I HATED Chronno Cross because of its multiple endings GRRRR
I enjoy multiple endings, to a certain extent. There is a fine line between enough ending possibilities to encourage replayablity and experimentation, and so many that you'd need another lifetime to find them all.
I rather enjoyed Fallout's method of multiple endings. There was really just one "main" ending, but you saw different "sub-endings" depending on the choices you made in various areas. Made what you chose to do in the game feel important. Of course, the fact that the main ending outro was brilliant didn't hurt either... (as was the game's intro, actually)

KQ6, of course, has that thing where if you make too many wrong choices you don't get a very happy marriage. ;)
and in KQ 7 you can actually finish the game with Rosella unmarried and Edgar dead (dont give him the cat's 9th life.)
Sorry, but Chrono Trigger ruled ESPECIALLY with the multiple endings... Some of it was just plain funny... (the 'slideshow' ending, for instance.) ;)
Yeah, Chrono Trigger is awesome. :D It's just that the sequel, Chrono Cross, kinda went too far with multiplicity.
CC was stupid.
Period.
Designers cannot give so much freedom to the players if they waana tell a kick ass story.
How can players know what's the best way to end it, if they don't know the story? I for once, don't have the time to finish it more than once. Not the desire either. There are many games out there.

There's a balance between being linear and being open, and most games tend to be too much of one or the other. Too much linearity, and there not much reason to play the game again, unless you simply want to relive the story. Too much openness, and it's hard to tell a cohesive story.
Right now I think that PC adventures err towards being too linear, and RPGs sometimes err towards being too open. Maybe the adventure writers and RPG writers should get together. ;)

I prefer linearity.
It's not as if you have much freedom, anyways. And doing things half-way, will leave a bitter taste.
I'm glad, for example, I finished KQ6 the long way first, because, otherwise, I would not have been able to enjoy it as much as I did. I would have known it already, after having seen the shorter ending.
There's no much point in linearity or lack of it in adventure games anyway. You replay those games for the story, not for playability. At least that's my view on it.
and, KQ9 is completely linear in the way the first time you play it, you will probably see everything there's to it. I made sure of that ;) so you enjoy the story the way it's supposed to. However, you have a lot of freedom to move as you want to :)
Anyone ever play one of Squaresoft's totally open ended games? (Saga Frontier) If you havnt, dont. :P
I like games where there's one main story arc, but a few different and (more or less) equally valid ways of getting through it. That way, if you only play the game once or twice, you still get to see all the important bits of it, but if you want you can go back and see what would happen if you turned left there instead of right, and stuff like that.
Personally, I think KQ6 has one of the best balances in linearity vs. er, open-endity. When you've played through it once, you've seen almost all the really important bits of the story... but then you can go back and there's a bunch of different things to try, all providing different nuances and such. It's more fun that way, IMHO.
And yes, obviously it's the illusion of freedom, rather than actual freedom. But that's what games are all about... illusion. I know that the creator's going to railroad me through their story... I'd just prefer they do me a favor and not make it obvious. ;)
If a game is totally linear, I'll likely still enjoy it if it had a good story... but I'll also likely wonder why the creator just didn't write it as a book or movie instead. Much "easier" to tell a more effective story with those methods.
Although I will admit that I prefer a bit more linearity in adventures, and a bit more openness in RPGs.

cesar wtf, you loved CC :P lol

Never played one, actually. Aside from a lack of funds, none of the ones I've seen so far spark my interest that much... at least, not yet. I have thought about getting into table-top gaming one of these days, though.

Now, Chrono Trigger was awesome! I think it was my favorite SNES game. I agree Chrono Cross was lacking and a disappointment.
I think King's Quest will remain in freeware land because Sierra has moved on and I am not even sure who owns it now? First it was CUC, then Cendant, then I think Havas, and now?
Chrono Cross was never released in Australia :-\, so i dont know what the hell you guys are talking about ;D
