Title: So how do YOU play the old KQ Games?
Post by: atec123 on September 13, 2010, 11:15:08 AM
I was just thinking... the old games, especially 5, 6, and 7 can be a pain to get working on new computers.  so how does everyone pull that off?

Me?  I have windows 3.1 installed in dosbox.  soundblaster sound drivers and some nice VGA drivers...works great.  no firecracker glitch in KQ7, and no weirdness of running the straight up dos versions of 5 and 6 (weird icons and worse speech graphics, etc).

1-4 also work in win3.1 in a ms dos prompt window.  they would work in normal dosbox I think, but to make it easier I just run them all in dosbox.
edit:  here's a pic

I don't have the collection, I have 5-7 on CD, and 1-4 on a cd that my friend burned for me...don't know where they originally came from.  then MoE works on windows XP with no problems, still trying to get it to work in linux with wine though.  might have to resort to virtualization.  or maybe the GoG version will work in wine.......

so how do YOU play these classic games?

On my Windows 98 laptop with the blue box collection (except KQ7 has to run from the 2006 collection since my original disk won't work for some reason).

Oh, and more recently I bought the GOG versions of the games and play them on my Windows 7 laptop when I can't be bothered to hulk the aforementioned 98 laptop out of my wardrobe.

nice.  I have an old windows 95 computer, but I find it much easier and more efficient to use everything in the same OS and mostly on the same system.  emulating windows 3.1 works perfectly for all the games for me.  do the GoG versions work in windows without any modifications? (and do they have all the original features in the games?)  if so, that's great.  as I said I have been considering trying the GoG version of MoE.

I didn't get rid of my Windows 98 machine for the sole reason that I didn't want the palaver of trying to get all my old games (I think the most "recent" game I have for the PC that isn't a Telltale Games download is The Sims!).  That, and sometimes it's just nice to play on an older machine.

The GoG versions don't take from the originals from what I see.  KQ1 is the original version (no remake).  KQ2 & 3 are fine (they're the bleepy bloopy music).  KQ4 is the SCI version, although you can probably find the AGI version easily enough online (I did) to emulate on SCUMM.  I've not really tried KQ5, but from what I see it's still the same.

KQ6, on the other hand, lacks the high-definition portraits and has a slightly different opening from the blue box collection (I did link it in a previous thread somewhere).  Otherwise, all the voice and everything is intact (although the opening animation is a little choppy in places - otherwise again, fine from what I've seen).  KQ7 runs Version 2.0, which very generously lets you speed up the characters(!), and also has a "bookmark" feature, which I'm assuming is for saving at that exact point.  Only downside is that there's something weird with the intro videos which make the ladies sound like they have lisps, but this doesn't affect the in-game speech.

MoE, I couldn't tell you.  I didn't play my original CD version past about five minutes or so back in the day (since the specs were so demanding for my old lappy!), and have only briefly played this one, so I can't help you there.

As for modifications?  No.  They all run through DOSBox, but they've already configured this for you.  The only thing I had to do was change the visual mode to DDraw through the folder in the start menu for all of the games since the colours were all weird before I did this.  hope that helps!

Oh, and for the record - I'm running the GoG versions on 64-bit Windows 7.

good info.  I have never played the AGI KQ4, but I like the SCI one. (that's the only one I have)
I am guessing KQ6 is different because you are running the dos version.  that is where win3.1 emulation comes in.  I am running the real windows version because of the problems you stated.  I must have an older version of 7.  the slow walking is SO annoying!  also the save feature sounds nice.

that is really cool though.  sounds like the best option for gamers that use windows and don't want to use an old computer.

The main reason people like the AGI one is because there are a lot of Easter Eggs present in it that you can't get in the SCI one (like the pirate, and the infamous KQ4 rap!).

That could be the case; I've only ever run the CD one before, so it's just a nice change, really!  The 2.0 version of KQ7 also takes out the dragon tail death, which is a bummer, but then it adds those nice tidbits so that kind of makes up for it.

Definitely the best option for newer Windows gamers who want to check the series out!

I only have KQ5 and KQ6 (as well as MoE). So I mainly use DOSBox, but I'm contemplating getting everything from GoG. It'll be a lot easier.

I have an oldest than dirt Windows 3.1 computer from the early 90s at home. My family never gets rid of things. And it still works so why trash it? I felt like a nerd because I told two of my friends about it yesterday and they had no idea what that was!

I have the Roberta Williams Anthology, it has KQ 1 through 7 as well as both Laura Bow games, Mixed Up Mother Goose (both versions), and some Apple II games. I use Windows XP and the games run fine in Dosbox. I haven't tried the Windows version of KQ6 though, I'm too lazy to download the extra stuff I need for it to run. :p

I have two Kinqs Quest Collections. The first one has  1-6 and  comes without the girl in the tower song.
The other one has 1-7 which  has the girl in the tower song as well as the same extras as the Roberta Williams Anthology. I run 1-7 in Dosbox and don't mind not being able to play the windows versions.
I used to have Kinqs Quest 5 31/2 disk version and the original Kinqs Quest 6 Cd version but lost those years ago.

I would do ANYTHING for a working 3.1 system.  That is awesome.

Well, for the first three, I use the fangames. Smoother interface, and AGD really did an awesome job remixing the plot.

Four through six get Dos-boxed. Seven, I use an Windows XP laptop.

I did not know this fact, and lack the equipment to test it out!  Personally, I'm not too fussed over the fangames.  Maybe I'll give them a proper try sometime, but I heard the voice acting for 3.  Terrible, terrible.

You guys realize all 8 games are available on gog.com and the first 7 are available on steam, right?

it's not the best. (voice acting at least.  I like the game)

you are missing out if you haven't played the KQ2 remake.  totally new game really.

I believe the games are downloadable without voice acting, right?  I'll perhaps give them a try in that manner.  Are they all made by AGDI (weren't they known as Tierra at some point in time?), or is there another developer for any of them?

KQ1VGA and KQ2VGA were made by AGDI. (Or Tierra, as they used to be known as.)

KQ3VGA was made by Infamous Adventurers.

They all have voice acting, but you can choose to have text, voices, or the elusive both option. :P
(Personally, I wish there was a way to turn on the voice acting and turn off the narrator in the first two games...I'm just used to him not being there. XD)

you can turn it off in the options.

the voice acting in 1-2, IMO is way better.  All the remakes are very well made though.  1-2 are made by AGDI/tierra, and the third one is made by IA.

I wish IA could have remade KQ4, cause it doesn't seem like Magic Mirror is doing anything with their project.

it does kinda seem that way.  maybe they just need a better/bigger team.  I would help if I had sprite/art skills because t hat seems to be where they are lacking.
