If you're having trouble thinking of what to write to Activision, or having trouble staying calm while you write, try this form letter. (And if anyone spots any typos or mistakes I've made PLEASE point them out -- the sooner the better, I'm mailing mine tomorrow afternoon!) It is highly encouraged that you contact Activision as well as signing the petition -- the more they hear, the more likely they are to respond!
To Whom It May Concern:
I, [your name here], am writing to you to express my disappointment in the Cease and Desist letter that Activision recently sent to Phoenix Online Studios in regards to The Silver Lining. The game was much anticipated by the fans of the King's Quest game series, which ended with King's Quest: Mask of Eternity an uncharacteristically violent game that, while a good game in and of itself, did not provide closure to the series. The team that has worked on creating The Silver Lining for the past eight years intended only to provide closure more befitting of the rest of the series. Even the original creators of the franchise, Roberta and Ken Williams, have expressed their own support for this fan-produced venture.
As I am sure you are aware, in 2005 a similar Cease and Desist letter was sent by Vivendi Universal to Phoenix Online Studios in regard to the same project. After negotiations with Phoenix Online Studios, an agreement was reached which satisfied Vivendi Universal and allowed them a degree of control over this project but allowed the project to continue. The team of Phoenix Online Studios has followed the terms of this agreement, and the fans of the King's Quest series have been very grateful for the opportunity provided by Vivendi Universal.
When previous fan-projects, such as the VGA remakes of King's Quest 1 and 2 by AGD Interactive were released, it spurred new interest in the King's Quest games as a whole. These free games reminded old fans of the game series, sparking them to purchase the King's Quest Collection. Many younger gamers also played these revisions and were introduced to the series. It is more likely than not that there would be a similar occurrence with the release of The Silver Lining, and that Activision could potentially make a profit from this fan-made project. The adventure game genre also seems to be gaining in popularity, as one takes a look at Telltale Games and the success they have had with releasing episodic graphic adventure games. This factor, combined with the release of The Silver Lining virtually guarantees an increase in sales of the King's Quest Collection, if not the Space Quest and Police Quest collections as well.
In summary, I implore Activision to reconsider the decision put an end to the production of The Silver Lining and allow this project to continue. The project has a long history of hard work and is both well-known and well-respected throughout the gaming industry. Activision may also potentially gain financially from this project.
Thank you,

You can submit your letter in one of two ways:
Print 'n Scan
----------------
1. Copy and paste the letter in the first post into your word processor of choice and replace [your name here] with your name.
2. Print out the letter and sign the bottom of it.
3. Scan the signed letter and save it on your computer as a PDF file (most scanning software allows scanned items to be saved as a PDF)
4. Email the PDF file to waltzdancing@msn.com
Print 'n Mail
----------------
1. Copy and paste the letter in the first post into your word processor of choice and replace [your name here] with your name.
2. Print out the letter and sign the bottom of it.
3. Mail the letter to the following address:
Adrienne Elliott
2650 Mayfield Lane
Las Cruces, NM 88007
No Printer or Scanner?
------------------------
Not a problem! Go ahead and copy and paste the letter in the first post into your word processor of choice and replace [your name here] with your name. Then save that document and email it to waltzdancing@msn.com with a note in the email giving your permission to Adrienne to sign your name on the Save TSL Petition (the name of the letter that is the petition). This will give Adrienne permission to sign your name on that petition and that petition only.
What about the Online Petition?
------------------------------------
Have you already signed the online petition? That's ok! Feel free to take part in the offline petition as well! Your signature on the online petition and a physical petition with your signature on it will carry a lot more weight than if you simply do one of the petitions. And likewise, if you have participated in the offline petition, feel free to sign the online petition as well. The two petitions go hand in hand with each other.
Thanks!
A note to people using Google Chrome (at least on a Mac) -- the email form does not seem to allow you to paste anything into it so you will have to type out your letter in that little box they've provided.
Or maybe it just hates me.
But either way, be prepared to type!
Cool. I didn't notice any typing errors.
Hey, do you think we will need a website for this? I don't want to get ahead of things, but it seems that an easy link like that, filled with info, and the info people keep asking like why we can't just change the names, would be helpful.
Just kinda one place where you can find out everything you need easily.
And then we could have some printible thing that you could sign and mail in to activision if the online petition falis.
just some thoughts.
I will probably mail mine today.

