Title: KQ8 Remake...
Post by: atec123 on May 06, 2010, 07:31:54 PM
Hey everyone...

Before you make assumptions based on the title of the thread, I will make a few points:
-No, I am not working on it right now
-Yes, I failed in promoting it because I hadn't really finished (or even really started) much of anything.  I announced it too soon
-I haven't completely given up.
-Don't expect anything about it to come up in the next 5 years

That is all you really need to know.

On to a bit of background.  I am a senior in high school, 18 years old, and was homeschooled until this year.  I was a big nerd and pretty immature for my age.  I never used the internet or anything.  I was me ssing around in AGS and was like "Hey!  I can make a KQ8 remake!!"  I started sketchin up some scenes and doing some programming.  It never got much further than that.  I fail when it comes to 2d graphics, and while I can make 3d graphics, I can't really program a 3d game.  I was not up for the task.  This was about 2 years ago I think.  Now, a lot has happened to me.  I went to school and just from that I am now a totally different person.  I forgot about the whole KQ8 remake thing.  Well a little while ago, dark-daventry PMed me about it.  I was like "Oh yeah, that..." when I was reading it.  It got me thinking, I should get this done some day.  Not now though.  My life is too complicated.  Some time, I will work on it.  Whether that means hiring a whole team to do the stuff I can't do, or f***ing learning everything it takes.  I am still determined, because I want to see a KQ8 remake, and I can't completely let everyone down like that.  I want to thank everyone for letting me see the reality of that.  I am not up for it.  Someday, and this is one of my goals that I Will take seriously, it will be complete.  For now though... lets just forget about it.

okay  :o

What was your initial plan though? Into what would you want to remake Mask? Get rid of all the fighting? change the main character into someone related to the royal family? or something else?

see that's the problem.  IT wasn't developed at all.  I still want to see a remake.  I want it to be 2d AGS style.  Like  the KQ 1-3 remakes.  I think I want the storyline to go more to roberta's original plan though.  It ended up coming out WAY different in the final product.

I thought you were going to do the statue of a hero who comes to life thing? (IIRC, that is from Roberta's original plans. I for one would be interested in seeing how you incorporate/use the idea of the redhatted goblin or whatever it was called...)

I don't think Connor's lack of connection to the Royal Family was *that* big of a problem, so I don't think that needs to be changed. Here's what I think needs to be done to fix that game...

1) Explain why there's a Dimension of Death and a Land of the Dead.
(I have some thoughts, if you're interested!)
2) Make Connor less annoying. That's most voice related, honestly. And have him speak in a more modern fashion -- have we ever heard King Graham say "thou"? No.
3) If there's battles they better be few and far between! I'm not saying NO COMBAT necessarily but make it more like the sword fight in KQ6, where it's a puzzle to be solved not a whole combat system. (Like, for instance, there's probably no way around killing the Swamp Witch.)

I don't know what Roberta's original plans were -- I'm sure they were great though. Can anyone explain them for me?

sounds like good ideas.  Remember, I am not planning on doing anything with it for a while though.  The original plans... I used to have a lot of info on that with like roberta williams interviews and stuffs.  I will see if I can find it.  As for combat, I have always thought QFG style would be cool.  I dunno about everyone turning to stone either... That made the game kinda... lonely.  I dunno.  I will start writing stuff up and hopefully get something done in the next 5 years or so.  I just can't do it right now.
EDIT: and yes, thanks for reminding me.  Connor was a statue who came to life in the original plans.  Now if only I Could find the rest of them...

here's some double-postification:
http://kingsquest.wikia.com/wiki/Mask_of_Eternity_Development

a lot of good stuffs there.  That was one of my main sources for the basic storyline at the time.  There are some things that will be different (I want it to be point'n'click like KQ5-6), but I think that is the best starting point, considering that it was roberta's plans for the game.

Maybe not, but storywise (gameplay is nothing alike, no doubt) it is what makes it different from other KQ games. Every game had one of the royal family in it and then comes C...C...C.... *chokes*

lol.  I dunno about you guys, but I found all the MoE story (the originally planned one on that site) to be very interesting.  I may tweak it, but it is a great starting point IMO.  It does feel a bit.... random, cause its just like this statue dude who magically comes to life. , Oh, I think I remember seeing something about alexander being not affected by the stone thing and helping connor.  That would be sweet.  The game was kinda lonely IMO.

Bloody Americans with low standards who don't mind playing as peasants... :P

Why yes, I am a snob. :D Why do you ask? :P

Hey now! You can have low standards anywhere in the world! ::)

Speaking of how random Connor was to the series... Let's say they were dead set on KQ8 being an action adventure game. I wonder if it would have been better for someone from the royal family to be going around killing things with weapons. I bet some people would have felt they violated the characters irreparably. Maybe it was actually fortunate Connor was so removed from the royal family. It gave us grounds to say KQ8 didn't really count. :P

It wasn't a bad game though. I actually liked it. =P
/hide off

It's called King's Quest. :P Rob and I expect to be able to play as a member of the royal family and not as a peasant who goes around looting houses. :P If we wanted to do that, we would play QfG. :P

:stop:

If we're going for definitions here... It's called King's Quest; so I expect to be playing a King or someone questing to become King. ...which rules out KQIII, KQIV, and KQVII. It kind of works for KQVI though. Kind of. I'm leaning the other way however.

Let's not go there. :-X

The piece on the MoE development was a good read, and confirmed what I thought was true regarding the Dimension of Death being separate from the Realm of the Dead in the Land of the Green Isles.

I enjoy MoE, it has a great tone and story and I enjoy it for something different now and again. Reading about abandoned ideas like the Swamp Witch disguise make me wonder about how much better it could have been, but I cherish it as King's Quest game along with the rest of the series.

A remake in any format would be interesting, not to mention rewarding for those who feel let down by the original release. It could quite easily be condensed down to the length of any other King's Quest game (Sierra OR AGD Interactive) when you consider what the bare essentials are.

while on the subject of MoE...does anybody know how you can make it work on windows Vista...do i need to download special things, or will it just not work at all?

I have not tried it so I do not know what the problem is with Vista, but, easiest/first thing you can try is run it in a compatibility mode (right click the executable -> properties -> compatibility tab -> etc)

If it doesn't work, no worries! it is only MoE  :P
