Title: Usernames
Post by: Haids1987 on July 04, 2010, 02:54:36 AM
So I'm being nosy--how did you guys come up with your usernames?  I read certain ones and I'm like, "Wow, how'd they think of that one?"

My username is actually my nickname.  My name is Hailey, and for as long as I can remember my family has called me Haids.  1987 is the year as was born.  Yawwwwn. Pretty standard and boring.

So please, enlighten me.  How'd y'all come up with yours?

For me it's a character from the KQ novel "See No Weevil", the apprentice magician Farquhar. :)

I was here, but then one day I was gone. I came back, but I'd been gone too long. I'd missed too much here and I just wasn't me anymore.

Somewhat cryptic, but it's the best explanation I've got.

A friend used the word nifty a lot--it sort of become her catchphrase--and it somehow made it's way into my username.

Because they were all out of good idea's for nicknames when it was my turn! They just inverted my name; so it became Bor, then Borrie, then B'rrr.  ::)

Huh, that's interesting. XD

Three guesses as to where my name came from. :P

I'm honestly not sure when I started using it as a username. When I was into Harry Potter, I used Hermione500 on Mugglenet IRC (I guess the number 500 appeals to me? XD) so on the KQ forums I registered on, I used Rosella500 (you know, for my favorite character in that series :P) and just from then on, I've used Rosella500 as my username pretty much everywhere (But I like to try registering it without numbers just for fun, and was somehow successful at this forum :P).

In my second semester of college I took a dance class, and my favorite was the Waltz! I was so good at it, still am, that I just turned it into Waltzdancing a user name for my email and brought it over to the forum when I registered here.

Cray Auchtin (or variations thereof) is my MMO character.

Questing Character was because characters are my favorite part of any fictional world (as you might notice if you look at my High Fantasy Wiki (http://highfantasy.wikia.com) because that's basically all I have on it so far :P) and it's a King's Quest forum so the characters were presumably questing.

Very interesting, all!  Thanks for sharing.  Does anyone but me find this interesting?  ;)

And Rob, is it partially 'cause you're Robert?  "Ro-BRRRR-t?"  ;D

My first username (not here, but the forums over at Sierra, during MoE) was 'copyman'. You see, it had just bought a CD-writer and naturally, was doing some copying work with it. After all, we've always been entitled to make one copy for back-up purposes. Not that that was always the case, but ;P
Then, the forums switched and since in the meantime I'd become a bit obsessed with cats (too) I asked for my username to be changed to 'copycat'. Asked another member who was good in graphics to alter a picture I downloaded from somewhere and thus my avatar and current username was created.
When I register at a forum, I always go for 'copycat' at first. Naturally, if that's unavailable, I take variations on it. Lately, I've been using 'phoenixcopycat' rather a lot, three guesses where I got that idea... Sometimes, I use 'copycat1973', which incorporates my birth year. On one forum (that was way before my KQ9-days too), I took a completely different turn and became 'the infamous cat'.
Don't remember at all what I was called in school. If anything, it had to with with me wearing glasses. :-\

I guess I should explain how "Cray Auchtin" came to be my MMO character name.

It's a really complicated story....
....
It's a couple of syllables I thought sounded like a fun name. I was fifteen, but I still like it to this day.

Made mine up when I was twelve or so. Was trying to think of a username for Neopets, and my mom had left a wooden spoon on the office desk (something to do with my sister's girl scouts project), so  I just added spoon to my name (which is just Tess, not short for anything) :P

Mine came from my email address. I got the Koko from "The Cat Who..." series by Lilian Jackson Braun. The _99_2001 came from needing random numbers when I initially set up my email in 2000 XD

Post by: GwydionAE on July 05, 2010, 01:50:43 AM
For once, mine is pretty obvious!  The "AE" gets tacked on when "Gwydion" is taken, no real reason for it - I'd just seen TitanAE and swiped it for a name I knew wouldn't be taken.

I chose Gwydion, however, as my first email account.  I wanted to "surprise" a friend of mine by sending her puzzles to figure out my "true identity!".  I chose "gwydion-3" as I loved KQ6/Alexander at the time - and I'd just bought her a copy - but I thought a direct reference would be too obvious.  So "Gwydion" for his other name and "3" referencing which game he first appeared in.

...of course she knew all along it was me and never bothered with the puzzles.  Never even played the game. :P  But I loved the name, so it stuck.

And it makes me feel quite appropriate to be a "Wizard's Slave", lol.

I named my laptop Ygg, which is a name of Odin, because I was really into Norse mythology at the time....

Then, I joined the forums but being called "Ygg"(which literally means "the terrible one" and had figuratively come to mean my laptop that had video card issues and turned itself off a lot and was just in general terrible (I mean boxbot-terrible, not Odin-wielding-Gungnir-terrible)) did not appeal to me. I considered using a different name of Odin (Havi, which means "bright one" for instance... or Baleyg or Bileyg or Gangleri or Gagnrad or...) but ultimately went with Delling, the Norse god of the dawn, more or less completely unrelated to Odin... and yet my avatar still ended up as an image of Odin. ::)

You mean just as your computer name or you are actually referring to your laptop as Ygg when you speak to people?

- Sure, use Ygg, he is still on.

My mother named all of our computers after surnames of our ancestors. She's really into genealogy. Right now I'm on Gilmore.

Both, but then my family is quite nerdy.

Post by: Tolin on July 09, 2010, 02:09:33 PM
My name, Tolin, comes from my early high school days where I came up with a pen
name to write under.  It's the last name of that pen name, which is Davin Albreicht Tolin.

I rarely use the whole thing any more, and I keep it mostly out of honor for the high school
teacher who helped me come up with some of it.  He died about 5 months after that...

Other than that, I've had various names but I've since stuck with Tolin or direct variations
of that for the aforementioned reasons.

furthermore I love old fairytails.

I'm always lazy when it comes to find usernames. I take them from movies, tv, games a come across. "Ravager" is named after a halberd I picked up in "Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal". I usually don't like using halberds in CRPGs, but this one was must use!

Me next!

My username "Bad Asp", comes from winning a contest Telltale had for "Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People", in which you had to come up with a tagline for a game Strong Bad played in Episode 1 called "Snake Boxer 5".  My tagline was "get ready to kick some asp"!  My username comes from both Strong Bad's name and the tagline I submitted.

Also, my name "David D." appears in the very first episode as an Easter egg.  I'm the "Assistant Tongue Forker"!  Not bad, huh?