Yes a website is a very good idea! A place where we can put all this great information together in one place and serve as an anchor point for the Save TSL Movement (which, as of right now, consists of online petition, social networking anchors, letter writing, and media awareness).
If you would like to work on a website, then you have my complete support and the thanks of myself and all of our fellow fans and supporters. :)
If everyone will sign this I will be happy to fax it. Just email it to me on this site and It will go out the next day. :D
I printed out a letter and will mail it next time I go over to Moseley.
I attached a Word .doc (forum won't let me attatch a .docx) with the letter, date, their address, and spaces for your address and signature for those who want to print it out and send it by snail mail.

Hrmm... I think we should send them all to one person to snail mail in as was done before. Petitioning is largely about numbers and physical presence: hundreds or thousands of letters arriving at once has a lot more physical presence. I mean there are other options. We could mail them in waves for instance.
Was it cray who offered to collect them? Know someone did.
I think it was...
You guys are right. Mailing them one by one would be better. I was not here for the last C and D, so this is all new to me. How long did that one go on for?
To mail it in with snail mail, I mean. Didn't mean to ignore waltzdancing's offer to fax them. Don't know if we should do both or just one.

I wasn't here either, but I know Cat collected letters for two weeks and then mailed them all at once.
We should send them to cray with an extra stamp. Cause that would be a hell of a lot for one person to pay for all those letters.
I am taking mine and my sisters to the post office today. I may just do that. How do you wnat to organize the mailing? I am more than happy to mail them. I am located in New Mexico, yes it is a part of the US, A post office is right down from my house and I am happy to pay for the postage if you want. I can do the same thing Cat did, If you want to send it that is cool too. Just let me know. I want to help and am making time for TSL.
Whatever happens, we need to make sure that we are all sending them to the same person. PRobably either you or cray.
Well if you all want this to be the official offline petition that works for me. I will let cray chime in on this and we all can go from there.

Sounds good to me.
Well, i mean, this was not really intended or written to be a petition... this was meant for a letter-writing campaign to accompany the petition. I suppose we could quickly edit it and turn it into an offline petition, but I still think using the offline petition to follow up the online one is the best bet -- we don't want to appear disorganized.
Me too. The sooner we can get this cleaned up the sooner we can get the game and I can talk to my brother again, who just bought Guitar Hero >:( >:( >:( >:(
I don't think we are disorganized. We are organizing. Edit the written petition and either you or I can collect them. How long is the online petition active? We can collect letters until then and then mail them.
The online petition is active until the target goal of 100,000 signatures is achieved or until I make it inactive.
However, the offline petition was meant to be the 2nd phase of the movement campaign and what cray had written was meant to just be an opening salvo that lead into the offline petition.
However, seeing as this is a movement by the fans, it's easy enough to change that plan and I'm already modifying the overall plan to account for it.
The way I see it, the biggest problem with the online petition is it's general lack of weight. People don't take online petitions seriously. However, when coupled with an offline petition, an online petition gains a significant amount of weight and credibility. On the reverse side of the coin, the offline petition gains weight by having a much higher support count even if the physical amount of petitions is low.
So this is actually a great move. Maybe not according to the original plan mind you... but a great move nontheless. You know what they say about plans after all.... The best laid plans of mice and men...
should we change the letter thing to a petition, or should we just do the letter?
I mean, that many letters sent at once should have a decent effect. How many people on the online petition.... over 400. And thats in less than 2 days! So how about if they all send letters?
I am thinking that would be very powerful if we got enough people to send them.
So, cray, are you up for being the person who everything is sent to if we take that route?
That is true. And if we keep ourselves unpredictable, they will never know what will come next. If you need help re writting, let me know. My plans are on hold until further notice. ;D Procrastination!!
(Posted on: March 02, 2010, 12:06:38 PM)
Online petition is practically at 500 in two days. We will hit that today. We need to draw Activision's attention to that some how.
This may be too late and don't read too much into, because I'm not sure it's too big of a deal, but should we mention how they might be making money off King's Quest if they allow TSL to continue? I dunno, I don't want them to keep on saying no, but then turn around and produce a King's Quest game that's remarkably similar to TSL, ya know what I mean? I hope that made sense...
But you guys know best, you've done this once before. I only learned about this project not even 2 years ago, so I started following AFTER the thing with Vivindi went down. Just an idea.
Also, I'm in Europe until May, and I just wanted to let you know there are lots of international gaming blogs picking up on this. Who knew King's Quest was so popular over here (cause I know I didn't!). Also, when I googled "save the silver lining" it was the first story that popped up under Google News, on MTV's website...so good work everybody!
I say leave the letter as is and use it as the offline petition. If Activision gets a box full of this letter with a cover letter stating there is an online petition with over <x> number of signatures in addition to this, that's going to carry a LOT of weight. The wording of the letter is fine and can be easily made up for in delivery and presentation.
We just need to find a volunteer to collect the letters up (either via regular mail or via Cat's print->sign->scan->email method) and then send all the letters at one time to Activision (I would highly recommend return receipt on that package, btw... so there is a record of delivery... but that's a matter for later in the campaign).
I can collect and will take them both ways.

