Entirely possible! But our tech guys are aware of that and have been trying to make sure it doesn't happen. Fingers-crossed!

The file size is - thankfully - much smaller than I expected it to be.
Under 400mb... Still big, but not prohibitively so.
400MB is still very large...
Let's suppose that about 1,000 people start downloading at 4PM tomorrow (release time). If we assume a file transfer speed of 500KB/s, then each individual download takes roughly 15 minutes.
With 1,000 people each downloading a file of size 400MB, the server must transfer 400GB in only 15 minutes.
15 minutes is 900 seconds. 400GB in 900 seconds is equivalent to about 500MB/s.
So if the download speed is locked at 500KB/s, the server must output 500MB/s.
But if the server changes download speed, then all these calculations will be wrong...
Ah by the time I get home from work hopefull everyone has already d/l the game and I wont have any problems ;)...except for the problem that I'll probably be the last one to start playing :suffer:
While I'm not familiar with all the math behind server times, etc, I do know there's a reason we asked for server space to help us mirror the downloads for the game!
I'm just anxious...I hope it goes well.

It's a time when we are all available to work out any bugs we might run into and also to make sure that that the site doesn't crash. As well as answer any of your questions.

UTC isn't a timezone! :o It is the Coordinated Universal Time, quite close to (but not exactly) GMT. everytime zone is an offset of UTC, so instead of mentioning time in a different timezones it is much easier to just state the UTC since everyone knows their offset anyways *nod*nod* At least, if you talk to an international crowd, if you only want to reach people in a certain area local time is more logical I suppose.

My offset is currently GMTY-7 but the thing that you got to take into account is that it changes with Daylight Savings Time.

We decided to do that date so that everyone in the worlds receives it during what would still be, officially, the weekend.

But worry not, we have about 20 mirrors hosting the file. We are not hosting it ourselves, we'll save our bandwidth for the actual traffic!

yours is -3:30 GMT
difference is 4hrs 30 mins.
so 1 PM in PST is 5:30 PM for you
(and yus, 9:00 PM GMT)

Hahaha darn i was hoping for a 12am PST release tonight to help curb the stress that will hit the servers in the middle of the day on Saturday when most people are off. Def was hoping to get home from the bar tonight and download but oh well I'm just happy to be finally getting to play a game i have been following for 8 years. By far the longest i have ever followed a game. What a journey and I'm not even involved with anything that it took to make this game. Once again Congrats.

A midnight PST time release is not realistic. Many on the development live on the east coast so it would very late for them. Besides, we like to see your reactions and hear your excitement build as the hours come closer.

Plus, as has been mentioned before (might have been in another thread), they want to be fully available to address bugs and issues that may come up at release, and being half-asleep as the night drags on isn't conducive to that.
Is it really that much of a problem to wait a few more hours, though? :) I'm confident that the team planned this at the best possible time.

I know Waltz i just wanted to be able to gripe one last time before release and of course wanted the game at the earliest possible moment on Saturday lol. It's fine ill just play fallout 3 goty edition on my brand spanking new gateway i7 processor 860, 8 gigs DDR3 ram, 1TB hardrive and Radeon HD 5770 1024mbs. Makes me drool everytime. Probably wont wake up until 1pm PST anyways. Cheers and here's to a smooth and successful release. And actually i dont really know what all goes into releasing a game. I thought you just uploaded it to the mirrors and sat back and cracked a beer :)
