I'm pretty new to this game and I'm not really sure if I've heard of this before. I'm just downloading it now and just want to know in advance if this is a full game? Why is it for free? Are there any special features that require purchase?

What you are currently downloading is just Episode (out of 5) of The Silver Lining. All of the content is free--basically because this is a fangame based on the King's Quest series, which we do not own the copyright for. So, getting money for it would be illegal. Which means there's no extras you don't get without paying for it, all the content is free for everyone! :)
Episode 2 is going to be released this month, although we have not yet annouced the official release date. Epiosde 1, while short, serves as a good introduction to the game and the story. If you're familiar with King's Quest, you'll probably know who's who right away, but if not, you can read the summaries (http://www.postudios.com/blog/?s=summary) of previous KQ games on our blog.

dude, you should buy the King's Quest Collection (http://store.steampowered.com/app/10100/) if you like this game. the old games are great. if you are a fan of adventure games like this, (and old school VGA/AGI/SCI graphics) you will love them.
but yes. the game is very short. I just played it for the first time and I beat it in about a half an hour. I can't wait for the next episodes though.
