Title: The Black Cloak
Post by: Fierce Deity on August 16, 2010, 10:54:16 AM
This occurred to me the other day when I was playing through Episode 1 for the third time. Many have come up with theories that suggested that the Dark Stranger that attacked Rosella was not actually Shadrack, but rather another subordinate from the Black Cloak Society. Whether he is or he isn't, I wondered as to why his Black Cloak would be left behind after he teleported away. Did he die, and melt like the wicked witch from the Wizard of Oz? Or he forgot to bring his cloak with him when he vanished, and went to Alhazred's wardrobe to grab another one? Maybe he left behind the cloak cause he wanted Graham to find him? This is another one of my speculation threads, but I feel it's warranted because even the littlest detail can be crucial to the whole plot.

So what do you guys think about the Black Cloak member leaving behind his black cloak? Was it on purpose, or is he a klutz?

Shadrack is always dropping his cloaks. He thinks it's fashionable. Keep it, and consider yourself honoured!

Clearly Shadrack hasn't hear about our strict family-friendly rules  :P

What, running around naked at a wedding isn't family-friendly?

Not until the traditional Green Isles Wedding Reception Streaking starts, duh. ;)

In case you didn't notice at the end of Episode 1:
The BCS guy-in-the-sky was wearing a cloak still/again.
I'm thinking The 500 Cloaks of Shadrack Cubbins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_500_Hats_of_Bartholomew_Cubbins).

Personally, I think the guy who appeared was Shadrack.  As for why he appeared for Rosella, but not for Alexander, the only think I can figure was that he maybe had something else planned regarding Rosella but had to settle for a quick curse and teleport when Saladin came at him.

As for why he dropped the cloak, I don't think it was part of a bigger plan.  It's just a way to have a starting point and the best explanation would be that it fell off as he cringed from Saladin's blade, then when he teleported, it was no longer on him, so it got left behind.  But that's probably the least fun explanation ever, so if I were to create a bigger theory, it would be as follows: Shadrack has it in for the whole family and with Graham as the head, he's saving up his big finish for him.  He wants Graham to watch as he takes down every member of his family.  He took the kids and I'm sure he's going to curse Valanice next.  He may even curse Edgar and Cassima.  Actually, if you look at the intro when you see Shadrack's hands and the bubbles with faces (as Alexander goes mental), you see Graham, Valanice, Rosella, and what would appear to be Cassima in the far left.  Below Rosella in the bottom right is a bubble with either Alex or Edgar in it, I can't quite tell.  Presumably Alex, though if his curse was different from the others, or Shadrack's monitoring those not yet cursed, it could be Edgar.

So Shadrack wants Graham to watch as he takes every member of Graham's family and extended family away from him, much like Graham's family took down the Black Cloaks one by one.  And maybe he left the cloak behind so that Graham could get himself killed on a quest trying to track Shadrack down.  Shadrack would get to watch Graham despair, then eventually kill himself on a suicidal quest against the odds.  He'd consider it to be a poetic (in)justice.  So that's my theory...you know if the cloak didn't simply slip off because Saladin attacked him.  Which it probably did.  But still, the backup theory's pretty cool too.

If that's the case, I really hope Edgar can get in a good shot or two. He spent his two appearances under Lolotte's hideous "glamour" and mind-games for most of his life (KQ4) and under Auntie Malicia's transmogrification spell and brainwashing in KQ7. It would be nice to see him get a little dangerous, even if he doesn't end up succeeding. If my reading's any indication, you do NOT tick off a Fae.