Cool. So should we send the letters to waltzdancing, and then she can send them in like a package to activision or something?
OR use cat's method?
We just need to make sure that we all know what is going on so that we all get this done the right way.
I guess the website could come in handy for that.

I say allow the ability to use both methods for submitting the physical petition. There will be people out there who have a printer AND a scanner and then there will be people who just have a printer. By accepting petitions both ways, we increase the physical petition count.
Of course, there's people like myself that don't have a printer OR a scanner... but then again, that paticular demographic is filled by the online petition. So there you go.
The website is a god send, it is a place to organize without threat of this forum being shut down because of us. Emailing them is good but if you can't e-mail them I can take snail mail too. Let me know how you want to do it and I will give you the information.
For those who don't have a printer or a scanner just email it and have your name printed on it, and I could write your name in. The more the better. I am undating my profile with the information you will need.

It's funny but at the same time horrible. I don't even look hispanic neither does Pj2. It just says Mexico and people freak.
Online Petition just passed 500 signatures (at 511 at the time of this post)
I walk away for two minutes -- just two! And look what happens -- New Mexico has seceded from the Union (or something)! :P
See, I like the idea of the online petition and offline petition, and that letter will certainly serve as the offline petition, but my idea was to -- as well as having the petitions -- have a sort of continual influx of communication from the fans as well. That's what saved Farscape when I was a part of that. (Of course, a lot of fans were also mailing the SciFi Channel stale crackers, which I suggest NOT doing even though it worked. :P)
That way, you have a sort uncountable mass of people hoping that Activision reconsiders, which is vaguely overwhelming, and THEN you receive this massive package which says "We have ____ signatures asking you to reconsider". It's a little deceptive, since a lot of those letters will come from people who signed the petition, but it makes us look like an even LARGER fan-base or at least a lot louder of a fan-base.
However, I'm not in charge. This is a fan-movement regarding a fan-project so if we'd just rather do the two petitions, I'm fine with that.
PS For those with no printer -- first of all, libraries tend to have printers or, like waltzdancing said, you can shoot her an email with your name *however* to keep this as legal as possible please also give her permission to forge your name on the Save the TSL Petition. (And, yes, you will have to refer to the document specifically when you do or you're basically giving her permission to steal your identity -- which, while she would never do that, is just a bad idea. :P)
And thanks for volunteering, Waltzdancing. I was willing, but my parents are not-too-fond of getting mail from strangers. :P
EDIT: Oh, and in regards to the financial portion of the document... I feel that's necessary. The bottom line for these people is, well, the bottom line. They care about money, that's it. If they make a new KQ, swell, although I'm sure it will be terrible. If they base it on the Silver Lining.... the team will have evidence of that and I'm SURE they'll sue for a BOATLOAD of cash. Either Activision will take that chance, and end up being sued themselves by fans (which is surprisingly new for them) or Activision will see the chance to profit off of someone else's work -- someone who they won't have to fire once the work is done, for a change -- and they will green light the Silver Lining. I hope, anyways.
Yes, I do need your permission to sign your letter, and would never steal any identities. I vote for Cray or Ober to be the leader, they know more about this and have been more active.
I will follow any orders that are passed my way. Starting today I will collect letters in any form, (A side note included with your permission to sign your name if needed.) I will collect the letters until I am told to go to the post office and I will mail them.
My contact information is on my profile. You can email me on this forum or to my personal email which I check daily, and pops up with a notice when a letter comes in.
We can do this people! Hope is a flame that will not be put out by a howling wind but we are providing light for those who worked hard on the project and for the fans! We can do this, we can fight the power that marshalls before us. (Sorry had to slip in a quote from Gandalf)
I would be more than happy to do the collections... but since your already in place to do it, then I say let you do it. Besides, I'm busy manning the online petition and the social networking anchors and doing my best to keep the campaign movement in the eyes of the media and supporters (if your on Facebook, keep an eye out for Save TSL ad impressions here within the next couple of weeks).
Atec, when you read this thread can you update the Save TSL website accordingly?
Thanks again for all the hard work you all are doing! :)
You just take care of the on line petition and the networking, I don't know how to any of that. Divide and conqueror is the best way to go.
(Posted on: March 02, 2010, 01:17:21 PM)
Is there anyway to have the people who signed the online peptition know about the mail in copy?
The petition site does not allow form mailing so the easy answer is no. While it would be possible to click on each user and send them a PM to tell them about it, I'm not sure that would be an effective use of time, as there is a link to the TSL forums already on the petition and I would assume people signing the petition would visit the forums here and check in from time to time to see what news there is.
I have, however, added a link to the Save TSL Website at the bottom of the petition, and that will (once Atec123 gets to it) have a link to the offline petition so I think we've done about all we can do where that is concerned.

Pj2 and I are not joking. Many people in America are not that bright. I am blond hair and green eyes and pale skin. Yet if I want to rent a car in Indiana, the rental place will look at my drivers licence, it says New Mexico USA (we are the only state that has USA on it) but some people won't rent it to me because they think I am from Mexico.

How should I Link it to the offline petition?
Just a link to tessy's word document or to the forum topic?
I would link to the forum topic -- who's letter are we using, btw? We have two, so we could each send one as a letter to Activision as a letter campaign and use the other as the offline petition.
Uhm... as far as the address goes, I would use the one for the PR department provided to us by the Activision Assist fan page on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=173789739310&topic=15415) -- I mean, we are the public and they are Activision's relations to us.
Or maybe we could just make copies of all the petitions and send a package of them to each address. (No, don't actually do that, it'll be expensive!)

Don't have a printer nor a scanner myself, but my dad has both and I visit him about every day. So, next time I pop by (him) I'll print the pdf I just made from the doc with my name in it, sign it, scan it as pdf and send it to waltz.
See if you can't print one for your dad to sign too!
I will print and scan one on friday because I don't have an working scanner in my house but I have on at my job.
Those who are playing telltale games version of monkey island, does those games makes mention of copy right anywhere reflecting all ownership from past?
Did telltale games (TM) received permission in producing?
That company should have been first ones to receive stop notice from activision.
Is strange (TG) is making money from their game while (TSL) isn't.
I'll say, put everything back on TSL website!
If activision decides to sue, based what I've mentioned above, no judges in the whole world would grant in their favor!
Any comment?
I'm fairly sure Telltale games cooperated with LucasArts to develop Tales and were under license from the start.
Hey everyone I am going to send these letters I am recieving to the following address.
Activision/Blizzard Inc.
attn: PR
3100 Ocean Park Blvd
Santa Monica, CA 90405
I have been recieving the letter from the start of this topic. People are filling in their name and signing it.
Sooo..... The way this is working is we are printing, signing, scaning, and emailing to waltz? Or are we printing, signing, and mailing to waltz?
I think we should put an extra stamp in the letter too, because that would cost a lot of money for waltz to send them all to activision.
I just don't want to update the site until I fully understand what is going on.
Any way you want. I have recieved 8 letters already via email. Don't worry about the stamps I have that covered. I will also take letters by snail mail. If you want to hand deliver it, I will take it too. I will take all letters.
Does that answer your question Atec?
Also I have a facebook account if you want to use that too.
Cool, I'll put mine in the mail tomorrow. Put an extra stamp in it for you.
XD just about to post that when Atec posted about the extra stamp. :P

Either. Or just emailing waltz with permission for her to sign your name for you (which I didn't know you could do until now)
...
Damn, I'm too slow at this posting. :P
Already sealed mine up, so you'll get a stamp from me regardless. :P
This is exciting! I have been at work all day and I come home to this--so awesome!
I'll help in any way I can, just let me know if there's anything I can do. I'll be sending my letter soon!
I have recieved many letters from devoted fans today. For just nine hours of collecting, as I am going to bed now, I have a total of 14 letters. Keep them coming guys, we can do this :D A positive outlook is all that is needed.
I'm going to look into printing out some of these letters and getting friends and family to sign them. If I manage to get quite a few and I'm able to scan and email them to you, Waltz (not sure how to do that as a PDF; would you be able to walk me through it?) - do you have some way that I'd be able to give you money towards the postage? I'd feel bad if you were paying a lot for my (hopeful) letters.
Another suggestion,
Anyone that have contact with original KQ creators (Robert and Ken Williams), why not asking them participate with petitions?
Obviously they might know all places to sent them!
I posted the template letter to Activision and Instructions on how to get it to waltz on a discussion thread on the online petition site. I hope people do it, we're nearly at 1000 signatures there.
Also, I have midterms this week and I am WAAAAAY behind, so I'll probably be off the radar until this weekend, when i can really start getting stuff done (esp. posting on the international blogs). Catch ya' later!

My dad is quite allergic to English & has never played any computer games, so leave alone he knows of 'King's Quest and especially 'The Silver Lining'.
Anyhoo, my pdf's are off to waltz.
We are up to 1113 online petitions and I have collected 21 mailed letters. (Just printed yours out Copycat 8) ). This project has touched people all over the world and that is showing in the letters people are mailing. Spread the word, activision can's stand up against the entire world.
Got my parents and sister to agree to sign so I'll either get those scanned or mail them, depending on whether or not our scanner decides to work.

Cool, should get an envelope with three more (as long as I put enough postage on it, it's pretty thick)
Hi All,
This an encourge to keep bringing those petitions out!
Read the following:

We see someone has contact with Williams!
So far, I see some hopes in here somewhere!
If you want to try and make the note to Activison more personal, feel free to add anything you want. I added a personal story about growning up with Kings Quest and how much it still makes me dream of nice things when ever I am in a tight spot.
What I would like to try and do is appeal to the hearts of the people in the company, those who can relate to us in the Public Relations department.

Nice! :) I'm glad he at least knows about it. I emailed him a couple days after the cease and desist and he hasn't responded yet, but I'm thrilled that he at least has an opinion on it.
My parents are being slow about signing it, and I forgot to bring a copy to my friend Dave last night when we went out (he doesn't have Internet :() so I will probably send those five to you tomorrow instead of today, Waltz. They're still coming!
What is the typo? I can fix it on the website.

Don't bother, there's so many sent out already, it would just make it *more* noticeable to fix it, y'know?
Hi All,
Someone else has a great suggestion in getting activision attention!
Read the following and my reply:
http://www.postudios.com/blog/forum/index.php?topic=8394.msg273069#msg273069
So do you think?
:o Whoa, that's an intense suggestion...
i don't know how we would go about impletmenting such an idea. It is a good one but I don't know, Activision is a large company and is bound to have many shareholders. I do know that I went shopping for a birthday gift for my brother and all the wii games were by activision, so hard when you are boycotting in this day and age
Well, there no questions of that!
Usually the ones who decices are shareholders!
If they don't like what they're hearning then activision will face conquences until their reconsider.
One thing for sure:
Shareholders, need to realize how violent are those games by activision instead thinking profit!
Oh! hold on here! By putting the following on gamer's magazines the ones that deal with corporation finances will be one way in getting shareholder attention example:
- game's history and how it begun with us
- How we won towards Virendy
- What Activision done and how we're trying saving game.
Of course all links should be included among!
Obviously, I understand that such implementation be is activision fail to renegiate!
Regards

In summary, I implore Activision to reconsider the decision put an end to the production of The Silver Lining and allow this project to continue.
I haven't read through the pages of this forum because I'm eager to get this printed and sent. I am not sure if anyone else has noticed this but I just wanted to point out a small error in the letter (my boyfriend saw it - he proof reads like crazy). The above quote is missing the word "to" if you read carefully. I know it won't matter for the people who have already sent it, but for anyone who hasn't it might be worth updating and also to update the main post.
I will probably read through the forum after this and find that it has been mentioned 10 times ;)
