talk in chezz land (or so i think) it is quite on-topic ; )
yeah, we have topics branching from others. Conversations are very important in this game and while we take from the "natural freedom" from the player, sometimes we *force* them to go through all topics. If this game has a "downside" it's its linearity, but that's because I chose it to be that way. We more than compesate that with the cinematic feeling to it.
What downloading ???, no one ever talked about downloading games :-\
lol, you just did ; )
i did to didnt i XD
My AP Lit teacher always digresses in our class, so it's kind of one of my pet peeves to stay on topic. ;)
So are there anymore hints we could hear about the fact of CBL? (Chessboard Land if you didn't catch that ;))
racx and B'rrr's idea ;P
;] ...I don't deserve credit Racx... you are the true genius ; ) ....but i was wondering about that too. if the chezz pieces are ppl... the board is the land, what would the city be like?
it wouldn't be like a normal city accordong to Cesar.... that's why we thought it had someyhing to do with the 'tower'-pieces of chezz....
Chess pieces living in a chess piece shaped castle. Wouldn't that be like us living in homes shaped like people?
Good point, Celli...and it makes plenty of sense! I personally would not want to live in a house shaped like a person! :P
Cat
Imagine how popular the Bill Clinton house would be. :P At least in the Red Light Districts. :P
Well maybe they have castles to live in ;B, just because they have castle pieces doesnt mean they wouldnt have castle buildings XD
there is no such thing as proper spelling on da internet ;), atleast thats what i believe ;D
Maybe Chess pieces have castles shaped like people, sicne people have castles shaped like chess pieces..... :-\
Yes they do :-\, but then maybe in chessland they dont ;)
Do you think that when the chess pieces go to war, it's a game of chess? That'd be kind of cool to see.
And you get to play the chess game ;D
No playing chess. I don't know how to play, so I'd lose. :P
hmmmm Cesar already said something about a chessgame.... but he didn't said that we could participate (play) or only watch.... i hope the first ; )
If we have to play, I hope it's not one of those split path type things. If you win you can go one way, or if you lose you have to go another way. I'll never get to take the winning way. :P
Maybe it will just be something that gives you extra points if you win, but you don't actually even *have* to play. That would be nice. Like..a mini-game!
yeah... mini games would be fun ; ) ...lol, i always love the cardgame at ff8 or the chocobo's at ff7 (actually that wasn't much fun later on, cuz i knew how to win all the time)
...still, love the minigames ; )
all the mini games are cool ;)
If there's a chessgame for the player to play (and I hope there is), there'll probably be a dialog, "Do you wish to skip this game? Yes, No," and if you click "No," you do not get the points for playing the game, but if you click "Yes," then you must win the chessgame to continue.
It would be nice if there were be different rules for "Kings Quest Chess," but I doubt that that will be the case.
I don't think they'll go for something as ordinary as a regular chess game. There will have to be some twist to it 8)
like Harry Potter chess :suffer:
Maybe trapped squares? If you put a piece on a certain square, the square flips over and your piece disappears or something. EEEP! Chess is too complicated for me without that! :P
dont give them ideas ;B
Nah, it would cost too much ;P
Not to mention set them back probably a year or so in production....
Details :S, What kinda details, lol ???
Script :S what kinda script... hahahaha
...well for all the things Cesar spilled today he deserves something...
*gives Cesar a brownie*
..there is more where that came from ; )
*gives Cesar a cheese cake !!!*
I will give you more if you send me the script :suffer:
YAY!! the betting started!!
*gives Cesar a car*
*gives Cesar a Mansion*
I think im winning :suffer:
*chickens out*
yeah... you are winning... but do you have a mansion? :o ..that you can give I mean :o??
i wished for one when i was a genie ;B, along with a never ending stash of money ;P
guess you were just as bad genie as I was :-\
i wished for many things too... but most of them never came out :'(
Yeah that sucks :'(, we dont stay on the titles long enough to work them out properly ;)
THe kind of details that make the game even more fun to play! :suffer:
And no handing out scripts to you folks, I'm afraid (well, if you get cast in a voice part, then some handing out). I'll beat Cesar before I let him hand that out! >:( :o ::) ;P

...sooooo, what is your favourite food?? ; )
ICE CREAM!!!!! Mmmmmmmmmmmmm....
Oh, you weren't talking to me, were you?
i say that she likes anything full of sugar, lol ;B
editing ppl, editing lol, geez :P
ever heard of post-production? :P its like the same, some work to do after its all done about what has just been done :P
the whole plot has been written since a few while ago :P
but it is a lot to go though and revise and such ;-D
So i guess you wont tell us which parts of the script you are editing ;-D ???
Well thanks for the support Storm :P
Any time! ;B
So the plot of KQ9 is really like that of the movie Pi (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0138704/)? Good to know. ;)
Peace & Luv, Liz
Actually, scary to know :o
Creepy movie! I haven't seen that one before...
Awesome! :)
Told you he'd say that ;P
That was ever-so-helpful, Cesar, thanks! :P
Hey, he just gave that HUGE spoiler on that interview. He must be still suffering over that :o
Well atleast he tried to spoil something ;) :suffer:
Tried... and succeeded ;B
And actually *I'm* the one currently editing Ch. 5, 7 and 8. :P
Yay!! Go Katie! :D
:suffer: :suffer: :suffer: :suffer:
